With things seemingly getting dumber and more regressive, has anyone seriously considered what their breaking point would be for uprooting your life and making a change? Either to a more normal state or even a different country.

I haven't yet and probably wouldn't if I didn't have kids, but it's finally hit me that the time may come at some point. Just curious if anyone has gone beyond internal worrying.
    • Do I want to stay in a place that deprives people of rights and meaningful elections?
    • Do I want my kids to be given a whitewashed education?
    • What if one of them lives a life that a 90 year old white guy doesn't personally approve of?

I’m too old to relocate, but if I were younger, I’d be looking into leaving this country.

I could sustain my current salary, or make higher, by moving to another country

also being able to see my mom/dad/brothers often would be v nice

My wifes high paying job would make it pretty hard to leave. Would take things getting pretty bad to bail. Yet we get closer to that threshold ever year.

I live on the west coast, so don't have much need to leave the country, although the country is fucking embarrassing and I'd love to move back to Spain.

I regret not moving away at least for a bit when I was younger. Not necessarily out of the country but at least to a more progressive, exciting area.

Now that I have kids, it would be really hard to give up the support system we have. It helps that KS (currently) has a democrat governor to keep things from going completely off the rails. Of course, that will likely change soon.

I don't make enough money to relocate, especially outside the country. Also, I don't think I would do well moving away to the point where the only time I might see my family and friends is at a holiday. I'm 37 and an introvert, the vast majority of people I meet these days are married with kids, not exactly the type of people that will have much of any time to do any friend stuff with me. Though I guess to be fair, outside of work, most of the interaction I have with friends is via text anyways, because you know married with kids, so :idk:

I can do my job from anywhere but our parents and friends are all in Tampa. My son is just finishing up Kindergarten and starting to make good friends. I moved around a bunch as a kid from 2-8(Texas, South Korea, Japan) for my dad's job so hopefully we are here as long as my son is in school. Hopefully I never have to move. Cant think of anything that would make me that I could foresee happening.

This is where I am. We have good jobs, family nearby, and a good little system set up. My breaking point is still far off, but it's wild to think that it could be a reality.

As someone who already has [not because of these reasons, but it doesn't hurt], each day makes it more and more difficult to think i'll ever want to go back to live. It's just the UK, so it's not like it's some progressive Utopia, but the difference is getting larger and larger

The only thing really leaving me hanging on around here is my parents and how involved/supportive they are with my son and potential future kids. They might pack up and follow if we leave, tho.

I don't know. My wife and I discussed it earlier. I would have to take a completely separate bar and what I've done doesn't translate to other states so I would need to take a GC type position and take a pay cut. My wife is also absolutely balling out in her position making double what I make and is going to be named head of all mid-level practitioners at her practice with like 20 offices. Hard to abandon it for uncertainty. I also have two boys that I'm raising with a liberal mindset that go to a liberal school and the older one listens to news based podcasts almost everyday and constantly asks questions about politics so I'm inclined to have him here where I think he can do some good for people because he's a kid that is the first with his hand up for any volunteer opportunity.

    1) I don't live with my parents. I do live in the same city though
    2) They will not be going in a home, nor will my brother and I be selling it. As part of the transfer of ownership, which was done to prevent it being potentially taken by debt collectors upon their death, we agreed to let them live in the house until their death. Even if they wanted to go into a home, I wouldn't do it unless they begged me, the best skilled nursing facility around here could be at best described as bad.

I read some shit about it a while back. They’re trying to incentivize immigration because they’re having brain drain to other European countries. And COL doesn’t look bad compared to the rest of Europe.

Same and in a spot with a few…rougher edges (China). I’m much more inclined to look at opportunities in Japan/Korea or Europe than back home. Completely disheartened by what’s happened with the pandemic mostly, then top it off with the regression to pure bigotry and fascism, and yeah, no thanks (if I can help it).

I haven’t met my 6-month-old niece yet though. That side of things sucks.

Moving from AL to WA in 2017 remains the best decision I've ever made in 34 years of life.

Having said that, it's not really a state thing anymore, it's just city vs rural. Some country parts of WA are just as red as the deepest pockets of AL.

Really want to become fluent in Spanish to explore a Mexican citizenship or something stronger than a standard tourist visa, but I'm pretty lazy.
