Finally got to go see it. Was waiting until I could go to a Dolby theater. One of the best theater experiences I've had.

A really great movie, just perfectly executed all around. I loved the relative lack of CGI feels like that never happens in any action flick anymore

I didn't see it with bells and whistles. I might try to.

They did a good job making the enemy totally irrelevant.

The dialogue and interpersonal stuff was of course wildly cheesy for the most part.

The training sequences and the mission itself were mostly fun to watch.
as soon as they were over water I knew there would be some other altercation and that someone else would bail them out

The only part that made me have any emotional response was when Mav showed up in his dress whites, pretty much saying goodbye as it seemed like he was resigned to die for the mission. I don’t understand anyone itt getting emotional over a 30+ year old Rooster lashing out like a goddamn child at Maverick over his dads death though.

Cruise beating the course was the best flight scene of the movie for me. That and the inversion over the first mountain in the mission.

The part where they come out of the valley and the SAM sites are all over them was intense.

So did you actually think that movie was a D grade or are you just trying to be contrarian? Cuz I mean cmon

I don't want this to be about this particular film.

We gotta stop treating RT percentages like we've grown to imo.

It's a good movie but I really don't care all that much about what % I might be in according to RT.

6.5/10 is not a D grade to me. When I say 6.5...it's better than average. If I take every movie I've ever watched and grade them....the one movie that lands in the middle would be a 5. Everything above 5 is good, below is bad. Also, if being a contrarian means that I don't think it's as good as the original then yes, I guess I'll be the contrarian.

I put more weight in RT scores of normal people than I do critics reviews as to whether or not I’m going to enjoy a movie.

    My favorite Top Gun story.

In the (excellent) movie Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, Val Kilmer played an exuberantly gay character.

While doing press for that movie, he was asked if he'd ever played a gay character before.

He answered, "You mean beside Top Gun"?

Interesting take considering how much the 2nd one replayed the exact same concepts in many scenes.... especially in the first half of the movie. They're both very good movies.

to state the very obvious RT is a gauge of thumbs up or thumbs down

99% means almost everyone thought it was worth watching but a 6.5/10 is still probably a net positive and would be in that 99%

We watched top gun tonight. Still love the movie, but man #2 is so superior in every single way.

edit: wow totally missed the conversation from earlier today so this was not in response to anything at all. That said, I do not understand how someone could like #1 more than #2. That’s wild as hell to me.

I saw Jurassic World tonight and it’s not that great, but also knew that I still wanted to see it in a theater at some point despite the subpar reviews.

And I must admit that there was a point during it that I thought about going to watch Maverick again, although I’ve already seen it 2.5 times (I caught the second half in IMAX again after seeing another movie on Sunday afternoon) and have already told a friend I’d see it again with her next week.

Probably because of nostalgia and the fact I’ve seen it so many times, but I’m firmly on the #1 is easily superior to #2 side.

I like both the same. I'm just glad the sequel exceeded my expectations because 99% of the time it doesn't. Joins the ranks of Godfather 2, Austin Powers 2 and Beverly Hills Cop 2.
