do you think anyone itt is advocating for kids/teachers/administration to be armed in schools? When we say something must be done do you think we are advocating for more guns in school? Do you think people itt want a society filled with assholes conceal carrying or carrying everywhere. I mean JFC. There is nothing inconsistent with thinking that assholes walking around like it’s the Wild West is fucking stupid and wanting to do something about school shootings. I mean seriously what the actual fuck made you think you were making a good point.

Idkwtf you’re even talking about, Daniel. And clearly you don’t understand my point.

The argument that mass shootings/school shootings warrant a response by virtue of their statistical significance irt to gun crime while admonishing someone who chooses to legally conceal carry bc the likelihood they’ll ever need it to defend themselves/others is statistically insignificant, is inconsistent imo. Particularly when supported by simpleton logic like, “well you haven’t ever had to use a gun in self defense so therefore you clearly don’t need one”. That’s dumb. Better to have and not need, than need and not have. I’ve never been attacked by a bear while hiking, still carry bear spray. My kid knows how to swim, has yet to drown, still wears a life jacket on the boat and watched like a hawk in/near water. I’ve yet to be burglarized, still set my alarm every night. It’s as disingenuous as claiming my conceal carrying is proof it works as a crime deterrent/safety measure bc I’ve yet to be killed, harmed, or the victim of a crime. Like many things in this world, you don’t need it until you do. Hope that day never comes, but would rather have one than not if the need arose.

There’s no gun worship over here, I think tacti-cool gun culture is eye rollingly stupid. I’m fairly large, strong, in good physical condition, self aware and level headed enough to attempt to avoid or extract myself from dangerous situations, but I can still conceive situations where having one makes sense/is necessary/unavoidable regardless of my ability/willingness to fight or precautions taken to avoid conflict.

To be clear, I find this particular line of logic lacking, not the gun control argument in general. I’m not arguing the proliferation of gun culture or the ease of access to guns is not a problem. They are. But so long as this is our reality, I’d rather have one than not.

There was a dude open carrying on the fastener aisle at Home Depot the other day. I just do not understand what goes through people's mind that before you go to Home Depot you better get your gun.

I’m in a whiskey club with about 20 people and one of the guys had his gun on his holster for our last meeting. He looks about how you would expect, dumpy, disheveled with a neck beard but I kept thinking how lucky we were to have someone here to take care of us if something popped off at a closed bar with 15-20 men and women in their 30s-50s drinking and learning about Angels Envy.

    Never felt more safe

I was robbed at gunpoint once. You know what I didn't need? A gun to protect my wallet. While I'm sure it would have been fun to draw down and have a shootout, nobody got killed and the total cost to me was less the cost of a gun.

Every single day. Doesn’t mean I’m wrong on this one. Gun laws were written by people who owned black people and considered us 3/5th of a person. Most laws in this country were written for white people, except for the ones that stopped us from being slaves, gave us the right to vote and gave us equal rights. That last one was written in your parents lifetime.

Gun laws and guns in general are a white mans game. A black man open carrying is far more likely to be seen as a criminal and more likely to get into an escalated situation with the cops. This is the only country in the world with this stupid ass gun fetish and it’s not accident more deaths happen here per capita because of it.

This made the rounds here but it’s exactly my point.

my buddy’s dad (retired sheriff deputy) was charged with organizing a “security team” at his southern baptist church. basically the deacons, all old and fat, strap weapons to their legs and sit strategically in the pews in the event someone wants to shoot up a congregation of racist white people.

I don’t know if we have a gun thread, but I get the idea of guns for sport. Definitely not my thing but if hunting is your thing and you use all parts of what you kill, good on you. I also get guns for use at home for protection. I draw the line at assault rifles. What kind of shit are you into that you need an AR-15 to protect your family? And as far as open carry, how shitty of a human do you have to be to think that you’re going to get into some shot that requires you to be Doc Holliday?

We’re not in disagreement about anything you just posted or the reality that blacks + guns are treated/perceived differently than whites + guns. But that’s not really directly related to my statement that “unfortunately there are some problems that can only be solved by having a gun”.

For one, I specified conceal carry. Open carry is non sensical from a self defense perspective.

And while I appreciate all the anecdotal evidence from user experiences with crime, I’ll pass on using it as a risk barometer.

i've never understood the desire to want to put yourself in that situation. i'm a really good shot with a rifle and pistol at the range, but 100% chance that shit doesn't translate to a real world situation. hell, if paintball is anything like a real world encounter i'm hitting maybe 1 out of a 100 shots

I don’t really care a great deal about guns one way or the other, aside from generally agreeing that it’s simply too easy for shitty people to get their hands on them.

That said, unless you’re in law enforcement or are carrying tons of cash around and need a specific deterrent for that, I don’t see any compelling reason why a regular citizen needs to carry a weapon around. The chances of it being actually useful in an already unlikely situation are infinitesimally small and certainly smaller than the risk of misuse of it because of an overreaction. If you’re concerned about a possible mugging or old timey stick-up, the perp is going to come at you with a gun drawn already so you’re exponentially more likely to die going for your own gun than just handing over your shit.

All that said, I know a bunch of otherwise normal people who conceal carry. I think it’s dumb, but at least none of them are psychos.

Yeah, I’m not dbl’ing up this thread debating hypotheticals. I’ll just stand by my statement that I can conceive the need for one, not influenced or created by some perverse desire to be a hero or kill someone.

As someone mentioned, 50k years of human aggression, predatory pathologies, etc. I’m certain the scenario exists without getting into details of what neighborhoods I frequent.

People who carry in public don’t go to “the hood.” They live and stay amongst people who look and behave like they do. The only threat to a guy with a goatee and a gun is another guy with a goatee and a gun.

I frequent the hood. I own properties in Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth. Ask people familiar with those areas if driving through there at 2am to shut off the water bc there’s a leak or to tarp off the roof bc a tree fell on it during a storm is something they’d feel safe doing.

Loose gun/Open Carry Gun laws etc.... exist to allow whites to legally murder POC.

Those laws have never existed for minorities to carry guns. Just ask Philando Castile.... O that's right, you can't because he's dead for legally carrying a firearm
