Unfortunately, Tobias won’t be joining us for lunch. He was admitted to Mission with head trauma following our fight. They also found unrelated rectal bleeding and he tested positive for covid (I guess he’s been lying on here about being vaccinated).
I felt bad for putting Tobias in the hospital so I got him a nice scarf from Talbots Petite and a boys blazer from Chicos.
Going to Asheville in January for a bachelor party and I'm looking for some recommendations for food, drink, and activities. We'll be staying downtown at the AC Hotel and I think there is going to be around 10-12 guys, in their early to mid 30's, so we'll need places that can accommodate larger parties. One of the guys going works for Anheuser Busch and has already set up a private tour and dinner at Wicked Weed one night, but any other advice would be helpful. Don't think we're trying to do anything too fancy, like the Biltmore Estate, so burger/BBQ/taco/pizza joints and places with good cocktail and beer selections will probably be our main destinations, live music and heated patios would be a plus.
Buxton Hall is a must for lunch. You also have to go the the Asheville Yacht Club for late night fun. Sierra Nevada is awesome for bachelor parties, but a bit out of town so it would probably take up half a day but it’s worth it if y’all are beer guys. We’ve recently had great dinners at Rhubarb, Chestnut, and Limones, and I’ve heard great things about Jettie Rae’s. It’s really hard to go wrong with food or drink anywhere in town. Some other favorites of ours include Bhramari (great beer and cocktails plus plenty of outdoor space), Dissolvr (fantastic IPAs and fruited sours), One World (only basement brewery in town), and Burial for beer.
The Korean garlic kimchi wings at Yacht Club are so good. I think you mentioned Fat Catz to me before, I definitely need to check it out.
way out of the way and the only reason i know about it is that i lived at avalon on sweeten creek which is a 5 min walk away. they usually have pretty good specials on pool and drinks. wife and i had our daughter in hendersonville in august. she insisted we go to cats the night before her scheduled c-section because it was the place we always would go for a drink or a game while we were dating so she is a fan too. as they place the wings down in front of me mid pool game, she starts having contractions and we have to box them up and leave to have the stupid baby.
it gets cold but the biggest surprise to me living there was how (relatively) little snow you get compared to what you’d expect from the mountains
Yeah I've never seen snow there. But I have memories of Jan/Feb visits being absolutely frigid. And sometimes it's even kinda cold up there in the summer, esp if you go up on the Parkway or something
it was 12 degrees for like a full week in 2018 i think. that stunk i don’t mind cold as long as snow accompanies it
Johnny Utah are y'all golfing or hiking or doing any kind of sporting activity? Gotta have something for a bachelor party IMO. The strip joint in Asheville is pretty tragic I believe
This was the week I got married. I think the high on our wedding day was 12 and the windchill at night was in the negatives We got some badass pictures in the snow after the wedding though.
January is our favorite time to visit and when we got married. We love bundling up and just walking around.
Has anyone seen a concert at the Salvage Station? I bought tickets for a show in April. It looks small, but also seems to have great scenery from their website.
I saw Big Boi and dungeon family there. All their big shows they do out by the river. Really cool if the weather is good
Biscuit Head is the best breakfast I've ever had. Biscuits are great. So soft yet so dense. Their chicken gravy is hands down the best gravy I've ever had. I can eat it like morning soup. Their Sriracha maple sausage is incredible too. We ate their all 4 days we were there. I was worried it wouldn't be as good as we remembered from last year but I was wrong. It's just great. Tried to go to Rocky's but the first location was closed due to covid staff issues. Went to the other location and they said it's me 75 minutes for takeout. Entire parking lot was full of cars with people waiting on to go. We passed and stopped at Juicy Lucy on the way back. Can't lie, they make pretty damn good burgers.
Weather being so warm compared to the same week last year made it a completely different trip. G was dead set on building Olaf like we did last year so found a tubing place just north of asheville and we were able to build a snowman there so she was happy. Drove up to Sugar Mountain to go ice skating. We did Beech last year but their skating was closed. Learned I'm not an ice skater but we had fun anyways. Another day we drove the BRP up to Mt. Mitchell. That was a pretty awesome drive. Made the mistake of not leaving until after sunset. It gets dark super quick up there and then we had to drove through the clouds on the way down. Couldn't go more than 5-10mph for a good bit on the way down. Wife was scared to death but I kinda enjoyed the drive.
Order ahead online. Usually ready in 10-15 minutes. If not it'll take you an hour to go through the line. Just order online and eat in your car.
What do do you guys recommend for dinners? I've heard about Buxton and White Duck for lunch, also Brahmari supposedly has awesome food.
Rhubarb, Chestnut, Limones, Curate, The Admiral, Jettie Rae’s are all great. And Bhramari’s food is incredible. Easily the best I’ve ever had at a brewery.
We did White Duck for a lunch and I was not impressed at all. Only good part was the frozen Cheerwine.
if people have any access to decent fusiony weird mexican its an automatic skip its fine, but most cities have that type of taco place
I almost added that we have a place, Taco Lu, that's much much better. White Duck was just needlessly fufu when not needed. Like who wants a cucumber aoli on top of a sesame glaze on shrimp? It's just too much for me. And their tortillas weren't good at all. With all of the good food up there, I was surprised that one was rated highly.
Downtown, Biltmore Ave. We were doing some shopping and stumbled on it and had seen it in some lists of restaurants so we tried it. Maybe it was an off day, maybe we're the weird ones, we just didn't like it at all.
