Yesterday hurt. Thought I was finally going to post a score.

+1 through 12. 13 is a really tough par 4 with a narrow landing area. Striped a 3 wood and had like 135 to a back pin. Shot is on an extreme upslope playing to a back pin. 3/4 9 right at the stick. Thought I was all over it. Just long into terrible lie. Double.

    * Lip birdie on 14.

    * Short par 5. Little hooky off the tee but it’s always fine here. Should still have a long iron home at worst. Ball lost in the rough. Triple.

3rd round this year and broke 80 with a 79, so I’m happy but fuck

Shot 80 in a tournament last week with 40 putts. Ordered a new putter that will be here in a few weeks. Played yesterday with the same putter I hate and shot 68 with 27 putts. Stupid game.

Watching what they do out there is insane. We had a section championship out there and it was a bloodbath once you got past the top 10-15 guys.

What do you do getting guys to the range and some of the other really long walks between holes?

I think -15 under won last year. I wish the tournament was this weekend. The course is firm and fast and it has been really windy these last few days. I’d love to watch them play in the wind.

There are shuttles to the range and to the bottom holes.

He played in the PGA thing last week. I was up there this morning to get my tickets and clean out my locker and he was working his ass off getting ready. I think they need him working but it would be cool if he tried to play one year. We have it for two more years.

I am not good at golf, there was a time in 2019 I was shooting mid and low 80s, but I took some time away mostly because of work.

played first two rounds in half a year this weekend and man I just love the game, it's fun even if you aren't good.

Started figuring some stuff out the last few times on the course/range. My miss with the driver has always been right. At least some of it has been because of how I line up. I’ve always had an “open” body shape, which started with basketball. When shooting free throws my right foot would be straight at the hoop, and my left would be pointing at like 10:30 and that felt “square.” So that same thing felt “square” with my golf set up. So I’ve started setting up comically closed, left foot pointing at the ball and my right foot almost a full foot behind what would be actually square to my line. I’ve even used it on the course and I’ve hit some of the longest, straightest drives of my life doing this and have lost maybe 1 or 2 to the right the whole time. My aim gets wonky right now, but it’s a interesting development for me.

Bandon remains undefeated, such an awesome place and impossible to not enjoy yourself (proven by my truly horrid golf at Sheep yet it still being my favorite course I’ve played). We had picture perfect weather the whole time right after them getting solid rain for 5 days. New ranking after this trip: Sheep, Bandon, Trails, Pacific, Old Mac

The whole NLU crew are great people and really seem to appreciate how lucky they are. Neil, Soly, and Ben were all a ton of fun to play with. Ben was the most personable but that probably has to do with living a few hours from him/having more in common to chat about. Neil came off as the most authentic and exactly the same as in all the videos. Soly had the business side turned on for a while because our caddie wouldn’t shut up and one guy was fanboying hard, but later in the round we got to chat more and he’s a great hang, very easygoing (and loves transfusions). DJ had to back out due to getting Covid in Scotland. They’re all just normal dudes that love golf and it shows.

Just because of timing restraints? Pacific went up for me after playing it twice this trip, it’s very polarizing and you can eject quickly, but so good. One day the greens were rolling about as fast as they can get and they had some very questionable pins that led to a 4 putt in our group (may or may not have been me), but it’s a blast. I love the 17th there. Old Mac is worth playing and still very fun, it just doesn’t have the pop that the others do.

Let me know if you need a caddie rec, my guy Tom is a pro’s pro. He’s a little brash, but works at LACC in the winters so he’s got some credentials (he’s not the caddie that wouldn’t leave Soly alone)

Thanks for sharing! How did you and the NLU guys shoot?

Feel free to share any interesting stories or tidbits they talked about.

The top 3 I would want to play with out of the NLU crew without having actually met them would be DJ, Soly, and Neil so seems like you got a good draw.

I did not have the swing working consistently. Ben is a great player but had some bad mistakes on a few hole stretch, could’ve easily broken par on Sheep. Playing Pacific and Sheep in the same day is brutal on the greens because you go from the fastest to the slowest on property, and my putting stats were atrocious. I got it going on Old Mac and shot 80 with a horrid triple on 16. Last day I played well on Bandon and shot 79 with a lousy double and may have beat Neil straight up, certainly did with pops, then my back was friend on Trails but I made every putt I looked at and shot 80. Soly played ok there but my partner and I beat them 3 ways and both won $15.

I honestly talked to them very little about NLU overall. They said at the opening dinner that they love these trips because they like to recharge and just play with friends when they’re not making content, so I took that as a sign to not talk shop. They honestly all seemed like genuinely good guys and all spoke at the closing dinner about how appreciative they are of all the support and how much they enjoy seeing the golf community of total strangers acting like close friends. All the guys somehow remember your name after meeting once which is insane to me. I also met Bunkie Perkins and he’s a great guy as well.
