This caused me to go on my annual search for Winds of Winter news and according to some sketchy sites they've set November 13, 2023 as the release date. That's so obviously just a date they picked to get people off their back, if it's even real.
Sanderson already said he wouldn't be interested even it was offered. Writing style is too different/more graphic.
This would be great, but they're splitting up to write their own stuff individually. Im not sure they have the interest in getting tied up in another series. Hope Im wrong about that
IMO - It could be an over simplification. If youre being generous to Rowling she absent mindedly used anti semetic tropes that have just been accepted as stereotypes without much intent. Like an unconscious bias. If youre being less charitable there was some intent. Based on her other views idk how much benefit of the doubt she deserves. I fall somewhere inbetween
I'm not Jewish, so it's not really for me to say...but I'm inclined to agree here. I don't think that was the intent here but it's pretty easy assumption to make, based on how shitty we already know she is as a human.
I'm not Jewish so I won't speak to the extent of the offense/damage this may have caused. But to me it screams of the kind of empty woke identity politics that have been the hallmark of the liberal identity for decades. "Let me show everyone how morally superior I am by criticizing the use of an old trope in a children's movie!" Does nothing for anyone which is what libs love
I mean there is a Star of David on Gringotts floor in PoS. But that’s a Columbus decision I imagine. also, Stewart is pushing back on the framing of his comments.
Without reading any of this because I'm lazy: Is the basis for the argument the design of the goblins as seen in the movies? That's less cut and dried than something JKR wrote or hinted at in her text. If this is just because the goblins are greedy well that's just silly. If it's because "they're greedy and have big noses" you'll have to point me to the description in the books that lead to that stereotype being promoted. Otherwise I'm willing to chalk it up to an unfortunate coincidence that goblins are often depicted looking that way and Rowling made them the bankers in her universe (because trolls and dragons and most other fantasy character-types were already taken)
Stewart is a relentlessly good guy. I would never wish it on the real Jon Stewart but if we could repeatedly clone him and just keep having successive clones (so they don’t become too too jaded) be our president, problem solved.
Doing a binge of the movies. All the book lovers, what drives you most crazy in the movies compared to the books? I always absolutely hated them burning the Burrow down. But I now have something worse in my opinion. The whole Department of Mysteries scene in the movie is just fucking awful. The flying around is the dumbest thing in the world. And I know they had to cut it down for the movie but so much was left out of the scene. Would have loved to seen the other rooms in the Department of Mysteries as well. Would have loved to seen the Death Eater get the baby head
Mine is known since I never shut the fuck up about it but death eaters and the good guys flying around doing spells. It’s awful and fucking terrible. I realize things don’t always translate from book to movie and things need to be altered but when it’s made to be such a big deal that Voldemort could fly without a broom, people believing Harry isn’t articulating himself because he couldn’t have seen that. That’s something you can’t just have everyone doing
I literally just got so mad inside as I watched the Department of Mysteries scene watching them flying around. Also I just thought about it, we NEVER see Peeves in the movies
That was the other I was going to post about the other day and forgot The backstory of Nevilles parents get tortured to insanity. We see Mad Eye use Crucio with Neville there and see him freaking out. Then there is a small statement from Neville in the movies about it but there is basically nothing
Now Im thinking of so much more The Quidditch World Cup. No Ludo Bagman and they have the Weasleys not sitting in the Ministers box and Malfoy making fun of how high their seats are
I try to separate the movies from the books as much as possible. Problem is the movies are kinda crappy for the most part and don't stand on their own very well. Like if you're going to make drastic cuts and changes to the source material anyway, do it for real and spend time actually developing the shit you do include
The Shining movie is drastically different from the book in terms of the specific beats of the plot. But they're both fantastic and nobody cares that the movie is different
There are so many things that the movie got wrong or didn’t include. One of the worst things that they missed was a chuck of Voldemort’s backstory in HBP. I’d really want them to do a reboot on HBO Max if it wouldn’t put money in that TERFs pockets.
3 was my favorite book and I realized how bad the 3rd movie was just recently. Then I looked and Alfonso Cuaron was the director and I wasn't shocked anymore. Gravity is the top of my list for WORST movie of all time
Yeah, you always lose stuff when going from book to movie and with 4 it was obvious that a bunch would have to go, but I thought 3 failed more than the others in its choices. 1&2 were really quite good translations but admittedly they are also the thinnest books. I just hate that they don’t explain what the stag is about and also mostly just make a patronus out to be a ball/wall of light. That’s a real important story point that the director said “nah, fuck that” to. The doe in Hallows makes no sense if you haven’t read the books.
Had my work task for the week cancel due to unforeseen issues so I binged all 8 movies the last 4 days so I’m pretty much an expert now
Pray we get an HBO or BBC show of the books in my life. 10 hour plus episodes for each book. Someone do it.
I enjoyed Gravity but it's certainly not a perfect film. But are we really going to act like Cuaron isn't a fucking great director? Also 3 is the best movie. Divergences from the book and all
Maybe if I saw it in the theatres it'd have been different. To me its the most boring movie ever. I just hate it
This is probably a big factor. I only saw it once in the theater and it was cool as fuck. The cinematography really shines in that setting
Also still funny how JKR made such a great story about inclusion and everything and then turns around and becomes a giant bigot
3 is the best movie and a large reason for that is it has the best director in the franchise. Also helps that the book is awesome and not gigantic like 4 - 7.
Yates talks in the HBO anniversary special about how much he loved the final battle scene and that the grabbing and falling/flying part just felt so right with their relationship. I almost cut it off right there. Such shit.
It's my favorite. The stylistic transitions are the best, and the Daily Prophet theming that sticks around for most of the rest of the series. The costume shifts, and so much more. My problem is really just the extreme rapidness at the beginning up to getting on the Knight Bus.
Same thing applies to the first LOTR trilogy. Everyone knows the second trilogy is just a giant money grab but the first movies still hold up. You can make story changes and still put an amazing product on screen.
We do this once or twice a year and I never hate the opportunity to shit on the movies. They are fine for entertainment value and getting into the Harry Potter feel, but some of the changes they made are unforgivable. Its been mentioned but giving everyone the ability to fly is bonkers. I will never forget reading that chapter in DH and being blown away that Voldemort could fly, especially considering how shocked the characters were. Just throwing that in there made no sense to me and I think there were plenty of better ways to show fighting on screen. Harry not fixing his wand at the end of DH has always rubbed me the wrong way as well. The entire last book was built around the DH and the fact that Harry was in possession of all 3, thus giving him the ability to fix his wand. Showing that onscreen would have been so cool and true to the book. Quidditch world cup, changing it so that the Weasleys were sitting in nosebleeds instead of the ministers suite, makes no sense. There were plenty of little changes like this that made no sense to me and just annoyed me.
The wand thing really bothered me, by the way my wife has been stuck on HBP for like 3 years, I was listening to how did this get made around the beginning of the pandemic and Zooks randomly yells “ it’s just like dumbledore dying” I played it off like he was kidding and being an asshole and she’s probably forgotten by now but I don’t know how much longer she’ll be able to live life without finding out
