Just caught the first episode. CGI was my biggest complaint. Was good at times but pretty bad at times too. Felt things were kinda rushed from things being normal to we gotta leave town in one episode but I get it, there’s a lot of ground to cover.

the first three were released yesterday at 7pm EST (which is midnight GMT) so I'm thinking that's the time the rest will be released as well.

I thought the 3 episodes were pretty good. I’ll definitely keep checking it out. This might be a dumb question, but is this set in the past or future? I’m assuming it doesn’t really matter, which is why it’s called wheel of time, but right after they watched the women catch the guy at the beginning of ep1 before the title card, are those ruins of old skyscrapers?

I think you answered the question with your observation, but yes time is a wheel and ages referenced in the past are actually more advanced in many ways.

Not really spoilerish, but the book background
In the books, our time is the 1st Age, the time before the breaking of the world. The Age of Legends was the 2nd age, which was highly advanced civilization that was destroyed by the events of the Dragon/Breaking of the world, and the show is in the 3rd Age. There are 7 ages, that then reset and repeat. Sort of like the universe collapsing and a new big bang restarting it. So there have been infinite cycles with variations of what happened, but the same general storyline.

Took me a while to realize Rand’s dad is Roose Bolton

and on a completely different subject, the White Cloaks, are they like marshals or something? Why do they have a hate boner for the women with powers (forget what the sisterhood is called)

Aes Sedai. And as said above, they’re zealots who don’t think the Aes Sedai are worthy of wielding the One Power. Iirc they think it’s inevitable they’ll fall under shadow because it’s too much power.

There was a time called the Age of Legends where Earth was essentially a utopia and a bunch of aes sedai members ran experiments and accidentally released the dark one on the world so there's a lot of mistrust for them for thousands of years because of that. The dark one corrupting male channelers and driving them insane was essentially an almost apocalypse event thousands of years ago. Channelers were responsible for destroying the world so a lot of commoners hate them for it. Whitecloaks think the aes sedai are secretly working for the dark one. Basically Salem witch hunt

And they don't just hate the Aes Sedai. They go after anyone they consider a "darkfriend". Which can be anyone for any minor offense.

The whitecloaks run a country called Amadicia where channeling is punishable by death amd Aes Sedai are outlawed from entering the country. They move throughout the whole world and don't have as much power in some places that they do there

They have a lord commander, but they don't serve a country/realm. They're stationed in a region and basically have more power than the king there, but don't serve any realm/kingdom.

I thought it was great. I also didn’t find the special effects and CGI distraction but I do watch a lot of sci-fi and fantasy otherwise.

    Really enjoyed it

Put off watching it until tonight to watch with the BFF. I'm 20 minutes in and ready to turn it off. I'm not sure how they managed to avoid every facet of the actual story except the characters names but they did it. Going to push through to the end of episode one since I've waited 30 years for this. It's what I feared when there were zero lines from the book in the previews.

Calm thyself. The first ep was rushed but it slows down. I think it’ll be fine and honor it. BS provides insight into every script and is heavily involved.

Not even rushed. Just not even the same story. Two rivers in the mountains? Heard a rumour that their are 4 taveren in the two rivers? To even find one taveren in the world is extremely rare. I understood GoT going off the edge when they ran out of source material. These show runners are just ignoring the source material from the get go.

Couldn't make it through episode 2. Seems like they lost around half the fandom in the first three episodes. Not sure how you get the casuals in if you alienate the core viewers right off the bat.

I loved it even as a book reader. I recognized what they tried to achieve and while I definitely like the book better, I still can like this for what it has been so far.

I just don’t think the first three episodes were particularly good television.. I feel like they didn’t really bring the intensity of the race from two rivers to the tower to the screen well even though they condensed it so considerably.. I’m still gonna watch because I think it’s well casted and well acted but at the same time I’m not really falling in love with the characters any either

"The Wheel of Time episodes can be between 53 minutes and a little over an hour. We have it on good authority that Episode 4’s runtime is approximately 1:01:36, including the end credits."

As a non book reader, it seems fine. 4th episode at least took off a bit on plot and the battle at the end was tight.

Ok, this show might be pretty good

too afraid of spoilers I got from googling way back s1 of GOT, so can someone explain the body guard people more than this episode did? If they have powers, why do they need normal dudes to look after them?

Also the different color meanings ?

I'll spoiler it in case people don't want to know right now, but not really plot relevant.
The Aes Sedai guardians are called warders. They form a bond between them that gives the warders strength and some healing, and they can feel what each other is feeling, know where each other are.

The colors of the Aes Sedai represent the different sects of the order. Red = hate men, sole purpose is to find male channelers. Yellow = healing, Blue = follows causes, Green = battle, etc.

It’s basically just so they have a bodyguard. They’re obviously still mortal, and so it’s good to have someone looking after their back.

Going into this not up on the books. I have enjoyed the first four episodes. I'm in for sure. Feel like some backstory is missing and things are unfolding pretty quick a bit like the first few seasons of Last Kingdom.

I saw those youtube videos posted a few pages back. Going to watch them over tonight. And if anyone has a pod rec I will take it as long as it's not to inside baseball as I don't want book spoilers.

Get ready for a couple of hours in Edmund’s Field and an opening that made little sense to me but exciting nonetheless. I’m gonna do a reread once S1 ends to help bridge the gap.
