This is why this movie isn’t great. It has potential and Pattinson nails Batman but his Bruce Wayne is absolutely hilarious. There’s a ton of good performances in this movie but the overall product just doesn’t do it
I didn't feel like the Bruce part was all that integral to the film tbh so it really didn't bother me.
idk if talk is spoiler or not anymore so just in case Spoiler I dont mind that it didnt have a lot Bruce Wayne, but I will say if this is the first time someone is seeing something Batman related I dont think they get the full picture of the character I get that we dont need to see his parents die for the 15th time, but this movie basically doesn't touch on the duality of the character at all by pretty much ignoring Bruce completely
The newish trend of just making genre films set in superhero universes is the shit I'm here for. This movie was basically Se7en in Gotham. Big fan. Gimme a Thor romcom and I can die happy
Se7en + Zodiac, a sprinkle of Saw with some Batman Year Two. Mix em and cook em in a pot like gumbo = The Batman
This post is from May 2019. What did I know? https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/09/09/robert-pattinson-the-batman-coronavirus
Fuck maybe I drank a few more than I thought last night. I saw it in theaters 3 times. Something seemed different. Ignore me haha. I still love the movie.
I have now watched him go into the chair as Colin Farrell and have piece after piece of makeup applied and I STILL can't believe that's really him.
I think one point this movie was going for was Bruce hasn't learned how much of a difference he can make from that side of things yet. I'm guessing we'll see a different Bruce in the sequel.
Pretty obvious from his interaction with the (soon to be) mayor at the funeral and his reaction to Alfred about the Wayne Enterprises accountants visiting He's lost himself in The Batman and this movie ended with him realizing that he can and should be more
A lot are missing how integral to the plot it is that Bruce is not "Board Room Bruce, Wayne Industries CEO" The money left from his father, which Bruce should have been looking after and using in Wayne Ind, was instead being funneled around by the bad guy white collar criminals with Falcone and Penguin on the side. Riddler exposed all of this, and helped Bruce realize he needed to be more hands on. This was literally a conversation between he and Alfred in the movie. It blows my mind that people want to critique what Bruce WASN'T in this movie when thats a critical part of his character development
this is why I qualified it to "if this is the only batman thing someone has watched" this movie requires the fact that you have prior knowledge of the character if you had no knowledge of the character previously, you wouldn't understand the complete duality of bruce wayne/batman which is one of the key components of the character if the character moment at the end is "Bruce" saying "i'm gonna change this city, im gonna fix what my father did and invest in this city" then you can say "Bruce" was a character and had an arch, but that didnt occur so there really isn't any kind of Bruce character
The very quick conversation with the soon to be mayor at the funeral sets up his family legacy and the perception of him neglecting it
right, and is there a scene im not remembering toward the end of the movie where he says how he is changing that (as Bruce)?
So you need a scene of both Batman AND Bruce saying he's going to do better? It wasn't enough for the closing monologue to feature Batman saying exaclty that? Not to be a dick but it was pretty explicit. I think you just started off annoyed that Bruce didn't start the movie as the trust fund playboy and ignored the arc. Batman and Bruce's stories are perfectly entwined here. Bruce didn't want to be Bruce. He just wanted to be Batman, leaving his family legacy to crumble. This is the crux of the argument with Alfred. What he didn't realize until the rooftop scene with Gordan and Catwoman was the white collar criminals Riddler was targeting were taking advantage of the fact that Bruce Wayne wasn't keeping an eye on how his dad's investment was being spent. At the same time, Batman was just being a vengeance-seeking vigilante. In the end he realizes the city needs something more than that. It needs hope. If you don't think the next one will play up the idea that both Bruce AND Batman are better people coming out of the first story, and that Batman will be more heroic and Bruce more philanthropic, I don't know what to tell you.
I do think if he was at the side of the mayor at the end saying how he's gonna help fix the city it would've given Bruce an actual character arch. I do want to say I still like it. It was just a side critique. I'm not saying that it's bad or unwatchable bc of this. It was just a reply to the post I quoted.
and all those things are fine it's why my first post started with "I dont mind that it didnt have bruce" and qualified it to "if this is the only batman thing someone has ever seen", which is why it's just a minor critique
That was great. The riddler was a little too QAnon and the MSG scene was too close to Jan 6ish. Pattinson and Kravitz were great. Dano was a great riddler but holy shit Barry Keoghan as the joker would be amazing. Killing of a sacred deer was so good
Currently watching, like 15 minutes in. Weird (not bad) to hear real music being played after the Nolan movies.
i'd imagine there is probably some 9-13 year old that this is their first batman anything but that's not really my point, it's more you have to be able to watch this movie in a vacuum because it's the nth iteration of it to be able to judge it against others
Just got done watching. Really liked it. Similar to the Nolan movies I liked how it was “realistic” for lack of a better term. Riddler character was awesome/wild, a little scary that last plan he had I could see happening in real life. Watched the deleted scene and the Joker character seems like he’d be great too.
