It sucked last yearbut everything kind of did. I actually had to quit shooting it during hunting season last year so I had a some rounds to hunt with. Marks is stocked back up now. This was the other day.
Deer activity has really slowed down the last 1-2 weeks for us. We went from seeing deer pretty much every sit to getting skunked the past 8 days. They're killing the corn and becoming more nocturnal.
Do you have automatic feeders? That’s a big problem with gravity feeders during the season — they don’t have to eat during the day. We set ours to throw corn at 7:00 and noon.
It's weird but I haven't seen a doe out on our property since muzzleloader season. My dad shot a 4pter a couple weeks ago and we STILL are seeing fresh signs of the big buck in our woods. Most buck activity I've seen in my few years. Very odd, to me.
There was a massive roadkill 8-10pt buck not too far away from our place this weekend. Far enough that I don't think it's the one that's been tearing up our woods. But still a bummer.
Also, when they’re less active in the day, the conventional wisdom is to leave green fields alone and hunt the ingress/egress to bedding areas. We have some years where they still have acorns well into December, so they just stay in the woods.
Of course I come back home this morning after school drop-off and see deer. Guess I try this afternoon now that this front has moved through. Hopefully they hunkered down all night and move today, like below.
I'm hoping I get permission to hunt here next year. It's a good friend's property. It's mountainous. I'd like to have more time to scout that out and use my climber. I made it in my blind. Windy as hell today.
good luck It’s windy as hell over here too. My wife has a headache so my plans got axed anyways, my evening will be spent wrangling kids
Another still and quiet morning. Probably my last hunt here. I need to be up in the thick stuff I'm too close to this house for any mature buck. But only my second year hunting deer again since I left high school. Again, this was as last minute as it got, so I went the easy way. It didn't pay off.
Had some activity tonight… saw the 4 point again, him and a spike hung around for a while. The 4 is already outside the ears and pretty tall, he should be really nice in a couple years. Both bucks walked in probably 40 yards to my left and then hung out within 100 yards before going off in the woods. There were probably 8-10 doe down in a low spot of the field but I was too busy watching the bucks. I still have four weeks left up here, probably time to go ahead and put one of those doe in the freezer already.
Ughhh. Shot a doe at a bout 150 yards. Ran through the tree line on to a neighboring farm and I lost sight of her. I waited about 10 mins and went to the tree line, found good blood. Called a buddy who farms our family farm that I was on and he called the neighboring land owner to give him a heads up I was going to be over there. I found a two more areas of blood spatter and then nothing. This field was huge and it dark so there is nothing telling how far she ran. Hopefully I can get through my morning conference calls and run back out there. It will be down to 42 tonight so hopefully I can salvage the meat.
This is that 4 or 6. I’ve seen him pretty consistently, I could have hit him with a football with how close he was hanging out
Finally got some bucks working scrapes and rubs now. Probably will see some good rut activity around the second week of January.
Sow and three cubs on different part of lease was pounding corn during the day. Covered up in them. There is no bear season in our zone. Actually caught a cub in a hog trap behind our bunk house, mom was not happy
Took some videos and pics over Christmas break when I was hunting at my wife’s family land. Saw a 4 point, a few does, and some turkeys. Didn’t shoot the 4 point because it was small and I generally won’t shoot a buck unless it is an 8 point. Didn’t ever have a good shot at a doe. Saw an 8 point on the way back to the house in the Kubota standing in the middle of the trail, bounced off when he saw me. There was an 8 point in the field I was hunting at 7:30AM on the 26th. I was sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee at that time. I was too lazy to get up early and hunt at daybreak. Most of the time I was hunting in the middle of the day. I’m just not that mad at them.
Still trying to bag one. Saw the same small buck a few times last week and last night, nothing else beside him. I’ve got every evening to hunt, Friday is the last day of our season. Hoping for a doe at least.
That cold front that just ripped through the south /east coast should have things ripe for deer hunting.
We had a buck show up yesterday that hadn’t been around all season. We had him a bunch last year and thought he was 3.5 and would be a good buck this year. He’s solid but didn’t make much of a jump from last year. Heavy horned but no G3s. So not sure what to make of him. And we’re getting more and more activity from the big 8 we’ve been chasing all year. Hoping to catch up with him soon.
Went out today in 28* with a couple inches of snow of the ground and didn’t see shit. This is the first time I’ve been back-to-back seasons without taking one.
Was driving from NE Alabama to Nashville to see a customer today and had to turn around. It was snowing like crazy on I 24
Yeah, I was surprised the roads got as icy as they did. Last weekend I was taking Christmas lights off the house in shorts and a T-shirt, I figured the ground temp would still be too warm but here we are.
A big front passed through yesterday, and our deer are full rut, so I took off to hunt today through the weekend. This morning, a wheel fell off of the Polaris in the middle of nowhere on the property. I got my walking in. Great start to the weekend.
House-sitting again this weekend for my buddy where I deer hunted. Just enjoying the view when turkeys started flying into the yard from roost. Then a doe walks up. 80 yards maybe from the back porch. Can't wait until he goes to his Florida home this spring.
Just pulled em out of the compost pile. Rinsed and gently scrubbed with old toothbrush. Sitting out drying now but probably need to clean them up at least one more time.
Meh, not really. Surprisingly there was still quite a bit of eyeball tissue in the larger one even though it was in the ground longer. Both had some tongue tissue around the jaws that was like a paste. Once all that got rinsed off, virtually no smell. But it didn't smell any worse than gutting and skinning the deer when we shot them.
Put both my dad and my's names in a 2 day hunting trip raffle this weekend. My dad got the call yesterday saying his name was pulled. He asked if we could each go 1 day, and I'm assuming because it's the place we actually use for processing running the hunt, they agreed. Have to plan it for 2023 hunting season though because they're already filled this coming fall
