So I wouldn't be surprised if this weekend in the Colombian jungle was a fucking superspreader event. 6 of the 8 people in our tour group have tested positive/are experiencing symptoms. There were more than 50 ppl total sleeping at each camp.
TC you could just start out by going to a bouldering gym in the area. It's a fucking amazing workout. Then come to WA and climb Rainier with me.
There's a climbing wall at the university gym here, but other than that no idea anywhere to climb within 100 miles. I think people from here go to north Georgia
I grew up climbing Yonah Mountain in N GA. The road to the top was open back then. A neighbor owned the climbing store in my town(Biners) and had a wall in his yard. He taught us and would take us up to Yonah. Really cool face and has a cool Boulder too.
I know you are talking climbing but I've hiked Yonah a couple of times int he past 7ish years. Clear day you can see all the way to Atlanta. Fun little hike too.
Do you just hike the road up now? There was a small trail from where you'd park to the top of the face way back when. Are the falcons still up there too? Half the mountain used to be off limits for them. Was cool to look down from the face and see them flying below you.
What are peoples favorite books about the outdoors? I read Bill Bryson "A Walk in the Woods" -- did not like his style. Loved "Hatchet" and "My Side of the Mountain" growing up
Confirmed for March 12 - March 16. Carnaval was recently canceled so made planning a bit easier. And now part of the natural immunity gang gang.
Hopefully everyone has to prove they've had all three doses. Would suck if American tourists were out there spreading a deadly disease to indigenous populations during a global pandemic
I also hope youre testing negative before every hike you go on. Hell of an assumptiom, tho. I'm vaxed and we tested prior to leaving the US. So unless youre arguing all tourism should be shut down, or the guided tours should be suspended, I think your snarky comment is misguided.
I'm not interacting with indigenous populations and I've also tested negative every week since like last January Not boosted = not fully vaccinated. Probably not a good idea for people who aren't boosted to be interacting with indigenous populations. But hey live your life and spend that money
I think you're using the term "interacting" pretty loosely here. Hope you don't fall off your high horse buddy.
And I hope you don't spread Covid to the indigenous people of Brazil. Although their government probably wouldn't mind
No dog in this fight, but I’d say this counts as “interacting.” “You don't camp and set up tents, but rather stay in indigenous homes with families that have lived there for 100s of years.”
I thought he meant 'interacting' while in Colombia. I'll be boosted prior to going to Brazil regardless.
Looking for a new sleeping bag. I have a North Face and I think it's a 10 degree, it's 20 years old and was given to me by a friend. It has so many holes in it from sleeping outside of a tent from festivals and backpacking, it's worthless now. Any recommendations for cheaper, decent bag?
I have a kelty mistral 20 that I like for what it is. It’s not going to be down filling or the most light bag or pack down to a tiny size, but it’s a great value. https://www.rei.com/product/199745/kelty-mistral-20-sleeping-bag-mens?CAWELAID=120217890011964001&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=110328467641&CATCI=pla-431793886936&cm_mmc=PLA_Google|21700000001700551_1997450001|92700056454454888|NB|71700000066696194&gclid=CjwKCAiA0KmPBhBqEiwAJqKK46dkTD8yxdlTEoPxe6nBqwi2hoQQFa2oYja5YRA04oxwSVv18LotdxoCA0cQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Staying in the San Juans this week. Woke up this morning and did a nice 8 mile jaunt to Turtleback Mnt. Spoiler Also, had no idea Gary Larson was from here. Themoreyouknow.gif
Staying at the the Ahwahnee. Hope to catch the Firefall, do some lite hiking, relax & hone my landscape photography skills. Open to any recommendations for winter hikes, if you have them... we'll have all our cold weather gear
I mean even if he was still boosted he could still technically spread it, really the only way would be a negative test.
Orcas Island is the best island on the San Juans imvho. Those islands are such a hidden gem that few people outside of the PNW know about. The rain shadow is a real thing there and its fantastic
That's where we stayed. Despite living here for 5 years, had never made it up there. Pretty spectacular. We'll certainly be back.
Didn't we have a poster here who worked at REI? Trying to figure out if there's an idea of when the 20% off coupon will hit
since it is mid-February, figure I should look into making reservations for the hiking season. Unsure exactly what to do. Need to dig into it
You ever been to Medicine Bow National Forest? Perfect winter hiking environment Elite XC skiing too, with total isolation at your disposal
4 day mountaineering course + 2 days ice climbing upcoming in Cairngorms National Park. Airport experience today has been a nightmare but should be boarding soon.
Hung up the skis for good back in June when I relocated to Duluth after 14 years :( Bittersweet really. Lots of changes over the years and I’ve had lots of friends leave due to management/store rules changing. Oh well. Will probably go back for another year or two when we leave Duluth back for a bigger city one day, need to lock in that permanent lifelong discount. That said, dividends should hit your mailboxes end of the month/early march if nothing has changed this year. They haven’t been sending coupons with the dividends the last couple years, they usually follow a couple weeks after iirc. Change pushing people to spend $ at full price then come back and spend more once they have a coupon and no dividend.
Rainier and N Cascades national parks have reservations open from March 2 - 17, then "randomly" draw from all applicants. Me and 7 friends trying for the Wonderland Trail, 90 mile loop around Mr. Rainier. Olympic national park is just 6 months in advance, got one weekend booked already. Planning to do PCT Section K in mid-July. Or, more accurately, about 90% of Section K, I think just under 100 miles, and end at Stehekin.
