Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave!! is the best podcast in the history of podcasts. Burr & Virzi together is decent, worth a laugh sometimes.
Breezed through American Radical this week and now listening to Tiffany Dover is Dead. Both very good.
Anyone else listen to a crime or other storytelling or historical podcast and imagine all of the people, places, and events in your head a certain way, then google it and have it look not even close to how you imagined?
No but I often think of what podcasts hosts or guests look like. Then I google them and it's almost nothing like I pictured.
This reminds me of when the local morning radio guys showed up to our high school for some pep rally thing and everyone was like "Wait I thought you guys were cool... you're weird nerds."
This reminds me of when I was a kid and WiLd98.7 was “started by two teens who stole their dad’s boat and were broadcasting from out on the water” and I totally believed it. https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1998/08/09/radio-station-s-wild-idea-catches-on/?outputType=amp
The neighborhood listen is a fun little listen for fans of Paul f. Tompkins. He and another comic are locals responding to concerns in the community. If you're a pft fan, the one he does with his wife is extraordinarily adorable and a lot of fun
Really enjoying the BTB on John Wayne. Ep. 2 he is shitting himself to death but won't stop drinking as to not appear weaker than the other alcoholics on set.
That's not even the best part of the episode Spoiler The part where they talk about filming Genghis Khan in Nevada down wind from Nuclear bomb testing sites. They asked the gov if it was safe, and the gov said yes. It was not safe. The crew all got massive doses of radiation. He died from cancer that likely developed from that radiation.
I still love BTB but I find any episodes featuring Sofiya Alexandra extremely difficult to listen to because the producer Sophie has a horrible habit of laughing at anything Sofiya says no matter how unfunny it is and that laugh is like nails on a chalkboard.
Listened to my first BTB podcast recently after seeing them mentioned a lot itt. It was the first two parts on John Wayne. Are they all so politically motivated? I was expecting to get into all the details on why he is a piece of shit, but they would rather spend time comparing him to Trump, bashing Christianity, saying that 9/11 wont be remembered, and how white males like war so that they can kill people only. Dont want to turn this thread into politics, but couldnt believe how political this pod was.
Usually quite political but the JW one is not quite the same as ones with dictators or other people who actually caused lots of human suffering. They usually have more horrendous material to work with. But everyone involved is usually millennial or gen z leftists so yeah
I would probably listen to a few others before deciding how you feel about it. The one on Leopold and the Congo is really good. But yeah it’s pretty (far) left leaning. Robert is a big time lefty but with guns.
Yeah, I will try one of those others out. I was just expecting more of a biography than a politically rant and it caught me by surprise.
I’m a big fan of BTB, but as mentioned above Robert Evans is unabashedly lefty and leans more towards the anarchist side of anti-fascist. I don’t always agree with his political takes, but there’s no denying he’s extremely well researched on his topics. In most episodes I think he does a reasonably good job of not letting his personal politics get in the way of the factual presentation of his subject matter.
I dont mind Robert. The way he talks is weird and quirky, but it's natural to him. My annoyance comes from Sophie and his frequent guests that for some reason always mimic his speech patterns. It comes off very forced and awkward. The probably dont even realize they're doing it. Idk why but it happens to so many of them. Makes me think Robert would be a great cult leader lol.
Evans is great, Sophie's laugh is turn off worth, the guests can be solid to how the fuck are you on this podcast, I can't listen to this. The guests typically do a try-hard routine of trying to sound like an expert instead of just acting as a color commenter.
how could a show discussing dictators, billionaires, genocides, and colonial empires manage to be so political?!?
agreed on the guests. robert can always carry a show but you can tell some of them are not prepared to engage with the material at all and can only provide unrelated comic relief
i thought this was the point. The guest comes in without knowing who the discussion is specifically about or without knowing the full story and Robert shares it with them and they discuss it as they go.
i mean like mentally prepared. they don’t ever really engage with the topic. the formula really works when the guest is being funny in a way that ties in to the narrative and larger context of the episode
Things are getting wild in podcastville. Apparently the female comic podcast, Trash Tuesday (featuring Khalyla, Bobby Lee’s girlfriend) made some thinly veiled accusations about Brendan Schaub. Then Schaub and Brian Callen made threats toward Bobby Lee because of what she said. Then Bobby and Khalyla were on H3 podcast and Ethan basically goaded Bobby into talking about it (Khalyla seemed excited to talk about it). Then Brian and Brendan got on their pod and apologized like idiot children. Then Brendan came on Tigerbelly and it was awkward AF. There are allegations from Schaub saying TigerBelly is running the TFATK troll sub Reddit. Which is hilarious and apparently Brenda has spent half a million investigating. basically everyone sucks except for Bobby, apparently. I’ve been home with COVID tracking this soap opera. I’ve found the schaubenese used on the The Fighter and the Kid subreddit to be hilarious. Just hundreds of people causally responding to posts with “water we dune hair bappa” and “tonknbout the trugg walg?” I’m going to go now.
They got you! Admittedly, I have no knowledge of any of this saga other than knowing Bobby Lee as a comic and former cast member of Mad TV. I knew he had a podcast, too. What I find most interesting, though, is how specific our entertainment options are these days. And I love it. We all have choices to find the stuff that makes us laugh, cry, get angry, or find joy. What a world.
That's a bummer. Use to be one of my favorite podcasts. They really lost steam after the one host stepped down because of Me Too stuff. That said I thought the last two episodes were really good and felt like the old ones.
