Seeing those stats the Yankees are posting makes me realize how uneduacted I've been on just how bad gun violence is. Its even worse than I thought. And we (I) need to start calling out rap for the bullshit culture that promotes violence and gun violence.
Just have to hope that organizations, businesses, and large amounts of general citizens who are fed up will eventually result in change. It’s going to be a long slog, but man we’ve got to try.
the good* thing about having one every week or so is it doesn’t give us enough time to move on. Bad news is it’s always “not the time to talk” *not actually good
It was timed to commemorate the anniversary of George Floyd's murder and has nothing to do with Uvalde, which should be quite obvious by the content of the reforms.
you told someone just a week or two ago to, "suck their dick" when a poster came to this board talking about them being sexually harassed
When the republicans get their way and half measures to beef up security and schools are put in place over the next few years and these people turn to like little league games, is it just going to be open warfare with 18 dads with CHLs vs body armored mass shooters every few weeks?
Rap is very popular in other countries and they don't have the issue we have. Rap music isn't the problem.
Wife is currently looking into spending her once every 7 years hiatus as a prof to do Navy Seal training Apologies. Have to let out the rage somewhere in some form every few hours
No, Im not saying its the problem but its an additional problem contributing to a bigger problem. We have a bad problem regarding gun culture from several different aspects of American society. Within those aspects, we have factors adding to certain beliefs of young people and in some aspects people of all ages. This maybe raps version of ignoring critical theroy and simply saying oppression is why we have a gang and murder problem in inner cities. Theres gangs in other Countries just like there are mental health issues. And I shouldnt have to put this disclaimer but I love rap and growing up on the west coast I loved gangster rap. But lyrics proclaiming culture have an impact simliar to Rogan or fox news questioning the pandemic and the vaccines and on and on.
The music is just a symptom, not the disease. They rap about their life. They are just reporters. If their life didn't consist of a huge gun issue, they wouldn't rap about it. It's not the music. It's not the video games. It's the fact we have hundreds of millions of guns in this country.
I think you're reaching to make a comparison that isn't there. Comparing a disinformation/propaganda machine to a form of art talking about their real life experiences isn't it.
Also, if you're going to go after rap music, you going to go after Hollywood? Cable networks? Historical authors?
No, I cant ignore influence and the domino affect. There is no drill rap without gangster rap. And drill music is bragging about taking out ops. You can tell the story without promoting the violence which sometimes comes off as glory.
Im always extremely hesitant to pin blame for shootings on any sort of media but drill might be an exception. A truly alarming amount of drill artists get killed every year. Then again, most of them are also actual gangsters.
Thats like saying, do you want addicts to stop doing drugs? Then get rid of the drugs without asking why are they doing the drugs and how did they get hooked. Because yes you can get rid of the drugs and guns but whats the next form of addiction and violence?
No disagreement re: drill rap. I still disagree with your overall statement re: rap and this situation.
And you're trying to blame a form of art, where most of them are regurgitating real life experiences, for causing mass violence. Come on man.... If you're going to do this, blame Hollywood/TV for glorifying war/police.
I think the confusion might be you guys thinking Im saying this shooting may have been because of rap. No I have no idea what led to what this asshole did. Im trying to say that the Yankees posted a stat saying every three hous a black man gets killed by a gun in this Country. Which then led me to try and talk about rap as another aspect of gun culture that leafs to gun violence in this Country.
Violent rap lyrics and violent video games are popular in other countries. What makes America different is the guns. That’s it. You don’t need to overthink it. Fewer guns = fewer gun deaths.
The ONLY way to get an addict to stop doing drugs is to take away the drugs. You cannot treat the underlying issue until they are clean. And the only way they get clean is to remove their access to drugs. Signed, An addict
SIAP posted - I just now saw the interview today: Highlights: Rep Tony Gonalez (R) Texas that they had on CNN this week was lauding how the police officers managed to "corner" the assailant into one room (while kids were getting massacred) - and touted how well multiple agencies worked together to address the threat. Also was very clear to continually mention how the officers saved lives and that the officer that engaged him was "injured" Adamantly mentions mental health as often as possible.
We ban posters for telling a fireman they hope they burn but we just look the other way telling someone who deals with depression to kill themselves. That's fucked up
Daniel Ocean i want you alive and striving brother. Who else is going to knock off Casinos in Nevada? John
The rap music my students listen to is vile and crass beyond the scope of anything I could have imagined when we grew up, and I definitely wish they’d listen to something else, but I 100% agree with dbl and the others that it’s just one of the symptoms of the life they see around them. Most are poor and generally powerless to change their circumstances in a meaningful and immediate way, and what they’ve been taught by the culture they live in is that having a gun does that. I’ve only been teaching at this school for four years and have already run out of fingers of kids I taught who got shot in some stupid strutting cockfight. The fact that I have multiple kids, 85% of whom are on free and reduced lunch and also 11-12, can get access to guns to post pics on Instagram or Snap of themselves holding them is the real problem.
I love the idea that we have so many terrible people in this country but we don't do a single thing to stop them from getting death machines
