Only made it through half of new Dark Funeral, never been a huge fan of them but this album seems to have excessive suck compared to some of their others.

Speaking of Century Media artists I was just listening to a band called Slaegt. New 2022 album but Metal Archives tells me they've been around for a decade or so. Today was the first time I've heard them, I don't really keep up with the 'big' metal labels anymore, they all seem to be chasing the next trend. They're described as "Black/Heavy Metal". Anyway, they've got that pretentious trendy vibe, same vibe I got the first time I heard Ghost. If you're into that sort of thing check them out, it might be for you. Speaking of Ghost, I think I'm going to listen to the new one tonight, I already have a shitty taste in my mouth after Slaegt and Hyperia and if I'm going to continue making fun of something/someone I should at least be familiar with it.

Not really sure who this Deha guy from Belgium is but he's released 27 solo full length albums since 2020. What is it with some of these musicians thinking every thought they have needs to be recorded and released? I shouldn't care but it bothers me.

I remember them from the 90's but I don't think I ever bothered listening to them. Are they gonna be one of those Ulver/Burzum deals where they use to play traditional black metal then turned into an instrumental Casio X700 act?

    No.

I would give some quality time to these albums and then let me know what you think. His discography is super varied and unique.

Memoria Vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars
    Hallucinogen
    777: Cosmosophy

the whole Memoria Vetusta trilogy is some elite black metal (folk influenced if anything), but those other two are great examples of some of their other phases: psychedelic and industrial.

It's ok if they aren't that type of band, I could likely get by on some old Urgehal for the time being. I'm running out of shit to listen to so I'm a bit panicked.

Edit: Speaking of Urgehal I need more aggressive black metal like them.

Yeah, I think it’s primarily Vindsval on all instruments. Maybe he has a session guy or two on occasion, but he writes everything and performs almost everything.

In my opinion, Ultima Thule is the most aggressive album in the catalog, but it’s also their first album and the closest to “raw black metal” that they have.

Rest of their stuff is definitely thinking man’s metal. There are better bands for raw black metal aggression, if that what you’re looking for.

have you tried Misþyrming and the Icelandic scene?

Definitely not looking to think tonight, just kill. I listened to that Mispyrming awhile back and enjoyed the chaos. Went with Urgehal for a bit now I'm revisiting Decapitated. I'll save Blut for when I'm not multitasking while high.

About an hour ago I discovered a brand new 13 year old Gorod long sleeve sitting in the bottom of a drawer. Process is my favorite album from them so I'm pretty geeked.

Thinking about going through the Meshuggah discography after I finish Decapitated but I'm pretty sure it's just going to piss me off. Been meaning to do it for awhile now, hoping I've been wrong this whole time.

This sums up every track on Meshuggah "Nothing". Verse? Chorus? Bridge? Not necessary, it's just the same repetitive shit played at the same pace song after song after song with some lyrical ramblings mixed in. This might be the worst metal album I've ever heard. Ghost? Musical Gods in comparison.

...and it looks like "Catch Thirtythree" is starting out the same way.

Rational Gaze rules. I can definitely see how it’s not for everybody though. If dumb time signatures and impossible polyrhythms are not extremely your thing, a few of those Meshuggah albums can get super repetitive.

Fair point. Meshuggah were incredibly innovative in this area of metal, and other bands have taken that torch and gone other interesting places with it. To me, there is still nobody better at it than Thorendal and Haake.

Rolled out of bed hoping last night was nothing but dream but alas. While I'd like to forget all of yesterday it's unlikely I will as those polyrhythmic numbings are still embedded into my brain today. I would like to add that None and Destroy Erase Improve were two of my favorite albums of the 90's. After going back through Nothing and 33 I remember why I completely gave up on the band at that point.

I tried to take something from each album and save it in a folder to revisit later and Rational Gaze was the only song I took from that album. I get that you love the song but I view it more like buying the best crappy house in a really shitty neighborhood. I took absolutely nothing from catch33.

Tonight I have lined up the discographies of Tristania and Tristitia, mostly because I can't remember which is which. One I remember being female fronted symphonic metal and the other I think was doom. I was never big on either band so I shouldn't be up at 2:00am yelling at clouds again. If I run through those too quickly on standby I have the discography of Agathodaimon, mainly because they have a new album and I forgot they existed. With any luck something new will leak between now and then and I wont have to go through any of this shit.

Just totally different beasts. From Mars to Sirius was fairly revolutionary as well. Gojira is more of your traditional prog metal with hints of jazz, African beats, and latin. They also formed 15 years after Meshuggah, so i’d be pretty surprised if Mario Duplantier wasn’t influenced by them in some form. They’re kind of bands from different eras.

Meshuggah spawned the djent sub genre (mostly bad), but bases their entire sound around a fucking impossible polyrhythm scheme in which the drummers hands (cymbals, snare, hi hat) are usually in 4 or a derivation thereof, while his feet are playing along with the guitarist in shifting meters of 7s and 9s and 11s and all kinds of utterly preposterous shit. They’re also big fans of dissonance, and so there’s a lot of competing sounds going on. Honestly, a lot of Meshuggah is a labor to listen to, and it usually takes me a long time to figure out if I actually like an album of theirs, or if I just want to like it because it’s Meshuggah. If you’re not into it, they sound exactly like burnttatertot ’s post above.

    Within Temptation
    Lacuna Coil

Going through my CD racks to find female fronted 90's symphonic/goth bands and came across this, one of my finalists for 2016 album of the year.

A whopping 100 views in 5 years. Makes me think maybe the problem isn't everyone else, maybe it's me :/

Some gems from the past few weeks

old school 90s style semi-symphonic raw BM, kinda Burzumy kinda old Satyricony

you punk haters will loath this, I love everything this guy does (Spectre from OLD NICK) this almost sounds like ILDJARN playing BLACK LIPS with an album cover that looks like it was designed by Master P

Depressive doom-black-ambient originally released in 2013, like SKEPTICISM or ESOTERIC with elements of black metal

Solid melodic BM with the requisite flute breakdowns

Heavy rhythmic industrial doom metal from the guy behind PRIMITIVE KNOT, slightly more symphonic and atonal at the same time (wouldn’t let me imbed)

    https://deathbedtapes.bandcamp.com/album/questionable-strategies

A little something different — this is one of best new record labels around; music inspired by Italian films giallo/horro, Italian pulp, old German kraut/komische; thought it may interest some here

I never could get into symphonic black metal. It's the "symphonic" part. If I want to listen to symphonic I will listen to some Bach....actually I can't seem to like mixing of genres at all. Like rap/metal for example. If I want to listen to rap, I'll listen to Scarface or 2pac.
It's like having a universal part. Chances are it doesn't REALLY fit anything
