Anyone else here a Mellow Corn fan? Hell, for the price it's unbeatable. Bottled in Bond never fails.
FWIW I like both products and wouldn't find it odd if someone said they didn't see a $30 difference between the 2. Big fan of the RB rye though.
Mellow Corn has become a meme amongst hipsters and taters. It is what it is. It’s on par with Evan Williams white label, nothing special. It’s pretty bland and corn-forward (shocker, I know), tastes young.
As much as the NC selection sucks ass, at least you can count on the prices being cheap and standardized I am in SC and it's like the wild west. I just saw a four roses small batch select for $275
Maybe some day my palate will be able to tell the difference, but for now $100+ bourbon is wasted on me I got some Elijah Craig barrel proof, McKenna 10 yr and old Forester 1910 which have been impossible/difficult to find in NC
The prices for some of those is more just having a bottle than drinking it regularly. The allure of buying expensive and hard to find bottles for me is being able to share it with people who appreciate it or to have a nip for a special occasion.
Here's the deal. I like it. I'm normally an Islay Scotch drinker and don't venture into bourbon or other whiskeys much. Meme? I have no idea regarding "hipster memes," but I do know good whiskey and I know that, for the price point, Mellow Corn is pretty good. I'm not saying that its single-malt Caol Ila 12, but it's not bad and the price is super agreeable. I'm not going to dislike something because it's the "hipster thing" to like it. Absolutely silly to dislike and discredit something simply because it's popular among a certain crowd. That said, if they are still espousing the qualities of PBR then they still haven't picked a decent beer.
I’m glad you like it. Let us know if you ever want suggestions on broadening out your whiskey, rye, and bourbon selections.
And I’ll ping you if I ever want to branch into scotch, CharlieKellyReturns. So far I’ve stuck to balvenie 14y caribbean cask because it carries similar sweeter notes that I’m accustomed to in bourbon.
My man . I just bought a Lagavulin Cask strength, and an Octomore 12.2 to break open on Christmas. If you're looking for a good bourbon for around the same price as Mellow Corn, I would suggest Early Times Bottled in Bond. You can get a liter for like $25.
BrickTamland if you ever want good scotch recommendations for a bourbon drinker, feel free to ping me too. I love bourbon, but I'm actually more of a scotch drinker.
Generally, just stick with Laphroaig 10 as my normal but looking for some info on the Ardbeg and Lagavulin brands. Ardbeg Scorch has my attention.
I would be interested in a good bourbon with minimal sweetness, if that exists. That's the part that I just don't care for.
If you aren't into the sweetness as much, I might pass on Lagavulin for now, especially if your palate is used to smoke already. I always get some honeydew melon flavors upfront with Lagavulin that might put you off. Try the Ardbeg 10, or Ardbeg Corryvreckan if you want to splurge a bit. Also the Port Charlotte 10 would be good for you I think.
