I've got two personal contenders I got an ear infection with symptoms that started suddenly and progressed so rapidly that in less than two hours I went from feeling perfectly fine to crying my eyes out in pain because my ear drum was on the verge of bursting. I had a bad case of the flu, bad dehydration, and a severe case of GERD coalesce one night to the point where I literally thought I might be dying. I got my parents to take me to the ER in the middle of the night and the chest pain from the GERD attack lingered for a few weeks.
Broke my leg in the middle of nowhere jumping out of my boat and onto a riverbank. Had to drive the boat back to the boat launch. “Walk” to my car and back the trailer into the water. Load the boat on the trailer and drive back to town. No place to park a boat so I had to park a 1/4 mile away from the clinic and “walk” the rest of the way.
Had pneumonia so bad I couldn't walk. The doctors kept missing it and I thought I had a back injury. I borrowed a cane from someone for the couple days before the doctors figured it out. Really shitty couple days.
When they set my wrist after my car accident. They had a bunch of people in the trauma center hold me down while they did it. A level of pain I couldn't fathom. Spoiler
bone marrow biopsy. they numbed the area a little bit (lower back / tailbone). But still, so fucking uncomfortable. Felt like someone was grinding a dull rod into my tailbone.
Same. Running on beach, took a broken bottle in the bottom/arch of my foot, nice and deep. Shot at hospital hurt as much as the original injury.
My best friend spun one of his 360 degrees inside his sack as a teenager. Swelled up to the size of an orange. All of my personal experiences are pretty mild. I’ve only ever even had stitches once.
Broken leg + dislocated ankle. It didn't hurt when it happened, thanks shock, but the 3 days waiting for surgery were intolerable even doped up.
Got two: In high school was having a keg party at my parents' house. Somebody accidentally (I hope) turned on the stove top. Somebody says, "anyone smell something burning?" I lean over and place both hands on the counter, left hand directly on the red-hot stove top. Immediately recoiled and looked at my hand -- I will never forget seeing the blisters rise in real-time like the circles of the stove. 2nd degree burns all over my left hand. I told my parents I was trying to cook eggs and burned my hand. Not sure they believed me, but they probably thought I'd already suffered enough. 1st year of law school I was playing flag football and tore my ACL. That sucked, but wasn't the worst pain. Had to repair my ACL and do a microfracture procedure (trying to regenerate the cartilage in your knee). First surgery was only ACL repair and less-invasive cartilage regeneration -- that didn't take. So 9 months later had to get a 2nd surgery, known as an OATs procedure -- they literally take a surgical hammer and nail and knock holes into the bottom of your femur to aggressively regenerate the cartilage. For this surgery I got a nerve block for basically my whole right leg, so the afternoon after the procedure I was basically crutching around fine. I'll never forget when the nerve block wore off at about 2:00 AM in the morning after surgery. I shot up like the fucking exorcist in the most excruciating pain of my life. A deep, shooting pain into my right femur. So bad. I guess the third is when I have to read bertwing post.
Had the toenail of my big toe ripped out with a pliers. I caught the top of the toenail on something and the sides/middle got pulled from the skin, but the root of the nail was still completely attached. Went to the local small town doc and his idea was to take a pliers and completely rip out the nail without giving me anything for the pain first. Also, he was a part time farmer, got called in from the field, and had a giant chew in while he did it.
1. The month after I fractured c6-c7 vertebrae of my neck. It wasn’t normal pain, it felt like lightning bolts moving through my body anytime I tried to rotate. 2. I was participating in a job walk at a 2:1 combined cycle power plant for a prospective project. I tripped on a piece of grating. My immediate reaction was to grab an uninsulated steam pipe. Bad decision which melted my right hand.
Got some spermicide up my urethra several years ago having sex with my now wife. I went to pee an hour or so later and I dropped to the ground hunched over in pain. I had some allergic reaction that took a day or so to subside.
I also sat down funny on the couch about a month ago and pulled a muscle in my lower back or hamstring. It hurt so much to the point where I could not physically stand all the way up and walk because I was in so much pain. Went to an urgent clinic and they gave me a couple shots that helped and was almost completely better the next day.
Getting stung by a stingray was pretty bad. The pain itself wasn’t the worst Ive ever had (although it was bad), it was moreso that it was nonstop for 8 hours and there was no relief from it.
Used to have gout attacks in my ankle. It really doesn't seem comparable to some other posts, but they were fucking crippling...I'm a pussy
Badly sprained ankles a couple of times playing basketball throughout the years. All in all, have been bLeS$eD *knocks on wood*
I had this happen to me 3 years ago when putting on my shoes. I was brewing some beer that day, so I kept having to lift heavy things. That night, I had to crawl to get around. Next day, I went to urgent care after attempting to go to work. No shots for me, but gave three prescriptions. On the way to the pharmacy, I kept hoping I wouldn't have to brake because it hurt too fucking much to do it.
Got about 100 bee stings around each ankle. They swelled up to the point that I couldn't move them for a few days. The swelling/venom caused horrible pain for a week or so.
I suffer chronic dislocations of my left knee cap. Thankfully it happens very rarely now that I don’t play sports but every time it does I want to die immediately Spoiler Last time it happened I was stepping off an elevated dance floor at a big party and I collapsed into a mud puddle and cried like a bitch for 10 minutes. It was so terrible.
1. Getting shot. 2. Jumping out of a moving car on the freeway. 3. Neck tattoo that reaches my skull.
After tearing and getting my Achilles surgically repaired, they initially put you in cast with your toes pointed straight down so the tendon can be in a relaxed position to heal. It’s a pain in the ass to be in a cast for 4 weeks with your toes pointed straight down, so heading into the doctor to get a new traditional position cast, I was pretty stoked. However, after removing my old cast the doctor said he need to “stretch the tendon” to see how well it’s recovered. Very simply flexed my foot up and down 12 or so times….and it felt like Lucifer himself was reaching from the depths of Hades to rip my lower leg to shreds. My sister, who drove me, said I went from peach to green to a shade of white a person shouldn’t be able to create. I vomited in a trash can from the pain. Do not recommend.
Haven’t had kidney stones but I saw a guy laying down on an ER waiting room floor who had them. Nurses asked him to sit in a chair and he told them no and that was the only position that didn’t hurt. Poor guy was walking around completely bent over. They found a room for him shortly after that #lifehack.
I think back pain/issues are worse on you mentally just from a "is this going to get better/am I ever going to get back to a normal life" perspective. I fucked up my back deadlifting. It was only bad for a few days but I was seriously worried if I'd ever move around normally ever again
I also broke both arms concurrently (one compound fracture) in the superdome 4 hours prior to the Bama/Utah sugar bowl. I was chatting with my brother on the way to the field and didn’t notice the steps. I was sober
Gout sufferer here as well. My first gout flare was one of the worst bouts of pain I’ve ever had. It was in my foot and it swelled so badly that I could barely wear a shoe. I’ve taken Allopurinol daily ever since.
