    Hi neighbor :peekaboo:.

Driving via Rock Creek to 66 seems equally miserable though. That intersection of Rock Creek Pkwy, Virginia Ave, and 66 by the Watergate is alarmingly poorly designed - I'm shocked it's been allowed to persist that way for so long. Even worse than Dave Thomas Circle IMO.

I’ve probably been a half dozen times since we moved to the neighborhood. I’ve been doing my best to keep local spots open.

Very sad Airedale closed, used to come up there from downtown to watch soccer.

btw, there's several of these pedestrian bridges in our area that I can think of that are in *rough* shape.

Ped Xing bridge over 395 in Shirlington comes to mind.

Thought the same but I'm sure traffic is absolutely fucked and the fallen bridge won't be cleared until tomorrow night. At a certain point, you have to get the word out to as many people as possible because I'm certain it's an enormous headache trying to clear that area.

Heading to DC for work in a few weeks. Tons of great options laid out in this thread… many of which I’ve gotten in on during past trips. Any of you savvy beltway folks have recommendations for good record stores?

It would be interesting to hear what others have to say. I’ve never gone to a store since moving here cus I assumed I would never find value. But maybe I’ve been naive

For the most part I’m just interested in a cool place to kill an hour or so after a beer or two. Don’t necessarily need to buy stuff. Over the years I’ve come to learn a quality record store is a great way to get to know a city a little better and is usually off the beaten path.

I’m not sure of its COVID status, but it sounds like Smash in Adam’s Morgan would fit what you’re looking for. Many bars close by too.

Yeah I'm not a record guy but from a quick google, it looks like they're all in pretty cool neighborhoods. Can't speak to any of the record stores, but here's a brief rundown of the neighborhoods:

Smash Records is in Adams Morgan, DC's original hipster/punk rock/funky neighborhood. Now mostly overrun with drunk 22 year olds at night, but maintains that funky vibe during the day. Lots of coffee shops and local restaurants, seems to have avoided the national chain invasion.

Both Som Records and Joint Custody are in the 14th/U area. Think gentrification. But not a bad area really, you're just going to get a few more Lululemons and West Elms mixed in with the local spots than you would in either other area. Bonus is you get two within a few blocks, and it's honestly probably a nice walk from Smash Records if you're down to walk around and see the city (if you're coming soon it will be hot and humid).

Byrdland looks like it has the best reviews and is also in a really cool "up and coming" neighborhood. Some definite gentrification going on here as well, but in more of an industrial vibe. Union Market nearby is a cool food hall with a lot of variety for lunch. Also walkable to H Street which is a cool area, but otherwise it's on a bit of an island in terms of walkability to other neighborhoods. Just going off the vibe I'm seeing from Byrdland, it may be the same owners as Songbyrd, which is a cafe in Adam's Morgan that seems like it would co-own a record store.

Really can't go wrong with any of those neighborhoods, just depends on the vibe you want.

also Songbyrd in Adam’s Morgan has records but they are more of a coffee shop by day and music venue by night

I thought I heard Songbyrd closed.
Byrdland would be fun with the new Latin market right nearby - La Cosecha.

Speaking of which, since moving to North Columbia Heights / South Petworth, I've become obsessed with PanAm Market on 14th. Closest I've come in D.C. to feeling like I'm literally in a different country. Basically, anything you're cooking that is hispanic, you should be buying your ingredients here. Obviously the selection isn't as good, but they have anything you'd expect to find in any sort of latin american cooking.

Not only are the prices absurd (10 limes for a dollar, a dozen jalepenos for $2, bulk dried chiles of every kind), the quality is better than you'd expect at any local grocery store. The butcher in the back cranks out freshly butchered meat at an incredible pace. Though, I'm not certain they have an A+ health grade - I mostly just avoid the fish and seafood, though I'm sure it's probably fine.

Definitely check it out if you live in the area, a total hidden gem.

I recently moved to the DC area and have been having a hard time finding a job. Moved here because of my significant other being in law school in DC. I’ve been working retail and am trying to find a job that would be more Monday through Friday and 9-5 hopefully. Just looking for an entry level position but haven’t had any luck. Was wondering if anyone had any tips to finding a job in the area?

hello there, this worked for the Chattanooga thread so figured I'd come to you guys for some advice.

My wife's uncle lives in VA just outside DC and is dying. Cancer. hospice has been called in and all that. We are planning a trip just the two of us to go see him on Thursday to say goodbye and then make a weekend out of it in DC. They weren't super close or anything but she loves him and wants to pay her respect before he passes. She will also be 26ish weeks pregnant with our third child and since we always do some kind of "baby-moon" around that time, we figured may as well make DC the babymoon. Neither of us have been since we were kids on field trips so it's all pretty fresh. Leaving the kids with my mother.

So far all i have done is booked the hotel. We have a room at the Hay Adams For Thursday-Sunday near the end of February. I have a friend who gave me a good list of restaurants for dinner. (Le Diplomate, Rasika, Reverlers Hour, Tail up Goat, Lapis, Anju, St anslem, Fiola Mare, RPM Italian, and Thip Kao) any other good restaurant recommendations?

Also, what the hell should we do? obviously I'm super close to monument park so want to make the rounds there one day. I would also like to book a good spa appointment for my wife if y'all have any recs there. I loved the Smithsonian as a kid. Anywhere else that maybe isn't as obvious? Just any tips in general would be appreciated. TMB always delivers.

    TIA!

Sushi taro / o-ku if you’re into sushi. Seven reasons (Latin). Chloe. Pappe (Indian)

I love the Dabney, Maydan, Compass Rose, and Rose’s luxury. All excellent. Compass Rose is tiny and Rose’s Luxury doesn’t do reservations, so may be hard to get into.

    Le Dip is classic DC.

Don’t bother eating anywhere downtown near your hotel. Old Ebbitt is decent and also classic DC, but overpriced and overrated.

(Almost) all the museums are free. Best part of DC. Look up all the various Smithsonian’s and pick your poison. I love the Zoo personally, as well as the natural history and air and space museum. If you’re looking to do more adult stuff without the kids, you might want to save those for a kid trip though.

I thought I read that Air and Space is temporarily closed?

Osteria Morini, Ambar, and Salt Line - all in Navy Yard - for more casual options than places like Rasika or Fiola Mare. Can’t go wrong with the Jose Andres joints in Gallery Place, either, which is walkable from Hay Adams.

Where in Virginia will you be for the first part of the weekend? There are a shitload of good neighborhood joints sprinkled around from all of the immigrant communities.

bring your best walking shoes. You’ll prob log 5 miles doing the Smithsonians.

took my parents to Ford’s theater to see a play (Death of a Salesman) and it was great. Obviously historic but it was actually really cool. Might want to check out things going on at Kennedy center too.

Went to the bar at The Riggs last night before Kacey Musgraves because my wife's friends set it up. Was pretty impressed by both the cafe and the Silver Lyan. I typically avoid hotel bars like the plague. Good place for before a show (expensive tho).
