Idk I don't find the religious people around me ever actually care about abortion except when the subject comes up of who they'll vote for. They never devote any free time or money to the cause and know very little about it.
What you forget is that these same poor Republicans are the same fucking idiots that believe that it's the Democrats who are the elites.
iirc Catholics were the original anti-choice coalition and that's faded over time (historically Dems) Evangelicals were easy marks to make anti-choice post Roe because they were super racist (modern Republicans) so it didn't used to be super partisan stratified until the 80s and later
Right, just not single issue voters, and a lot of Catholics. most of that church going isn’t the evangelical, shame you into submission type. Those church-goers identify overwhelmingly with Republicans.
These are all anecdotes but I have a different experience and know people in church leadership at various churches. They’re the real deal Holyfield. And lots of people are single issue voters on it. Not that they don’t like the other Republican points but would never ever ever vote for a D because of abortion alone.
They made a deal with the devil, AKA Evangelical Christians. It's a very recent phenomenon, historically speaking.
Yeah I don’t know the history of how abortion became a partisan deal. Complete idiot on most things political. This one issue just always baffled me on why the vast majority of republicans decided to be pro life instead of pro choice. guess pandering to the religious base of the party.
All the evangelical moral majority guys coalesced around Reagan along with the fiscal people to form the current base. This was a late 70s to 1980 phenomenon.
They really built the bridge from Republicans to Evangelicals over feminism and the Equal Rights Amendment.
20-week old fetuses weigh about 0.5 pounds. people on this site regularly take shits larger than a 20-week old fetus. people as dumb as you shouldn't be allowed to live, let alone post.
My great uncle is a retired Catholic priest who has voted Democrat his entire life and marched with MLK. Catholics are actually roughly 50/50 on abortion
This is another reason why Reagan was probably the worst (bottom 5 easily) president we’ve ever had and an incredible piece of shit.
History lesson - it was an intentional effort by Republican operatives. They created propaganda over abortion when they could no longer count on overt racism to reliably win national elections. Prior to that it was not a partisan issue and most people didn't care much about it either way
True, but idk, maybe the conservative wing of the party wouldn't have so much power, if the DNC wouldn't constantly be giving them a gigantic platform. Exhibit A: forcing Joe Lieberman onto Gore's 2000 ticket. Jesus Christ, what a horrendous decision. Really, the last 25 years has been me screaming into the void about the Democratic Party's terrible messaging, poor decision making, and outright corruption with typically disastrous consequences.
It's pretty much the same story as Republicans on everything. Their policy positions have nothing to offer the vast majority of people. So they create moral panics to drive votes in their favor. It's the same playbook as everything we see from them today with CRT, etc. It just had substantial staying power
Same. It's easier to say you're a single issue voter than to admit you're actually completely on board with the racist shit the Republicans are doing.
Evangelicals, led by Falwell Sr, bailing on Jimmy Carter (a legit good man and Christian) to coalesce around Reagan (a fucking scum bag piece of shit) bc he gave them access and power is what led to this. falwell sr has some humdinger sermons that are racist and homophobic af
I read the opinion. It's bullshit. Bad law, bad analysis, bad results. Alito knows all of this but he does not care because he doesn't operate in good faith
Yeah I think it's a cover for why they vote the way they do that's socially acceptable. I don't think they actually believe in anything, as being Republicans in the first place seems to indicate
Oh no that fetus has a fatal birth defect and will die a horrible, agonizing death within the first hour of life. Thoughts and prayers fetus!
I don't know your experience being around organized evangelical religion is, but a large amount come to politics well after religion and have already decided on abortion and other (abhorrent) positions. I obviously won't defend their intentions but most of these people deeply believe on this one, even when they can't answer the wild inconsistency in their position.
I'm just excited that people are discovering their love for American jurisprudence. Where my Posner stans at?
I know this has been mentioned 100x, but folks really gotta stop calling their stance "pro-life." They enthusiastically support the death penalty, resist any form of gun control, love war, hate providing health care, and threw a goddamn tantrum over the smallest public health measures during the worst health crisis of our lifetimes. These pieces of shit aren't pro-life in the slightest. They're pro-birth by the strictest definition.
