This team has some very serious roster construction problems. Desperately need a single guy who works counts and gets on base outside of Ron.

Think the latter is a bigger issue than the former. When the ball was juiced, the Ks were more acceptable because the power numbers were there to justify it. How many 100+ EV balls have the boys hit that fell into gloves instead of the stands so far this year?

There are going to need to be adjustments made to account for the humidor effect.

Ronnie not changing for nobody fwiw

ATLANTA — The Braves played another game without Ronald Acuña Jr. on Sunday. This is something they may have to get used to. This shouldn’t be taken as some declaration that Acuña, who suffered a groin strain in his 10th game after returning from a torn knee ligament, is injury prone or reckless or would be better off if he down-shifts when he’s on the field. But players who run in the outfield and run the bases as he does are more susceptible to injury.

“I think the best thing I can do is to keep playing the way I play the game,” Acuña told The Athletic through a translator after Sunday’s game. “If I try to do anything different, it would just diminish the game and it would diminish the way I play.”

He’s probably right. But it’s understandable if the Braves are a little worried. Manager Brian Snitker acknowledged Sunday the team talked to Acuña at some point, “I think last year,” about the issue. But, Snitker added, “You gotta be careful because you don’t want him to get hurt because he’s being careful. You gotta let him go. You just hope we get him back there.”

When asked whether the team might have to get accustomed to Acuña getting banged up, Snitker said, “Yeah, because he plays with his hair on fire. He plays the thing hard. He’s done a really good job managing the (comeback from a knee injury), too. He’s gotten hot, he’s on base a lot, he wants to run, making plays in the outfield. Probably as he gets older and matures, he’ll probably need to scale back some of that a little bit because of the wear and tear on his body.

“At his age, he doesn’t know anything but full speed ahead. But God bless him.”

Asked if down-shifting goes against how he wants to play, Acuña said, “Yes.”

He has been on the injured list three times since his rookie year in 2018. It was a little surprising the Braves did not put him on the IL after the groin strain he suffered Tuesday against Boston because that tends to be at least a one-week injury. He is officially day to day and theoretically could play as early as Monday’s series opener in Milwaukee.

But when asked whether he still feels a pull when he runs hard, Acuña said, “I can’t tell you because I haven’t run hard, yet.”

Snitker also didn’t close the door completely to a 10-day IL move still happening.

“That’ll be the decision in the next couple of days if it looks like he’s gonna need more time,” he said.

To be clear, this is not a long-term injury. An MRI on Acuña’s groin Saturday was “clean,” Snitker said: “They didn’t find anything that worries them. He got treated again (Sunday), and we’ll see how he is (Monday).”

This is more about whether the Braves missing their best player will become a common occurrence. This season, the team is 5-5 with him in the lineup and 11-14 without him.

That slight dip contrasts what happened in 2021. When Acuña went down with a torn ACL in Miami, the overwhelming belief was that his loss would crush Atlanta’s postseason hopes. It didn’t. In fact, the team, bolstered by trade additions and great production from Freddie Freeman and others, went 47-32 without Acuña in the regular season. They then flattened the Brewers, Dodgers and Astrosalong the way to winning a World Series.

An 11-5 record in the playoffs meant they went 58-37 (.611) overall in 2022 without their All-Star leadoff hitter and outfielder.

He has missed four games in the past five days. He missed 27 games in 2018 when he suffered a sprained left knee and lower back contusion when he ran hard to leg out an infield single in Boston. His leg buckled, and he went airborne and landed on his back. At the time, most believed he had suffered a season-ending injury.

He went on the IL for a second time in 2019 when he was removed from a game in the fifth inning against Philadelphia because of inflammation in his wrist and missed nine games.

The torn ACL last season led to his longest absence — 73 games, as well as the entire postseason and the first 19 games this year — a span of 10 months. The injury occurred in the outfield after Acuña ran hard, leaped for a fly ball and then landed awkwardly in Miami. Basically, two of the three IL stints can be traced to his style of play. It’s uncertain exactly when he suffered the groin strain against the Red Sox.

He recently told The Athletic after his first minor-league game in Jacksonville, “I told my mom (early in his rehab), ‘I want to quit.’ I didn’t really mean it. It was just something I said. It was just the emotion in that moment. I had to fight with the pain every day. My body wasn’t used to that. I wasn’t used to that. It was the worst thing in my entire life.”

The groin strain is likely a minor setback. The Braves are hopeful it doesn’t serve as career foreshadowing.

Acuña said Sunday, “I feel good today, but let’s see how I feel tomorrow.” They may have to get used to this.
