Few questions for the watch experts in here. I haven’t worn a watch outside of my Apple Watch that didn’t survive my bachelor party, rip, but I’ve always wanted to get a nice watch to wear. I’d always thought I wanted a Rolex submariner but after doing some more research I’m leaning more towards a datejust as I feel like that is a little dressier and classic. I went to a store the other day to try one on and see how the sizes looked on my wrist. I pretty much confirmed I would need a 41 over a 36. The lady there also brought up the sea dweller/deep sea since it comes in the larger 43/44 sizes. I hadn’t really contemplated that model before. What are peoples thoughts on these since I know a lot of y’all have some of these watches already? Also what kind of wait times am I looking at? I’m not trying to buy one asap but if the wait is going to be something ridiculous it may be smart to get started there. I may be able to call in a favor with a local AD via a close friend if I have no chance of grabbing one as just a random dude coming into the store.
Wait time on a date just shouldn’t be THAT bad (maybe 3-9 months depending on the AD and style), but might as well use the friend if you can. Those are nice watches. Can’t really go wrong if you do the research and buy something you like. I have a Sub. Obviously a very popular watch and for good reason. I can wear it with anything, it’s well made, and will last forever. Not a huge fan of sea dwellers or deep seas, but again, buy what you like.
Went by my local AD and they had a Sea Dweller 43 in the case. I tried it on and was surprised it wasn’t overly big or bulky. Plus it comes with the glidelock clasp. Better than a Sub? No, but not worse. Is a Datejust the way to go? Maybe but it depends on what you do for a living, how you live outside of work, and which configuration you would choose. If you’re open to it, a sports/dress combo of those two is a good collection.
So my dad recently passed away and I inherited his Rolex. I am very very green in watch game but remember my dad buying this watch in 1989 and swapped the Oyster band for this band that’s on there now. I went today to the Rolex store and Purchased 2 links ($410 each) but the sales person mentioned she hadn’t seen a Oyster Pearl GMT Master (not the GMT II which I guess is still available and the only one I could find online) in person before. She said I should get “Full Serviced” which takes 16 weeks or so? And then get it insured. Anyone know anything about this watch? Should I get “Full Serviced”? It’s $1500 and I will be without this watch for a long time, and what is a good watch insurance company? I guess I have to get appraised as well Thank you in advance
mc415 I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. It may not give you any peace, but the gift you’ve received to remember him is a big part of what a lot of us ITT love about this hobby. Whatever your future with this watch is, I hope you always think of the man that wore it and how proud he was of you in knowing you’d be carrying on his legacy.
Sorry to hear about your dad. Any insurance company should be able to add a side policy for jewelry. You’ll have to get it appraised though. If it works fine, then it’s really your call on whether you get it serviced. Best practice is probably something like every 10 years (my guess), so if it’s never been serviced, it’s not the worst idea.
thank you very much! Yeah it’s going to be passed down to my son someday as well and I know it’s something my dad always wanted to pass down to me which is why I want to make sure I’m taking care of it correctly and doing everything necessary ( almost like owning a luxury car it feels like) to make sure it’s being kept well for the long term
Thank you for the info, yes I’m guessing it’s never been serviced before so probably a good idea and get it insured ASAP/appraised, she emailed a bit ago letting me know to bring it after the holidays and turnaround from Rolex would be about 8 weeks instead of 16
I’m going to go the other way on this. DO NOT SEND THIS TO ROLEX FOR SERVICE Find a vintage watch expert (Eric Wind cones to mind). Call him up and ask for his recommendation of who to service it. Rolex will replace parts, polish it, and attempt to make it as new as possible. You don’t want that, especially since they won’t return old parts which are replaced. But do get it insured. 100000% get it insured.
I have several times, years ago. Never had any issues and it was cheaper than anywhere else I looked.
This is tempting, the $20 off promotion just sweetens the pot. Should I? https://www.jomashop.com/patek-phil...tomatic-blue-dial-mens-watch-5711-1a-018.html
That watch is ugly as fuck, so unrefined. I can't wait to see it splashed across Dubia princelings Insta feeds
That's one of those wife "But it was on discount!!" purchases. Separate but related note - this Patek thing is like a damn cult, she's getting phone calls and invited to meetings and shit.
Interesting watch brand breakdown, from Reddit. Definitely several that could easily be bumped up or down a level Spoiler
Friend of mine just bought an A. Lange and Sohne that looks pretty dope - will try to find the model.

Anyone familiar with Chopard watches? Are they anything special or just another high end brand with watches?
LUC Chopard are very high quality watches with good movements. Most of the good stuff is more in the dress watch arena. I actually quite like the alpine eagle although it’s a shame they have the date at 4:30 which is a deal breaker for me.
Wife is going to get me a watch for Christmas (or soon thereafter) and I need your help… For some reason I dig the moonphase and was eyeing the longines here: But it’s kinda simple. I looked for one with an extra complication or two and found this one: which i also really like the style of but is a bit too busy I like the looks of both but was hoping someone could recommend one in the middle. Could be any brand but I’d like to sty under $3k.
Brown & Co in Buckhead has had one or two on display. They seem to get a lot of them. edit - also the store up at the Avalon in Alpharetta edit2 - obviously Harrod’s model isn’t available over here
I have the first one. Like it a lot, definitely thought the second was too busy. I probably would have gone with this if I had seen it before.
BB58 are everywhere. I might’ve missed a post that you are responding to, but the Tudor above, being discussed, is the green Harrod’s version.
