Do any of y'all give joint supplements to your old doggos?
I'm looking to get my big girl started on some and was wondering which brand/style (chondroitin, etc) you use.
    TIA

Cosequin for our older one. He is still very spry but is a big hardcore barkour wild animal. Vet basically said never too early to start, given his size.

He is a picky eater but takes them straight with no issues.

Looking for some advice. We had two shar peis, both born in early 2010. Their life span is 9-11 years, but both have had health issues that were supposed to cut their life short.

Our girl passed away in April/May of 2020 (I think I posted about it in here). She had chronic health problems and we were able to have a plan in place with our vet of when to put her down at our home.

Our boy has kept up, but over the last few months we have noticed he hasn’t been as active. He has always chosen to spend his time outside, but had been spending a lot of time inside with us. I noticed two days ago that he wasn’t really eating much but he was fine until last night. He

He came in the house last night and was having trouble walking, was shaking, his nose was running, and he looked confused. He wouldn’t sit/lay down and we spent about an hour with him before he went outside. He took a long piss and drank a ton of water. He ended up sleeping outside on our patio which is pretty unusual (I woke up several times and looked at him sleeping). I went outside this morning and he woke up but still just looked confused and then laid back down.

He HATES the vet. We have to sedate him and our vet comes outside for his appointments. He won’t let any other vet from the practice touch him even outside. Our vet left for a new practice in the area in December but we’re not established there yet. I am going to try and call her new hospital at 8 to speak with her.

I really don’t want to take him into the vet if he is passing due to how stressful it is for him. I also don’t want to neglect something that can be treated. I’m lost on what to do. Looking for some advice.

He has never been aggressive towards humans besides vets. He doesn’t like her but he tolerates her for the most part and let’s her touch him. Even then, she doesn’t like to see her and he hasn’t been inside the vets office in probably 5-years.

At the old vet she was part time, so I am hoping she is working today when I call. If she wants to see him, I’m really worried about freaking him out and I’m not sure he can even get in the car at this point. I’m also going to call a mobile vet at 9 to see if they can come to our house.
that’s kind of what I thought, but apparently from my internet research strokes in dogs is rare. It was a pretty sudden shift though.

Update: Spoke with the vet this morning. His vet still only works part time and wasn’t going to be in until Saturday. Spoke with the main vet though who recommended bringing him in. Dosed him with a bunch of Trazadone and got an appointment for this afternoon.

Bowser started cocking his head as the day went on. It looked really off. By the time I went to take him to the vet, he was so lethargic I was able to pick him up. When I put him in my truck on his side, he began trying to roll the wrong way and looked like he was seizing.

Got him to the vet, and the vet quickly diagnosed him vestibular disease: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/vestibular-disease-in-dogs The vet said its basically like vertigo for dogs. From what he saw it was due to a “lost nerve” in his neck and not in the brain. Said it looks really bad but it isn’t and that he should be through the worst of it in 48-72 hours and make a full recovery in 2-3 weeks. They got him some fluids and liquid nutrition and sent us home. Just have to help him walk, pee, and eat until he is through it.

our dog has developed a habit of going outside, and then just sitting and waiting for me to come out and throw the ball with her

she’ll just sit out in the snow, looking at me through the window and wait

and just a couple hours later!

Sorry man. Judging by your pics, he had the best run he could have had because of you.

I think I told someone this before, but when I had to put my first heeler Pancho down, someone told me they were sorry it hurt so bad. I told em if it didn’t hurt, I did it all wrong. I don’t know if you can find any solace in that but it helped me. You did it the right way.
