I am getting quotes to re-surface/tile our pool and possible replace our pump for a variable speed pump.

    I have a STA-RITE 1.0 HP (S.F. HP 1.25) Max-E-Pro with a Pentair Clean & Clear cartridge filter, model CC150

I was told there are not many options on the market right now for pumps and my contractor says all he can find for me is a Hayward TriStar VS HP 1.85. I'm not sure if the change in HP is something I need or want.

I read that HP isn't as important as GPM flow rate matching the filter. My filter is rated for 150 GMP. The Spec sheet of the pump tops out at 1130 GPM and at low RPM is about 38 GPM.

On top of that my pool has a 1.5 inch line going to the pump now, then goes to 2 inch to the filter than back down to 1.5 for the return. This pump has 2" couplings.

I guess I'm asking if I'm being sold a pump that will either not work with my filter and if that pump is appropriate to replace the one I have?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have an automation system, mechanical timers, or just run scheduling off of the existing pumps programming?

I have an old school mounted timer. The kind with the big yellow 24 hour wheel and the movable metal tabs to trip the contact to turn on and off power to the main pool pump.

The existing pump has no programing available, it is either on or off. I assume if I get a VS pump I can hardwire it and do away with the timer box.

Send me a pic of your pool and equipment if you do not mind. You can message it if you are more comfortable doing that. Also, what city are you in?

I would see if the Pentair WhisperFlo TFC 1.1THP is available (manufacturer part # 015583).

    I can purchase for $616.96 + tax
    I install for $1097
I sub-contract for companies that I sell them to their customers all day long for $1697.
You can buy online for $759 (online Pentair equipment purchased only gets a 60 day warranty)

Not that I am driving to Orlando, just giving you a price reference.

    Thanks.
Here is the pool, it's actually bigger than most the new plunge type in some areas.
There was a solar heater on the house piped in that never worked, so I'll be removing all that crap when I have the new pump installed.

It will be the 3 intake lines (main drain, vacuum and skimmer) and 2 return lines.

I had to run and get a sheet of plywood. 25mph nw winds with gusts to 45. Had to block the wind some because I am getting battered over here.

Making good progress. Hoping to have all plumbing done today. Then beers tonight. Then do the computer and all electrical tomorrow while hungover!

Folks, make sure that before you let anyone encase your plumbing in concrete at the pad, they give you a very good reason. An additional $1000 to bust concrete out on this pad reset. All because there was no plumbing to grab onto.

anyone got a reccomendation for a pool toy to give to a 12 year old boy? Neighbor's pool is getting finished this week and they are throwing a new pool party that is doubling as a birthday party for their son so we don't want to show up empty handed.

Wanted to get him a toypedo like I had as a kid, but apparently those are super dangerous and now banned?

My son and his buddies played with our basketball goal in the pool for hours. Not sure what models are out there now but ours sat on the side and was made of plastic. The base filled up with water to hold it down. I think it was less than $100. Best money we spent on a pool toy.

Had one as a kid as well. LOVED it. However, they already got something similar. (a much nicer version)
apparently they poke eyes out and were discontinued. The replacement is some small version that barely goes anywhere. OG used ones sell for $50+ on Ebay (I am 100% buying one for myself when our pool gets built)

Seems like a good time to remind people that pool floaties and toys are great. But, they need to be removed from pool after each and every use.

They restrict circulation and flow and can cause costly damage to equipment. I have had to replace numerous pumps due to toys getting sucked into skimmers and clogging up suction manifold. Silly to burn up a $2-3k pump over a $5 toy.

Google the top 100 builders in the country. Meet with whoever is on the list from your area. Will pay a premium, but won’t have to worry about builder going under.

Sigh. Wife wants to start getting quotes. Question for the thread. We put in the below fire pit last year. Is it possible to keep that and incorporate it into the pool design? The space in front of the columns on each side is 28x14, so about the size of a standard rectangle pool. Plus, I have a covered patio that’s the same width and about 5 feet deep. Theoretically, couldn’t we just rip up those pavers, put a pool down and reuse the pavers we put down as a pool deck and surround?
