I listened to the new Obscura last night and it was really damn good. I have a history of shitting on the newer style of tech death and it got me thinking that maybe I've been wrong this whole time. I queued up a bunch of 2010-2020 tech death bands and discographies and have been going through them the last 24 hours. Just finished the Beyond Creation discography as I type this and at this time I'd like to apologize... TO ABSOLUTELY NOBODY!

Fuck you I was right these bands are trash. The amount of garbage tech death out there is amazing. None of these losers are focused on trying write quality music or tracks, or maybe they are and simply can't do it. But the goal in this genre is clearly trying to out wank each other. If you're recording songs you can't play live you're doing music wrong. These guys are worse than those black metal bands who had their own version of the Loudness Wars but all tried to sound worse than the next guy. If I sound bitter it's because I am.

finished the Khemmis album. it's not bad but it just... doesn't have the big riffs and harmonies that i want from them. kind of trending the way the last album. maybe this sound has run its course :idk:

I would. Starspawn was badass. The latest one was good too but I really dug their debut.

Does anyone have any good book recs for metal? I on a whim purchased Blood, Fire, Death because it sounded interesting but now I’m curious if there are any other books on extreme music I should check out. I know there’s a bunch on the mainstream bands but not sure what’s out there for the lesser know stuff.

ive only seen a few tech death acts live but haven't noticed any issues with them being able to play the songs. beyond creation being one of them. obscura also being one of them.

“Monolithic Undertow: In Search of Sonic Oblivion” by Harry Sword is a good read on drone metal/music and it’s historic, cultural, religious roots.

I’ve read Dayal Patterson’s ‘Black Metal - Evolution of the Cult’ and liked it a lot. Goes band by band and provides a biography of most of the key bands.

‘Lords of Chaos’ is entertaining, history of Mayhem.

I also have ‘Swedish Death Metal’ but never finished it. It is well regarded.

Thought Mastadon and Opeth put on a great show.

It did seem like Opeth was holding back a little bit with their set list, but they do have a new drummer. Deliverance was so sick as always. It was all GA so I got really close to the stage.

  20. Butthead

    Butthead narmas, narmas

did the other GA people try to do the pit right next to the stage? when i saw opeth, i went in very early and got very close, and i thought my spot would get me out of that mess. it did not. i ended up moving back and having some dude with giant sweaty curly hair headbanging his sweaty curly hair into my face

still had a great time :idk:

this isnt quite as impressive but its my favorite song of the ep and you can see his mouth shaping much better. i imagine he'll post one for ...and i return to nothingness soon. i'm just glad its non-standard deathcore so i dont hate myself as much while listening.

This popped up on my YouTube today. I had never heard of Polyphia before.

After about 4 hours of diving into the band/genre, it’s just not for me. I think GOAT is an interesting track, but I guess I’m not smart enough to understand their music.

I certainly appreciate the musicianship though. It’s jaw dropping in a lot of ways.

polyphia is one of my favorites because i enjoy things i dont understand. its always one of my first suggestions when trying to introduce normal people to heavier music. sure, they arent heavy, but its a good place to start.

additionally, it amazes me that the hip hop community hasnt started sampling their stuff yet. theres a ton of compatibility there.

Tim Henson is fucking unbelievable. He’s one of those guys who thinks about the guitar completely differently than people before him.

I’m not big on dubstepping metal, but his talent and composition can’t be denied.

He also pissed off a lot of shitass guitar players by making fun of “boomer bends” that pretty much everybody does. Ha.

I keep going back to new Doctor Smoke, well done for what it is. For those not aware it's basically a standard rock/metal band with some Ghost and Mastodon sprinkled in. But not the shitty parts of those bands. I guess by default that would mean there's no Ghost.

I’m probably biased because I love the book but just discovered a band that’s been described as a crust punk Agalloch called Fall of Efrafa that’s material is Watership Down themed. Passing along to you all if you weren’t aware of them and that sounds interesting

Another great industrial metal album by this prolific dude, such great heavy 90’s style industrial groove

Stumbled upon this dude and Polyphia for the first time this evening. His guitar work is fucking nuts. Their drummer is pretty incredible too. I'm already hooked on this song, as it's a perfect combo of their talent and the type of vocals I tend to like most with Cuco.
