God it's so cliche but this is the dumbest fucking reality. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills trying to understand it all.
i mean yeah it will be for the unvaxxed or the people who are foolishly passing on boosters but the rest of us should have a pleasant winter
Like I understand if you're just some grifter trying to make a bunch of money, don't actually believe in anything, and are secretly vaccinated. But the politicians especially. You're killing your voters!
Found out an anti-vax Desantis nut at my work (used phrases like "witch hunt") got the shot due to our mandate that was going to take effect. Mandates work.
Shitty AMC Show blow with covid will come when insurance companies say they wont cover covid related costs for unvaccinated. Or at least will jack up premiums.
It may be situational difference do to me having unvaccinated family members and friends but pleasant isn’t exactly the word I would use. An entire nation arguing and suing over masks, vaccine mandates, at-home schooling and that bleeding over into almost every faucet of life is not pleasant in my mind.
Adherence to use of high-quality masks, pooled testing, cheap home tests, and widespread use of contact tracing apps would tamp down a lot of cases. But we don't have the will or the willingness to give up that sweet freedom.
That NPR segment I posted the other day led off with “Dr Bob,” the guy that spearheaded Operation Warp Speed, telling of how he had Hanes lined up to retool and produce masks at the start of the pandemic and was going to provide all US residents 2-3 high quality masks, at very cheep to the US government for automatic distribution. When he got up before the House for his proposal to get a vote, he was not even allowed to speak and it was scrapped because “the “masks were ugly.” So yeah, you right.
I forget who pushed it, but I think the Trump admin was going to send 5 masks to every household early last year, but that was nixed. This has been posted before itt, but it shows how big a difference universal masking would make. The times to infection are probably lower than the ones shown (I guess for the wild type) if you're dealing with something like delta. But still, high quality masks would prevent a lot of spread.
Austria seeing a lot of cases. At the height of our Christmas wave last year, the very worst counties had ~2,000 cases/100,000 over a 14 day period. Some areas are seeing that in a 7-day period. Needs Google translate from German https://www.puls24.at/news/politik/...is-weihnachten-wieder-aus-dem-lockdown/249415
Good God. Are masks required at his school? Our district’s elementary schools have required masks all year. They tightened things up recently - kids eat lunch in their classroom, recess is station-based by classroom, etc. Cases have been doubling each of the last few weeks. We’re getting close to not having enough healthy staff. Really would have been awesome to have the EUA a few months ago, but here we are. I hope your family is doing better.
If people are willing to lose their jobs (and the insurance that comes with them) over a vaccine mandate, the cost of healthcare probably isn’t going to be a very useful cudgel to convince them to get a shot.
depressing. I was only there (er Vienna) for the briefest period but I was impressed with the masking at the time AptosDuck
Salzburg seems to be doing this almost proactively so they don't have to be closed down during Christmas. Maybe the whole country might do it too, so they can be open for business in a month. We're keeping an eye on things; we'll all be boostered except for the 16yo (and he's within the 9mo window where he doesn't need a booster), so unless they shut stuff down we should be good. Just got a reservation confirmation for Christmas Eve dinner an hour ago, so they're operating on the assumption that they'll be open.
Add in ventilation and HEPA filters. I would like to believe that but places like Germany have tried all of the above and have their biggest spike yet. I don’t think any Western country have the political systems or culture to accept surveillance South Korean style and that’s the key for a living with Covid controlled strategy. And even then…they are struggling to keep control right now.
I’d be a bit more optimistic than you. Israel started issuing boosters in late July and within a month their Delta wave was tamed with cases collapsing m. And that was with just 30% boosted. The US will have more natural immunity and will have lots of kids with a vaccine which Israel didn’t at the time too. The US has lots of places still with poor vaccine coverage so I’m sure you’ll see lots of bumps in cases but you should be a bit more optimistic IMO.
11 year old just got her first shot and bae just got boosted. In 3 weeks the entire dog family will all have at least 2 shots
I don't follow it enough to know, but afaik the contact tracing apps in democratic countries are anonymous. So you could notify anyone who had been within a few feet of a covid + person with a click of a button. Sad that we won't adopt that technology.
This fucking lady has been railing against masks, vax etc for 2 years. Her daughter sneaks out and gets vaxxed and now she’s suing Walmart.
GDPR seems to preclude that. The places where contact tracing like that has “worked” are New Zealand and Australia who would put the call out to people to go get testing if you were in X or Y coffee shop at such a time. That works if you are policing small cases (like single and double digits) but if you lose control of one event or spread incident (like they did on multiple incidences) then it falls apart. South Korean style contact tracing is the bees knees. The best “western” performance in the pandemic to me goes to Denmark. Good contact tracing, lots and lots of easily available testing, the smart use of Covid passports as an incentive for vaccination early on and many other things they did well (and you’d be surprised what they didn’t do….). That said, structures of their society help- like a lot of at home aged care. And of course they are a high trust society with excellent social insurance for citizens.
This is gonna piss off a lot of pro-disease America first folks. USA was right there and let that crown slip away from our greasy, pudgy fingers.
Santa Cruz County reimposes mask mandate due to rising cases and hospitalizations. Both are still pretty low, but they want to keep it that way going into the holidays.
I didn’t think Alameda Co was going to drop it anytime soon but nice to have confirmation. Curious as to how Marin goes with it.
yeah Santa Clara won’t drop it till everyone can get vaxxed including kids under 5, so wont be anytime soon even though our rates and hospitalizations are hella low, but it’s whatever at this point
masks are a way of life right now and probably will be for a while. Seriously not a big deal anymore. I’m at a point that I wear masks that match my shoes lol. call me a sheep if you want but I can breathe
huh? I meant for me. Indoors I know I need to wear a mask. It’s honestly just part of every day life. Keys, wallet, mask.
I never travel to the OC. I am talking strictly about my personal experience. Not trying to sound like a dick but how difficult is it to understand I’m not talking about the whole country. I was just taking about me and my experience in west Los Angeles.
