I haven't been. I don't really deer hunt anymore I just take kids, which I'm doing this weekend. Haven't seen many shooters on cameras though. Our camp is 3600 acres and only 5 bucks have been killed this year (no trophies only culls/management). Usually there have been a fuck ton more don't know what is going on. Our deer committee has 4/5 monsters on a do not shoot list. P stupid bc they always get got on a neighboring club

Our leases are showing fewer does. landowenrs around us have fenced in (like the private hunt ranches) their property and planted soy beans on every section.

Here are some of the deer that are off limits. I know there are better deer but these are great for our area

They want them to get bigger/breed I suppose

It's stupid, our camp has too many rules. Almost half the members work together so they outvote everyone.

They must be waiting for one of those guys to turn into an elk. I would make a tapestry about killing one of those, and have my children’s children pass down the story of grandpa bobandi killing a monster.

We have shoot/don't shoot lists, to a degree on our property. Try to take only 4+ year olds but shit happens. We started doing this back in 2005ish. Starting to pay off with many really nice bucks being taken off the property in the last 10 years. Can't shoot monsters if you keep shooting all of the little bucks.

We do that too except for culls and has worked great. The do not kill list sucks though. It's hard enough for me to age and score a deer within a reasonable time to still setup a shot, and now I have to bring photos to make sure I don't let someone shoot certain ones

That little shouting doe stepped out before I even climbed up tonight. Stood behind a tree and put an arrow in her.

This morning I saw 18 wood ducks, a Cooper’s hawk landed in a tree at my level about 10 yards away, and I saw a little 4 point. Hunting a green field watching football in a shooting house now.

Killed my second doe of the season this past Saturday with my 4 year old son. First time he and I have gone hunting just the two of us. Probably saw 15 deer and a few young bucks. He had a blast. Doe weighed 116 lbs, which is a good sized doe for Alabama.
    Edwin doe.jpg

Going today to chase this buck. Been daylight several times in the last two weeks, and with the weather today being the coldest it's been all year, they ought to be up moving a little early.

Well, everything followed the script tonight, but I don’t have the buck… yet. He came out with two other small bucks at about 4:30. Shot him quartering away at about 70 yards. Thought I put a good shot on him. He gave a really big kick with his back legs, ran 20-30 yards with his tail tucked, then slowed dow and started walking and flicking his tail and walked behind some dog fennel headed towards the wood line. I thought I’d find him dead on the other side of that dog fennel before he even got to the wood line. But what I found was no buck and no blood at all. Looked for about 20-25 minutes for blood with no luck. So I backed out and called someone to bring a dog in the morning. I’m either going find him dead or find out my shot wasn’t lethal at all. Fingers crossed I find him in the morning.

Had to get in the compost pile and wrap the antlers on my buck head after I noticed something dug down to it. But now feel confident it's well protected.

That said, there is a new, I think bigger buck running ammok in the woods. Saw a rub today like I haven't before, wasn't on a sapling, was straight up tearing into a tree. Probably 20 yards behind my stand.. Getting out there in the AM.

Found him! I smoked him yesterday, but the bullet didn’t exit. Quartering away, I hit him behind the right shoulder and think it lodged in the offside shoulder. No blood. The dogs tracked him based on the interdigital gland scent. He was laying dead about 30 yards in the woods from where I stopped looking in the field. Dogs found him in less than 10 minutes.

.308. I’ve shot 7-8 deer with this gun and that’s the first that didn’t pass through. And yeah, it was a great shot. But with no blood and the way I thought the buck acted after I hit it, I didn’t think it was nearly that good. That’s lethal every time.

2 of my brothers shot deer with a 350 legend last year and if they didn't see them die, they probably would have had a hard time finding them Virtually no blood but the heart and lungs were liquefied on both.

As for me, I was given permission last Friday to hunt a friend's property. So I set up a ground blind over a field where there is a trail leading into it with a big scrape and plenty of other markings.

Got to take my 6yr old daughter some on Saturday. Hoping to take her tomorrow and Friday some and she won't get too bored. Definitely going most of the day Sunday solo.

She at least got to see these doe run across the field. Only stayed there for a minute. I just knew something was pushing them. I was wrong unfortunately.

Had to hide in my blind while tying it down to let this do its thing the day before.

Didn't really hunt with her over the holiday unfortunately. I got a late start Sunday and jumped some doe walking in. I didn't stay long.

Hunted Monday and Tuesday morning until 830ish. Didn't see anything. In the blind now. It's warm here today in Middle TN. Currently in the low 60s.

My son got his first buck last weekend. It’s not a monster but he was so thrilled. He’s a youngster so it seemed huge to him. He's 5. Shoots a Ruger Model 77 in .22-.250.

Just had a big one run across the back of the field. He never came in shooting range before he slipped out of view but he had a nice, tall rack.

this is my first year hunting this farm, couldn’t/didn’t do much scouting but I’m learning I picked a poor position for my shooting house. Think I’m going to hang a couple ladder stands after work.

Another thought as I try to curb my frustration: when I was younger and in college hunting west and south Alabama is if it was visible it was in shooting range, where as on wide open agriculture farms everything is in eyesight.

regardless, I need to find a long range and build up confidence in longer shots.

IIRC, you’re in West Tennessee, so it’s not close at all, but CMP marksmanship park in Talladega is awesome. They have a 600 yard range, and everything is electronic to give immediate feedback on a screen.

Also, get a tripod. For a longer shot, they’re so much better than trying to use a shooting rail.

I have a bog death grip that I use in shooting houses. It’s kind of cumbersome for anything else, but in a shooting house or blind, it’s like shooting from a vice.

Zero at 150 and you'll be on meat til 300+, I imagine, depending on load/round. I barely hunt anymore, but used to use a Rem300UM. I actually enjoyed shooting groundhogs with it more than deer. Rifle is overkill on less than Elk, but I wanted something very flat shooting. Zeroed at 225, would hit groundhogs (held top of head) at 525. Lots of fun, ostensibly helpful to the farm, but was expensive to shoot even then. Bound to be $5-7 to pull the trigger now.

I’m a big guy and far from recoil sensitive, but I got rid of my 300 RUM. It was a cool novelty; it just really wasn’t at all fun to shoot for me.

Yup. Part of me feels the same. It was my first large cal purchase, and I'll keep it for that reason. There may have been a "pissing contest" angle too, but it's beautiful (CDL), and efficient for its purpose. On the rare occasion I get in the woods these days, I carry a Mossberg 270.

If you want something that shoots fast and flat without the recoil look at the 6.5 PRC. I was looking for a 6.5 creedmoor and the guy behind the gun counter talked me into it. It really isn’t too bad on the recoil and can really reach out there.
