Its crazy the top 3 or so, especially saban, are probably worth 50 mil a year but the rest are vastly overpaid
It’s just weird how ads can’t comprehend that the salary is not the main way you truly lock up a coach, it’s giving them an absurd buyout that no other school will pay
I just don't understand how these negotiations go. Was Tucker turning down 10/$95M if only the first 5 or 6 years were guaranteed? Or if they only gave him 7-8 years at $9.5M per instead of 10? Who the hell negotiates these deals for the schools, and how is it possible to suck this bad at it?
it almost feels like msu and psu have been questioned about their financial commitment, so they do these deals to say look at how committed we are
That isn't his point, though. If you're going to be bent over on a ludicrous contract that is also fully guaranteed, why not at least get some mutual benefit out of keeping him in place if he does well? They take on all of the downside risk and get none of the upside potential. And if the counter is that a coach wouldn't sign a $10m/year contract with a high buyout, ADs are going to have to start letting their .500 asses walk
how dare ads now making 1mil+ a year with army’s of staffs making 250k+ a year be expected to find replacements for average to good coaches
I have no idea how they go. Seems like there's at least an implicit threat from the coach's side that they're prepared to walk if MSU doesn't meet every demand. Like ned's head said, how do you get pretty much nothing in return? It's almost like MSU was terrified of having to go back into hiring mode and find another coach, which, I mean, is often a crap shoot these days. They found one that's pretty good, so they gave him whatever he demanded.
Wouldn’t say average, they just redid some of them and as for pay they were in sexual assault scandal that was going to pay out a lot.
As a fan of a team that had a coach who would wiggle his willy at any school that would look in his direction, I just can't imagine how disruptive it will be to know that your overpaid guy is going to be the subject of rumor mills every year
campbell might be good at florida assuming all of the other sec coaches can’t figure out how to keep him from stealing signals
When you consider that a Billionaire was a main player in that contract then it’s really that that big of a deal.
having that loser dan gilbert sniffing around the football program is a bigger problem than the tucker deal imo
So Campbells, fickells and cristobals if they leave and arandas deals basically start at 90mil over 10 years now right? These schools are straight fucked if they don’t work out. Almost better off hiring the hot coordinator(lannning?) at 3.5 million/ year with a reasonable buyout just because of the financial risk.
I mean, at this point you're borderline going to need an AD cabal to get these numbers under control.
there are like a hundred coaches you could get to East Lansing that would be at least as successful as Tucker for less than $7mil a year. Just...what??
everyone knows this but that's not how fanbases work. if the coach isn't currently the focal point of the fanbase's anger then they're going to be in his corner against the school/AD ten times out of ten which means if the school leaks out "negotiations have stalled because the coach asked for too much" the fans are going to just scream "fucking pay him before someone else does" and the school is screwed anyway. coaches just have insane bargaining power and leverage right now if they can resurrect a stagnant program. VT had a few rough years at the end of Beamer's time, Fuente comes in year one and wins ten games, the Coastal, and scares the shit out of Clemson, wins nine in year two and VT gives him an extension with a reasonable amount of salary but an entirely unreasonable buyout that saddles them with his abject shitty coaching for another four years. that's all it took was nineteen wins and a division title and VT had to offer an extension because you could feel the eyes turning on Fuente from other programs like they were goddamn Sauron and he had the One Ring.
Wasn’t Gilbert who funded this, was one of our billionaires (Mat Ishbia). But yes, Dan Gilbert giving something like $30mm to the program earlier this year, was such a big problem. We hated it
I think money is just a formality at this point Guy has key to do whatever the fuck he wants inside state lines
