yeah i dont have much personal experience here. i've struggled to nail down a good source of information about this, like a compatibility chart. i've just heard it mentioned a few times.

i heard it yesterday, in fact -- some youtube hvac guy referred to Bosch as "one of the few" brands that "still lets you buy a thermostat from home depot."

My folks are getting up there and have come to the realization that they really can’t run the household like they used to and falling is also a major issue. As such, they will be moving to their old folks home in town, probably w/in next 18 months, certainly within next 2 years.

They are really hinting/pushing me to take the house. Same house I grew up in. Great house, great location, definitely needs significant upgrading. I think the appeal is keeping the house in the family/maintaining a central house for my sisters and their families to stay when they come into town, sentimentality basically.

My major hesitation is whether it’s weird to live in a house as an adult with my own family, that I grew up in.

Putting that in writing, seems a pretty petty and insignificant issue. But something I’ve been thinking about nonetheless.

How would it work as far as the sisters are concerned?
I'd be more worried about then making it weird, or thinking it's unfair to them even if you are buying them out.

valid point. I guess I just assumed that because they live elsewhere and will never move back to our home town, that they wouldn’t have any interest in it, which is the case in all likelihood, but certainly something to consider. They are both way older than I am, although they may have some sort of expectation w/r/t to the value of the house

You have to offer to pay them or take a cut on any inheritance/estate stuff otherwise. This kind of thing can get nasty. It’s not just the siblings involved but in-laws and such that make it more complicated.

Play out the scenario where your parents have some kinds of increasing medical expenses or something and that becomes a shared burden. Or one of your siblings families has an economic need.

The valuation of the house as an asset will become real very quickly.

How does all of this not end in 4-5 years with another massive recession when people can't afford the mortgage they overpaid for? Wages aren't going up enough to justify the market price hikes, are people just draining their savings to historical lows to make down payments?

I just don't see where the money is coming from for a majority of Americans to support the insane offers they are making on houses.

Appreciate the thoughts. Definitely need to consider impact on my sisters, and I’m not trying to get into a thing about this. Will have to think through it a bit.

I’d also make sure your parents have it very clear in their will how they want the house handled, or if it is sold to you outright that the will is updated and the home is no longer contemplated as part of the estate.

    For sure.

Ray buys a new car. In-law will KNOW they could afford a new car too if they hadn’t gotten ripped off by Ray’s swindling of the family estate. They don’t call it the green eyed monster for nothing.

we are a family of attorneys, so paperwork is locked down, will/estate wise. Not gonna lie, the more I think about it I’m kinda being selfish af, as I wouldn’t want this to impact the estate as it pertains to inheritance.

This happened with my dad and his sister. My aunt was the only of the four siblings who stayed in their home town. Everyone else moved to the west coast. When my grandma moved into assisted living the sister (she had PoA), without discussion with the other siblings, moved her daughter into the house. The house wasn't worth much. Small home in a dying town in rural Iowa but the lack of discussion about the whole thing kicked off a complete dissolution of the family. My cousin ended up selling the place, once again without discussion, and now we have no connection to the homestead. It's a mess that could have been mostly avoided with just some discussion and agreements.

At least in texas, people are using their liberal California avocado money to buy houses with cash, so no real risk of that here

I’d check to see if you have any open box appliance stores in your area. Majority of the time they are gonna be like new or very minor cosmetic defect and you will save a good chunk of change.

Our price-to-income situation is much better than many other (free, capitalist) countries.

Eventually voters will figure out that home building makes RRE cheaper. That could be a generation away tho. :twocents:

Bought the cheapest dryer we could find 4 years ago. It’s been progressively drying slower, took 3 rounds to dry a large load today. I figured for sure the little guy was on his last leg.

Took the back cover off and vacuumed out the guts. Bought a vent cleaner attachment for a drill to clean out the vents in the wall. Voila- it’s like I have a new dryer. Makes these beers taste just a little better tonight.

Just a quick update. I went back and forth on making this purchase. Had my dad willing to go halves on a good sized gas chipper and then even found a place to rent. I made the purchase anyway and this little chipper is so far awesome for my needs. Had a bunch of sticker bushes and other small bushes branches that I had to clean up. It’s not the fastest but definitely does the job. Huge reduction into chips as it claims 20:1. It’s very satisfying to watch this thing work.

Anybody have a whole home humidifier? One that is incorporated into the hvac. Any recommendations? Our house is painfully dry in the winter. Would like to get something installed before next winter, but I don’t want a bunch of maintenance headaches.

Just hooked up a chandelier in the dining room, so budding electricians, AMA.

I would especially inquire as to if you need to thread the power wires through the mounting nut so the cover plate can be threaded on, and if that should be considered before hooking the power up

This is what we have. The only maintenance is changing a filter annually and turning it off in spring and on in the fall. I tweak the level occasionally with temp/humidity changes.

After a day of destructing, sawing, and hammering out corroded stakes, I've come to a take:

He who installs metal edging should have to die in the house or be legally obligated to remove it upon selling. Holy hell

Mine was probably 30 years old and had warped and corroded, so I couldn't separate the pieces. There was about 100 feet of this shit that I had to cut with a reciprocating saw every few feet, and then hammer out each stake that was placed every 12 inches or so. Because it was so warped, I had to take a screwdriver and loosen the brackets individually. Brutal shit.

My advice would be to just get plastic edging to avoid being cursed for eternity
