Orange crowned perhaps? The bill in in the first shot is throwing me off for common yellowthroat but the mask is as well.
Though it's kind of hard to see in the photos, it had a lot of black on its face, which is what's throwing me off. I can usually tell if it's an Orange Crowned with the eye ring and the undertail coverts. I guess it does have a faint eye ring though.
Just spotted a brown creeper in my yard, which makes neighborhood bird #77 for me. Awesome little bird that I rarely see, so I was pumped to see it.
Those are so cool. Went years without seeing them then worked in Oklahoma and saw them daily outside my house on the refuge. Now haven't seen them since. So tough to find.
Apparently it's stain from sap, and it's an Orange-crowned Warbler. Saw an Egyptian Goose the other day, crazy fuckers.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/11/28/bird-feeder-pecking-order/ Fascinating, though a lot of this is lived experience if you watch your feeders often enough.
I’d say that’s accurate from what I have seen. Mourning doves frequently get bossed by birds way down on the list though. I think they are way too high.
I think I’ve replaced/refilled my feeders more this week than I have at any time in the past several years. The winter warblers (pine, orange-crowned, and yellow-rumped) are living on the suet feeders and I’ve got mixed flocks of 30-40 blackbirds (including a rusty) hanging around at any given time. Going to go back to ace tomorrow to really stock up since we’re about to have some possibly severe winter weather roll through Saturday night and these little guys need all the fat reserves they can get.
I rarely get blue jays and it kinda bums me as they’re one of my favorites. I just really love corvids.
I just threw out a bunch of peanuts, mainly to keep the squirrels occupied and off my feeders. It’s hilarious watching them burry as many of them as they can in the shortest amount of time possible.
I really wish I could go see the Stellar’s sea eagle in Maine. Unreal journey this bird has made from Alaska to Texas to Canada and now New England. https://www.audubon.org/news/inside-amazing-cross-continent-saga-stellers-sea-eagle
Went to a "lake" east of L.A I've been sleeping on. Saw a Belted Kingfisher and a bunch of other stuff, will post photos later.
T'was a good morning, got some friends to roll with me. We drank beer by the edge of the water and looked at birds. Spoiler The spot. Belted Kingfisher Say's Phoebe Northern Flicker Ring-necked Duck Ruddy Duck
Decided I'm gonna take a couple weeks and do a road trip with some birding thrown in. Will be going to SE Arizona in late April, since that area is like a birding mecca. Hopefully since it's during migration I'll see a lot of cool shit and get some lifers.
Fuck it. I just pulled the trigger this morning and booked a cabin up in Madera Canyon in April a couple days after this music festival I'm going to. If I see an Elegant Trogon I might shit myself.
I saw several species of trogon (gartered, black-throated, collared, and orange-breasted) in Costa Rica. Truly magnificent birds.
I usually have one of these (usually Panama or west Texas) up while I work. Not sure if the thread was familiar with them. Panama can be super cool at night too, with a variety of small mammals coming to visit.
Article I wrote about the Red Headed Woodpecker that was published at Congaree National Park as an intern. Looking back, it was pretty bad. I don't care about people knowing my name.
Finally pulled the trigger on a telephoto lens. Was quite the quandary. I have wasted a lot of time researching my options… I should be able to touch the little birdies from afar, in a week
Re-reading this. SIAP. Fascinating. https://www.audubon.org/news/inside-amazing-cross-continent-saga-stellers-sea-eagle https://ebird.org/species/stseag
Rescued a red shoulder hawk from the side of the road. Good movement was using both legs, believe it got clipped by a car and hurt a wing maybe. Currently have it in a large cat kennel with a bowl of water. Covering it with sheets so it can relax. Please advise.
I should say this is a 6.5 foot tall homemade kennel with multiple levels. Not like a little cat carrier. It's outside. Temps are highs near 50, lows in the high 20s. Does get some sunlight in current place but idkwtf I'm doing
Yeah I'll see if I can find an appropriate number to call. Was just trying to get it set up for now so it could relax
Take it to a certified avian (raptor) rehab. That’s it’s best (and likely only) chance for long-term survival. DO NOT give it water http://www.rrca-raptors.org/
Removed the water. Don't believe it's moved again yet so it didn't have any. Just found those numbers as well. Was looking a more local officer but not finding any so I'll contact the game and fish guy
Its extremely difficult to become a certified rehabber, but some will go out of their way to meet you half way.
Talked to Rodney. He's with the raptor rescue. Sent him some pictures and videos and he believes it's not fixable, shoulder broken through near the joint,, and I should euthanize the bird.
Unfortunately that’s how it often goes. Bummer man. You can try to keep it comfortable for a while and talk to other folks just to see if someone will take it with the understanding it won’t be able to be reintroduced to the wild.
