can i get a riff guy's unvarnished opinion of the riff that starts at 2:45 here? hopefully you still have a face after listening
Listening from beginning -- they definitely come out swinging. This shit is "tight" in a precision way
Heavy Mental dude's pick hand is just insane. That's my favorite part of the riff; the machine gun "djent djent." (Just learned that word.) It also brings a nice melody to a track that's pretty sludgy before. And damn it builds from there. This actually gets sort of ear pleasing towards the end
Now I'm watching a guitar play through video of that song. Some of the comments: "my wrists hurt just by watching this goddamn" "How the fuck do you guys not have carpal tunnel"
Do these black metal bands play sober? Don't see any way you could play with that precision intoxicated. Also think you have to be pretty fully hydrated not to cramp. Do they treat it like athletics?
I’ve listened to metal for at least 2 decades and I can say with high confidence that it might be my favorite riff across the entire genre.
lol at these comments TC thanks for indulging me. I have very little technical music knowledge, so reading a breakdown like this is cool.
TC is right, it’s all picking hand. Honestly, it’s not crazy fast or technical IMO. If you told me he was downstroking the entire thing yeah that would be nuts but he’s tremolo picking it. Pretty standard for black metal. Dope riff tho
more awesome melodic black metal with First Nation themes (a trend for sure now) from Canada, has members of Wormwitch.
this is just…wow I’m not sure anything will top this album for me this year. It’s basically perfect. Vital Spirit - Still as the Night, Cold as the Wind
curious, where did carcass peak in their career for you? ditto for morbid angel symphonies is my fav carcass, love when they still have a grindier sound. domination is probably my favorite angel. i like their more experimental d -> g output before they went dubstep
so the recent Morbid Angel mentions got me thinking that everyone probably has a handful of bands that appear universally beloved but just don't do it for you. Morbid Angel is definitely one for me. Eyehategod, Motorhead, Celtic Frost are a few others that come to mind. gave a solid effort, but they just didn't 'click' for me. you guys have any bands like that?
My favorite Carcass album will always be Necroticism. Favorite Morbid Angel is either Altars or Blessed are the Sick. Edit: 2nd favorite Carcass album is Symphonies
Another thing that I feel makes a difference is I was a teenager (barrely) when Altars and Blessed came out. Bands you fall in love with as a youngster you tend to stick with longer. (At least it's true for me). SO bands like Entombed, Carcass, Morbid Angel and even Anathema I have stuck with even though the quality of output has dropped. Obituary is another one for me.
Death is the band that sticks out for me. Also Tool, and this new band Wilderun I just don't get. Maybe it's over my head idk. Oh and Opeth. Just never got into it and Akerfeldt is a pretentious douche (or so I've heard)
For death metal, Obituary and Deicide are both in the they’re fine but I’m not a huge fan category for me. Just never clicked. Maybe they will some day. Dream Theater is a big one. Mostly because of James LaBrie
it’s just…bad? I’ve even seen them live, which usually endears me to a band, but even after that i don’t get it.
Is there better sounding live death metal footage than Bloodbath live at Wacken in 2005? the HM2 guitars sound delicious, and Akerfeldt is a fucking monster. i think it’s the best live death vox from him I’ve ever heard, even better than older Opeth these people seem to have no idea what they are witnessing
There's nothing to get, the weirdos that worship this band are the same ones that think Sleep 'Jerusalem' is a masterpiece.
certified weirdo here. also, no one thinks jerusalem is the masterpiece. that’s dopesmoker in its full, 63 minute song glory
jerusalem is what you get when the label decides making the record a single song over an hour long is a bad idea (they were wrong)
for the record: i like (most) crust I’ve heard, especially the bm influenced kind, see: Martydod i love Dopesmoker and Dopethrone But I don’t like EHG. Honestly I don’t see the relationship between those things and the music of EHG.
None of you could have saved me? I'm over in the MMA thread posting horrible metal takes unknowingly. Christ. Morbid Angel peaked with Covenant. Domination was their downfall. Everyone knows Necro, Heartwork, Swansong is the threepeat of all threepeats.
It's a fanbase thing, you're the first I've come across that likes one but not the other. Granted this study I've conducted over the last 20 years totals around a dozen people.
I honestly liked EHG and listen to Take as Needed for Pain and In the Name of Suffering pretty regularly. Everything after that is just boring (to me)
it’s an acquired taste, but they are so unique. nothing else like them in heavy music. My advice would be to start with The Dusk In Us and work backwards. Axe To Fall is my favorite album,
Flip the script: Name 3 bands you love that others don't get (besides pretty much all of metal lol) 1. Brujeria (Matando Gueros is one of my all-time faves) 2. Mayhem (DMDS and Grand Declaration of War) 3. Godflesh (Streetcleaner)
