This isn't new. UM people have been saying a deal is done for 10 days, but he hasn't signed it. No one but Harbaugh knows what any of it means.
Yep. Going to be stuck with an under qualified nobody or a retread that no one else wants. I’m sure these interviews go about as great as his press conferences.
I don't know anything about your search, but Dodds does this to every team he interviews for, I think. Not sure if he just won't leave Indy or if he leaks it when he finds out he's not getting the job. Either way, I don't think it says anything about the quality of your search.
And our media won't report on any of it. They just allow this shit show to go on. I was listening to the Adam's and they spoke about Ryan Pace not being allowed to interview HCs he wanted to when he was hired and George forcing him to interview guys that George liked, that basically Fox was a George hire forced on Pace. They knew this info then and are only reporting it now... Shit like that is why this Franchise is allowed to run the way it is. God forbid they actually turn the heat on the McCaskey's...
I feel like that has been out there for a long time (that Fox was forced upon Pace) It has always been the case that they swing too hard to fix what was wrong with the last guy. Going from Lovie > Trestman > Fox > Nagy.
I would imagine this is one of the few NFL jobs he would jump back for. I don’t think George wants anything to do with him since he hates our former players.
I know that I said hiring a HC before GM isn’t the worst thing. But my thinking was the HC would be Jim or someone like Sean Payton. Not this…
The Adam’s interviewed someone from Indy who had a lot of good things to say about Eberflus. In the Dungy/Lovie tree as far as coaching, preaches toughness, turnovers, hustle, etc. Grade out “loafs” and will bench starters over them, say one of the highest paid safety’s in the league doesn’t touch down a receiver after he’s beat, he wouldn’t go back on the field. That’s all good but the most important thing is developing Fields and any of these Def candidates better have a plan set in stone to do it if they’re chosen. Same guy also said Morroco Brown was Jerry Angelo’s like hand picked protege. I doubt Angelo had an ear with George anymore after things went south though.
I don’t give a shit about toughness… this next hire must be able to develop fields. If he can’t we’re fucked for another decade.
“Developing Fields” seems like a cop out in case he’s a bust, like there’s no way Fields can not make it in the NFL and it be his fault. You can look through the NFL landscape and there’s just as many hits at QB that weren’t “developed” by offensive minded HC’s as not. It’s not an exact science and if Fields is good enough he’ll make it. Don’t get me wrong I’d hope the new coach has a good plan to put fields in the best chance to win but we’ve also have to avoid the next Nagy and Trestman who were labeled “QB guys” and teams were soft as baby shit.
Our last two head coaches were offensive minded and we were arguably the worst offensive team in the NFL the past few years. There are metrics putting us worse than the Jets in certain aspects of the game. If it wasn't for the historic '18 defense we'd have nothing redeeming about this regime. On top of that Pace was a young GM that came from a well run (in terms of results) franchise so on paper it was a match made in heaven and look how it turned out. At the end I want the best football mind, doesn't matter if it's a defensive one.
If fields has the combination of talent, drive, and work ethic he’ll do great things in the NFL. McDermott didn’t develop Allen, Belicheck/Brady, McCarthy/Rodgers/Dak the list goes on and on. I’d Like for us to hire a HC who runs a physical ass football team and hired a OC that runs a QB friendly offense like Shanahan, McVay, Stephanski.
I just want the GM to currently be a scout and not head of pro personnel. Kind of why Brown is my guy
Watching the 85 30 for 30, who else remembers the day Walter died? I was a Soph in HS. My friend Josh and I would always skip out on lunch and go to get fast food or to my house to raid the fridge. I remember microwaving a frozen burrito and him turning on sports center and hearing the news. I felt dead inside, didn’t go back to school. One of my most vivid childhood memories.
The geniuses could of just hired Ballard instead of Pace like the entire planet outside of Halas Hall said they should. Both of those candidates could of already been here.
I'm sure everyone watched that Bills/Chiefs game and thought to themselves that the coach they wanted from the Bills staff was Frazier and not Daboll. That's a fucking horrendous final three.
Caldwell is fine. He's like the Kirk Cousins of coaches. Perfectly competent, for better or worse. I wouldn't be excited about him if my team hired him again, but there are people who probably would excite/intrigue me more who will turn out to be worse coaches than Caldwell. His coordinators weren't very good in Detroit, IMO, and I think he needs very strong people in those roles because he's not a difference maker as a coach on either side of the ball.
I actually think Caldwell would be perfectly average .500ish coach for a while until it craters and he is fired. Chicago could definitely do worse. My biggest issue is it’s stale and lacks any aggressiveness to it at all which I think is now the hallmark of this ownership and regime. And I full well acknowledge aggressiveness can go horribly wrong.
I have zero interest in being “fine” I would much prefer to roll the dice on Daboll or Leftwitch vs bringing back an average at best HC who you admit struggled to hire great coordinators. 3 of 4 teams left in the playoffs are built to win shootouts with explosive offenses. We have a QB who I believe can be elite. Give me Daboll or Leftwitch and stop living in the 80’s thinking we can bring the 85 bears back.
We just fired a decent players coach who wouldn’t hire a good OC because he wanted that role. And missed badly once Fangio left for Denver at DC.
I feel like it’s so hard to say what makes a great head coach. Head coach of the bills was a defensive guy, bell jock was a defensive guy and a failed head coach, Andy Reid was never an offensive coordinator. For every McVay there is a Nagy.
Being average is worse than tanking in the NFL. I’d rather have another year of Nagy with Vic back as DC than hire Caldwell
He was OC at Arizona and he was OC with Winston as QB and they put up the 3rd most points in the NFL. He’s more than Toms OC.
Interim OC in Arizona.. and yea he basically is just Tom Bradys OC He's been a coach for just 5 years
