If you buy property they make it relatively easy. If you spend 500,000 euro on a home you qualify for the "Golden Visa" which gives you status immediately. My fiancé and I just purchased 2 properties in Portugal and are going to get our D7 visa. We need to have 700euro/month in income, 8000euro each in a bank account. Allows 2 entries up to 4 months in country. Can be converted to a full residency after 5 years. Most of the coastal cities speak English. Tons of UK citizens vacation there as well as expats moving there in large numbers. As you get further inland you hear English less and less. It is a very difficult language to learn.
Our neighbors moved to the US from Australia in 2020. They said it's a huge pain in the ass to move to Australia. Speaking of which moving to the US is a giant pain in the ass as well.
I’m moving from liberal Oregon back to Nebraska (long story short, my wife is a twin and she wants to be around family if we start to try to have kids). I’m excited to see my old friends a lot again…and that’s basically where it ends. A guy accused of groping 7 women has a real chance to win Governor from a guy that’s a billionaire piece of shit. The only hope is, among those group of friends, a lot of shit has changed in our views. Hoping we can do something for the next generation to instill some views where humans give a shit about each other post birth. Im not optimistic though, at all.
Had to many lawyers from other states moving down here and taking 'er lawyuh jobs so had to put an end to it.
Would absolutely move to Vancouver, BC if COL wasn't out of control. Currently doing roughly 6 months in Seattle, 6 months abroad, but I see myself tiring of that after 2-3 years. Would love a place on the MX coast for winters. Shit in the US is not going to get better, so make plans now folks!
Jobs are good, love our neighborhood, great schools for my son, friends and family are here and the weather is great. Has nothing to do with politics.
Of course your white-washed bubble is dandy. Because you are white and well-off your life is going to be largely the same. Maybe look past your own fucking nose as to how, you know, less fortunate individuals are being treated? The GOP's utter lack of empathy for anything other than themselves and their immediate circle is mindblowing. This is the same stupid argument as, "Trump hasn't impacted my daily life, what's the big deal?" It's not only about you.
No kidding. I never said it was. The question was asked would you leave and I answered. There was not one political statement made or insinuation on anyone else. For your knowledge, most of my family are life long Democrats and a lot are not well off. 2-3 of my closest friends are Democrats as well. I don't care who you vote for. It's the person that matters. So, to say my inner circle is just one way is wrong and why I think it's not a good look to paint a broad brush. I have extreme empathy for people and I am a hell of lot nicer to people on here than most of you who throw personal attacks non-stop. When Florida was voting blue I wasn't leaving the state nor will I once it will at some point. As long as my family is happy and safe here I'm not leaving.
This should be the real question on this thread and/or warrants it’s own thread. I’m in North Carolina for a few weeks right now. Considering the move here from a blue state and looking at real estate here for this very reason - get involved in politics, donate decent size $$$ to local candidates and make a real impact instead of living in a blue state. Look what happened in GA with an evolving demographic. Helps my wife and I can work remotely. States like PA, N Carolina, Virginia and hopefully even Texas some day soon can tip like GA did with a net influx of well educated people (I’m an idiot myself, but speaking broadly of “educated” folks).
The question was: And your response was everybody in my circle is doing well, why would I leave? If you truly have extreme empathy you'd be repulsed at the current state of the party you support. You missing the point and citing your inner circle (your response) elicited my response. "As long as my family is happy and safe..." that's literally a lack of empathy you nitwit. Fuck how minorities are treated, fuck everything else, as long as I'm OK, why would I leave? I have no problem painting anybody that remotely supports the GOP with a broad brush. Fuck them all. Every. Single. One. Equating Florida turning blue with that is currently happening in your state is some galaxy-level brain bullshit.
I'm not moving based on politics. Only way I can see I move later in life is once both my wife's and my parents have passed away, and if our son moved to another state we might want to be closer to him especially if he had a family.
Your words not mine and you are reaching here pal. Taking some pretty big leaps but again I'm a jerk even though I can have a discussion and not get personal unlike yourself.
The only states I'd leave Colorado for are California or Washington. Both would require a significant salary bump, California for COL and Washington because the weather.
The SO and I have had this conversation a good bit because of her job and my interest (She works for the UNDP). Copenhagen is a realistic option and I've been looking for a reason to get out of Louisiana since COVID.
He's good because conservative policies won't hurt him or his family* and progressive policies are good for everyone, so politics don't matter. *unless any of them end up gay or raped pregnant or screwed by climate change or have major health issues
It takes a large amount of privilege to be able to move to another country The more privilege you have the less likely you need to move to another country
We're traveling to Geneva next Tuesday for a conference at the WHO. I made a joke that we should "get lost" and accidentally take a trip up there to see what the office space looks like in Copenhagen. In all seriousness, I have very little desire to raise a family in specifically Louisiana. Especially not Baton Rouge. The COVID/George Floyd/Jan 6th years made me face some hard truths about my home state and so called friends here. Not to mention, the UN has a pretty legit spouse relocation program.
I like that posters know it's untenable to flatly say "I don't give a fuck about marginalized people" but they also won't lie about caring about them either so they do this dance.
I'm headed that way for a wedding in Idaho Springs in late July (Staying in downtown Denver). Last summer was the most I had spent in Denver and the Golden area. I definitely get the appeal now. It would have to be the Portland area or the northeast coast (Astoria for example). Southern rural Oregon can get very greasy quickly from my experience.
-as long as my friends and family are OK, I won't move -so you don't care about those less privileged than you? hey man, don't get personal. I stayed in FL when the lefties were trying to, um, protect civil rights. Sure ain't leaving now!
Im up one the NW coast, around Astoria and it’s great. We have our fair share of chuds but they are they minority and it’s a beautiful area.
I’d consider moving to another country just out of a desire to experience living elsewhere. Politically I don’t know what it’d take to force me to seek out living elsewhere but it’s definitely not this. A lot of the countries people talk about moving to, like Portugal and Nordic countries, etc, have much stricter abortion laws than the Mississippi law that started this lawsuit.
It doesn't matter what started this lawsuit, the lawsuit was designed to gut Roe, not be what Republicans want. After this, Mississippi will ban at conception
SO's originally from Oregon and I have some HS friends that got out of the south and opened a joint in Salem (https://www.enjoynoblewave.com). I like Portland art and the food scene a lot. But the homeless problem is eye popping and nothing in the south outside of Houston or maybe Atlanta will prepare you for it. I felt right at home along the Oregon coast and could see myself living there if the option came up.
Dude I have a gay uncle, two gay cousins and two gay friends. No issues with gay marriage and I love them dearly. I'm also pro choice. I'm a man. Why should I have a say? Again, painting with a broad brush.
I’ve looked into it a little bit but it’s pretty disheartening that none of the places I would like to live (mostly Nordic countries) take US citizens unless you fill a critical job need.
You can not really care about people you're related to. Not giving a shit about others is what conservatives are good at.
