Looking at getting a simple espresso machine. My buddy has the nespresso essenza which he really likes and seemed super easy, any other recommendations? He said he didn’t really like the vertuo ones as much but it seems they have Black Friday deals right now

This is the coffee snob thread, so I don’t think there will be any nespresso or automatic espresso machine recs in here.

My gf has the vertuo machine and it gets the job done. She’s had it for a year with no issues. Makes a cup fast. The store has a hundred varieties. The pods do seem somewhat expensive though.

houtex716 Another recommendation is to save the environment and do away with single use plastics.

Pour over (V60, Kalita wave, chemex), French press, aero press, etc. are options if you aren’t set on espresso.

Or dive in to a real espresso machine with a Gaggia Classic perhaps? It has a large modification community and seems like a good beginner machine. Of course you will also need a good grinder. Welcome to the snob thread.

Fair enough, didn’t really see any other thread worth posting that in. I guess the random questions thread would have been better

My local bagel place by the house has a $200 deal for unlimited coffee, tea, and soda for the year. I usually do it every year lately, but going to make my own coffee at the house next year so I can incorporate more organic and healthier coffee beans.

Looks like I am making my first steps towards being a fellow coffee snob. Can’t wait to learn some tips on here.

Anyone have a recommendation for a coffee maker for my wife? She isn’t a snob at all just needs something that makes a solid cup but also can make a pot. Something that is pretty easy to clean too.

My wife will drink a pot of coffee a day most days. She isn't a snob either (although she knows the difference between good coffee and shit coffee), she's just a caffeine junkie.

Besides the TV this is the most used machine in my house. Might seem like overkill to most but it can make a pot of really good quality NJ diner counter coffee in 3 minutes. I've had it for many years now. One of my greatest gift ideas ever.

Does anybody know where I could find filters for this thing made out of the Chemex style unbleached paper. That paper definitely holds more of the oils for a super smooth cup. I usually buy Bunn filters from Amazon in 1000 packs that last me about 2 or 2.5 years.

We use the Chemex when we're feeling frisky at night.

My wife drinks the Duncan Donut blend from CostCo. Look @ us balling out of control.

She's liked cheap coffee since med school. Doesn't bug me bc it would be something else she spends a lot of money on if had fancy tastes.

Before the recession and certainly before Covid many NJ diners were 24/7 with dessert and coffee a must anytime day or night. Considering in many cities and towns there can be 4/5 diners per square mile, if your coffee and dessert sucked you risked losing a huge revenue stream as customers could just travel a half mile in any direction and find better.

Comparing a normal cup of coffee to NJ diner coffee is a compliment. It's not gourmet by any means but it's as reliable and solid as you could hope for.

Haven't been to a Waffle House since I was little and not a coffee drinker. Is Waffle House coffee good? Because NJ diner coffee is usually and normally good. Each one is unique though because each sources their supplies differently.

Everything at Waffle House is fantastic.

In all seriousness, it’s not good, not great, but it is consistently decent and on every block in the south. You now have me wanting to check out some NJ diners.

Better get over here before what diners are left become only a rich man's game. Post pandemic prices have soared (as they have on everything everywhere) and very few still keep late, late hours. Used to be diner parking lots were near full at 2:30am on a Friday/Saturday night when the clubs let out. Now the drive thru lines at McDonalds are out to the street and the diner is dark. Sad really.

chasing shot time/grind size a bit, scale doesn’t really fit under the robot so output tough to track. Fun though

And the Bunn coffee maker posts also. Let’s bury those on p51 as well.

Yeah I filled the cup with 36g of water (18g coffee) to ballpark the cup volume I want.

ordered a small scale for $13 bucks. Shots still pulling a little long (35 seconds).

While the 2:1 ratio is a good start, lighter roasts may benefit from 2.5:1 or even 3:1 ratio.

One thing that does help is a consistent tamp - it'll come with practice but helps to take out a variable from the equation.

Yeah my tamp needs work, more level. have noticed some grounds sticking to the tamp, not sure what that’s about.

will have to try a lungo with the lighter roasts

When I started I got an espro tamper that clicked when the “right” amount of pressure was forced. Helped with consistency.

Wife tired of making pour over / Aeropress before heading to the hospital for work early in the morning.

Considering Ratio 6 or Moccamaster KBT w/thermal carafe

    Anyone have experience with either?

We had a Moccamaster at my office and it was built like a tank as well & there's a reason they last for years, while brewing a very good cup of coffee - i'd just mention that the stainless steel carafe does offer convenience but I felt their carafe imparted a bit of a metallic taste to the coffee & retained smells - i brought in cafiza tablets and would clean the carafe every few weeks. Apparently this shower-head helps a lot with saturation of grounds but $$$ https://www.artisansmith.com.au/products/shower-head-for-moccamaster

I've used the Ratio 6 a couple of times as my brother-in-law owns one - it brews a solid cup of coffee & built pretty well. It has a 5 year warranty as well & if you can score a refurb, it's a very good deal (my BIL got a refurb for 245 I think).

Overall, they make a very good cup of coffee and you couldn't go wrong with either - it may boil down to aesthetics. Moccamaster does look dated & more of a diner artifact. I've heard good things about the Oxo 8 cup brewer.

I got my parents one a few years back & it’s solid.
    Appreciate it

Definitely like the look of the Ratio 6 more, but like the ability to adjust the Moccamaster, for smaller brews… decisions, decisions

Anyone subscribing to Fellow Drops, the beans today are from my local Jax Roaster. Have had the beans & they are great!

Start your 2022 off with a pleasant surprise: an incredible fluffy cantaloupe-noted coffee from a son-and-pop roaster in Jacksonville—Bold Bean’s Kenya Kagumoini AA!

This coffee was grown in rich, red volcanic soils along the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley, and washed at the renowned Kagumoini Coffee Factory. The cool temperatures allow the cherries to mature slowly and develop the complex fruitiness that people search for in Kenyan coffees.

Fellow Taster Hailie says: “Pleasantly surprised by this Kenya! The cantaloupe note was right on the money, round melon sweet, slight pear, fluffy mouthfeel. A hitter!” We also detected notes of caramel pluot and honeycomb, and Bold Bean are letting us drop it exclusively with you first!

    Origin: Mathioya, Nyeri, Kenya
    Process: Washed
    Varietal: SL28, SL34
    ⛰ Elevation: 1,750 MASL

They’re absolutely preposterous. Tasting note i had on beans last year was “mango white claw.” I swear some of the notes are references to things that have never existed. Chocolate dipped cotton candy and bat guano infused strawberry.
