That’s a good point but I don’t think that’s what we are talking about here, I don’t want nd to push kids away and révoqué scholarships but some will just walk away naturally if you start to recruit at a very high level. They want to play

Where would he land on our board? If he’s priority 4-5 for us Cincy makes a lot of sense.

Also if his dad is only planning on being here for a couple of years max before he gets an OC job, it doesn’t make a whole lot sense to just keep following him.

    Loy's gut check on defense

Irish Illustrated and 247Sports have put together this piece in the past and figured it was about time to share the latest, from a big picture perspective, on the Notre Dame targets from the class of 2023. Some answers will be lengthy, while some will be short and to the point. Some will revolve around a commitment and where they may end up, while others will revolve around whether or not they will visit. Others may involve whether or not they will stay on the board much more.

Let’s look at the defensive side of the ball.

Five-star defensive end Nyckoles Harbor — My gut feeling is that it’s time to remove him from the Top Target board. Notre Dame took some swings and tried to make a move, but a while back he was asked for schools pushing the hardest and he ran off 10 names and never mentioned Notre Dame. That stuck with me. If you’re truly interested in a program, you don’t forget to mention them. This kid is a freak and he’s going to make one program (and track program) very happy.

Four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore — My gut feeling is that he completes Notre Dame’s tremendous defensive line class. My Crystal Ball pick is on the Fighting Irish and I see Al Washington, Marcus Freeman and Al Golden getting this done.

Four-star defensive end Derion Gullette — My gut feeling is that he makes his way to Notre Dame for an official visit at some point. The Irish would have loved to get him in town for an unofficial to get an extra shot, but they will take what they can get. The staff is pushing really hard here and absolutely loves this kid, so they are trying their best to pull off the perceived upset for a young man being recruited hard by the likes of Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and others.

Five-star linebacker Samuel M’Pemba — My gut feeling is that Notre Dame makes another big move during his official visit to campus in June. I’m not ready to predict ND as his landing spot, but the Irish absolutely have a shot. With this staff, anything is possible.

Four-star linebacker Troy Bowles — My gut feeling is that, like with Harbor, it’s time to remove Bowles from the Top Target board. They just haven’t been able to gain much traction here and I would be surprised if he took an official visit to Notre Dame.

Four-star linebacker Jaiden Ausberry — My gut feeling is that people don’t realize how big of a player Notre Dame is at this time. Ausberry has been to LSU a bunch over the past few months and he’s much more likely to land with the Tigers than his brother was last cycle, but Notre Dame has had plenty of great conversations with him and previous visits have gone extremely well. They need to make a huge move when he steps on campus June 10, which is possible with this staff. In talking with sources from both programs, each clearly has reasons for optimism. Official visits will play a factor down the stretch.

Four-star cornerback Caleb Presley — My gut feeling is that things are trending away from Notre Dame here. I’m not ruling the Irish out yet, but it just seems as though others are in better position. An official visit could change a lot of things, but the latest intel suggests he’ll likely land somewhere out west when all is said and done and he won’t return to South Bend for a trip.

Four-star cornerback Christian Gray — My gut feeling is that he picks Notre Dame come July 4. However, this one is surely not over. LSU is a big, big player here and they have the best relationship of all the coaches with Robert Steeples. They have known each other for years and he’s Gray’s mentor. That plays a big role. In fact, I don’t believe he’d be considering LSU as much if Steeples wasn’t on staff. That said, it’s a battle, a close one, and these last official visits will play a key role. Mike Mickens needs this one for the Irish.

Four-star cornerback Micah Bell — My gut feeling is that he ends up Irish when he makes a decision. He will be at Notre Dame in June, the staff has connected well with him and I think Mike Mickens lands a good one if all goes well on his trip.

Four-star cornerback Micah Tease — My gut feeling is that if Notre Dame lays out a plan for him to take a shot at receiver upon arrival in college, it will give them the best shot at landing his commitment. Notre Dame itself offers everything he is looking for in a school. I’m told he is interested in playing receiver at the next level, but Notre Dame is one place he’s comfortable going and playing cornerback. But again, it’s about doing all you can to land a kid, so with a need for receivers and ones that have a ton of speed, it just makes sense to try and land Tease and give him that shot on offense, at least at first.

Four-star cornerback Jasiah Wagoner — My gut feeling is that this recruitment comes down to Notre Dame vs. Texas. Both are major players here and official visits will be the deciding factor. Notre Dame was late to the party, but all dialogue between both sides has been strong. The Irish staff has plenty of optimism and he couldn’t be a better fit.

Four-star cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt — My gut feeling is that if he de-commits from Texas Tech, he’ll be welcomed to take an official visit to Notre Dame. Until then, they will focus their attention elsewhere. They don’t want to host committed guys on their campus, just like they don’t want their committed guys taking official visits elsewhere. When he was informed of this, I’m told it was well-received, so we’ll see how things play out.

Five-star safety Caleb Downs — My gut feeling is that he ends up at Alabama or Georgia. That is probably me just playing it safety. However, anyone that thinks Notre Dame isn’t a real player here is sadly mistaken. They have done so well here and Chris O'Leary is one of many on this staff that has Downs feeling great about the Fighting Irish. This kid is extremely talented. What a pull this would be.

Four-star safety Jyaire Hill — My gut feeling is that he’ll end up elsewhere. As of today, Notre Dame has higher targets on the board. They like him a good bit and he impressed at camp last year, but they seem to be all in on Caleb Downs, to go along with their commits in Peyton Bowen and Adon Shuler. But if things go south with Downs or it's not going to work out, keep an eye on Hill.

    1COMMENTS
Four-star safety Amare Snowden — My gut feeling is that what I wrote for Hill will fit for Snowden. Barring a change, this is how I see this playing out. But again, if things go south with Downs or it's not going to work out, keep an eye on Snowden as well.

As we've stated from the beginning, ND needed to hit a home run on the visit to land _______. By all indications from sources both within the program and in _____'s camp they did exactly that. Is that enough to place a crystal ball prediction for ND? I'm not sure I'm there yet, but I think there is growing confidence within the Gug.

He must have that in a sticky note on his desktop ready to copy/paste into the message board.

D3 hiring a hacker from some Chan site (where he discusses gun holsters, not the other stuff) to steal Tom Loy’s Microsoft quick parts doesn’t sound that unlikely to me.

It’d be ND message boards version of Jimbo v Saban. This is the kind of off-season material we all pay for.
