Personally, I don't think clemp advertises enough that they developed the premier trash man in Charleston, SC. I fully expect them to have a commercial for the University highlighting his achievements ready to go this fall.
I can’t wait to see that Dabo quote cropped into inspirational backgrounds for all the Clemson fans with haters.
Listening to ESPNU and Rick Neuheisel close ranks to defend him was funny. Of course, they focused it all on the class warfare between the Ohio Sts and LSUs and MTSU and La Techs of the world.
Saban’s comments is more of a warning and the issue with Dabo’s comments were not so much about his concerns about players being paid it was his hypocrisy. His comments justifying coaches getting paid millions because we live in a free market society, but somehow the players should not benefit from said free market society.
Saban’s comments were just like his comments on the no huddle offenses like 10 years ago Then he went out and hired Lane Kiffin
It’s also like his comments on the transfer portal, he’s not objecting to it, he’s straight up warning people that if this will be allowed he will use it and benefit from it more than other teams.
I think some coaches are concerned where this is headed which I get and I think a lot people don't know how this ends and it may not be good for college football... But maybe college football deserves to die if it exists by exploiting players.
Was I supposed to think that Nick Saban wasn't going to figure out a way to benefit from a rule change?
Lincoln Riley is disgusted that NIL is being used to recruit players. That's not how it was supposed to be used.
I think his comments are directed at those who run the NCAA, they, in terms of college sports, are the only ones stupid enough to not see where their actions or inactions will lead.
This is where I am. It's going to completely change (at least out in the open) something I love but I'm not selfish enough to want the players to continue to be screwed for my personal enjoyment.
OK but where is it leading? Alabama still getting the best players except now they are getting paid for their labor "legally"?
Hats off to Dabo, he was able to pull off a couple fluke championships in a period where only he could pay players
Yes, that’s where we were and where it’s leading, all these rules changes are constantly justified as leveling the playing field but in the end it just gives the big boys a bigger advantage. The NCAA dropped the ball with NIL by doing nothing about and letting this be decided by the courts.
I'm going to have to take your word for it on this. I'm not sure how anyone could have thought that but I'll admit that there are a lot of bad takes out there.
Top dogs will stay the top dogs, but you'll get some random schools (see A&M and Tenn) pulling in guys they normally wouldn't, because an NIL deal.
I'm not saying I agree with Dabo's statement (I don't), BUT I get where he is coming from wrt NIL. From a completely Clemson perspective NIL is going to hurt us quite a bit. We have a pretty decent alumni base but we don't have near the money to compete with the big schools. Hell, our annual enrollment is like 25k so we aren't a massive school with tons of alumni to call upon. It won't kill us but I suspect we will fall back to the upper pack of the ACC, winning it here or there and competing for it most years. Not complaining abt that fact, just offering my two cents.
The problem with what Dabo said is that when coaches pay was brought up he justified it by saying that we live in a free market society and that is justification for coaches getting paid millions. He also used Delta for comparison and stated that the CEO, which is presumably the equivalent to the HC, does not get paid as much as the baggage handlers, which in context that would be the equivalent to the players and that is complete bullshit. Clemson’s success has more to do with 2 of the so called baggage handlers (Watson and Lawrence) than it has to do with the so called CEO.
You’re sleeping on venables and our DLs those years that’s like 8 more baggage handlers iyam so checkmate
Why not have a g league in football similar to the NBA or Korn Ferry Tour for PGA? That way if guys wanted to get paid for playing immediately from HS, they could go that route instead of being forced to get a college education. Some guys are just ready to go to work. 90% of these scholarship football players couldn’t get into major colleges anyway, so no reason they should have to take Biology 101 if they don’t want to. But, still offer free education, free housing, free coaching, training, nutrition, etc for those who want the college experience and want a degree. I’m assuming the NFL doesn’t want to devote resources to a developmental league.
id rather him just make that argument - that he is against it bc it is bad for Clemson. Than doing the current bit he is doing. Have a feeling this is going to be an aaron rodgers like summer for Dabo re: player rights. And being insulated by that media market is enabling him to act like a bufoon.
I think it was just really bad timing. Had it been in 2000 or so it would have been much better but the gap between schools has widened substantially especially with money
I agree Dabo is a dumbass for many reasons and the Deshaun situation is sickening but that contract doesn’t really have anything to do with Dabo. Plenty of other things to legitimately shit on Dabo about but I nominate the Vols to take the blame for that contract
Idc about widening or closing the gap in college football competitiveness. I care about players getting fairly compensated for their labor. Coaches and programs will find a way adapt. Maybe people will stop watching cfb. okay, they’ll start watching something else then. and then that thing will need performers and I hope that thing fairly pays it’s performers as well. EDIT: shouldn’t say “I don’t care”, I do care, just not as much as I care about players getting fairly compensated.
If you want to close the gap, hold schools to the hard yearly scholarship numbers. No more over signing. There are some aye to create more parity, but the elites really only want to focus on the money aspect.
I'm not sure how it doesn't end up a disaster. The "intent" of NIL was players to be able to make money off their name from sponsorships, autograph signings, etc. I think it's a bit of a bastardized concept when every OL who goes to Texas gets $50,000. Transfers OL from ULL getting $250k or the QB UT kid getting 4 million or whatever. That's not really "sponsorship" or NIL. That's straight up paying kids. What the fuck are these kids advertising? Bryce Young got a 7 figure contract form someone....not sure I ever saw an ad he did (maybe I missed it). I'm not against it. I don't really want regulation of it and want these kids to max out all their money...but I'm not really sure how this ends up. At some point some school (probably A&M) are going to stop shelling out cash for 8-4 seasons. There is no ROI from this money besides any happiness you get from your school. It also seems kinda weird b/c kids are just being bought by billionaires.
This is where I am. I want these kids to get every dollar available, but the idea of Tennessee just buying kids who would not have otherwise sniffed that school is a problem. I don’t have the answers, but this is bad.
maybe it starts to equal itself out after 98% of these high priced recruits produce bags of hot smelly shit for their investors Probably not
This is what I’ve been thinking. The businesses throwing money at recruits don’t stand a chance in hell of breaking even on their investments.
Jackson State buys a top 10 guy = cool the little guys are now at the table Tennessee buys a top 10 guy = this is bad
