the new Origin album is fucking tight. a nice continuation of their sound from the last few albums. glad they’re still doing their thing

Got tickets for Mastodon and Ghost for Labor Day weekend. I’ve actively avoided Ghost for like 6-7 years. I listened to a few albums and watched some YouTube over the weekend. Can’t quite figure out if any of it’s serious.

I mostly like the music and theatrics though.

I thought Mastodon’s new album was underwhelming. It didn’t quite suck shit, but it is like 60 minutes of meh. The first ~30 minutes are good.

it had some good moments but agree, was wayyyyy to long.

    i can’t think of a double album that’s justified it’s length.

the only ones that come to mind are definitely not metal.

fwiw after all of the tech issues, mastodon still ripped. their playing is well worth seeing in person.

still, no one in that band can sing, so that's gonna be a thing.

I’ve seen Mastodon a few times. I don’t think the music translates well live, but they are probably my favorite active band and it’s never a bad time.

I know so little about Ghost that I was shocked to see Mastodon as the opener and not vice versa. The show is in Atlanta (area) so I’m hoping for some fireworks.

Mastodon is opening for Ghost in North America this summer. Like I said, I was shocked/confused.

Then I learned that Ghost is very popular.

Missed it because I've come down with covid or some sort of cold. Going to a show tomorrow though so if anyone is in Portland and doesn't want to get sick stay the fuck home.

I listened to IMPERA this morning for the first time. It sounds like a broadway soundtrack compared to the other records. I could see my wife listening to this while running (after Hamilton is done).

Sepultura tonight killed it. Hard not to kill it when you're playing nothing but tracks from Arise and Beneath The Remains.

Maybe I'll listen to that after I'm done with The Spirit. Hadn't heard of The Spirit before today, this shit is right up my ally for black/death mix. Guess the members have spent time in Dethroned, Melechesh and Agathodaimon.

Sacred Bones has a cool lineup. mostly non-metal.

i got a nice Molchat Dolma release from them a while back.

Molchat Doma is good. There’s a lot of great post punk/new wave stuff going on right now but I think my favorite contemporary post punk album came out on SB — VÅR. Sacred Bones is definitely solid with their reissues/re-releases. Not sure if anyone cares but if you’re interested in record labels that sort of specialize in releasing/reissuing hard to find old experimental/post punk/etc music (and some new) I would suggest checking out Soundway Records, We Release What the Fuck We Want Records, Minimal Wave Records, Dais Records, Mental Groove Records, Camisole Records, Sub Rosa…

unsurprisingly they have a pretty eclectic discography but it mostly focuses on old unreleased film soundtracks (particularly old horror and sci-fi films), Japanese jazz/soundscapes/experimentalism, French and German jazz/big band/crooner works, and geographically likewise old-school synth/electronic experimentalism. There’s some good shit on there

Reminds me of ABRUPTUM with psyche/industrial elements

    Punk rock tinged black thrash

    Some solid grind/power violence

    War synth!! Or something

also do you guys have the NIGHT FLIGHT app? I didn’t hear about it til recently

White Ward’s False Light is great if y’all haven’t checked it out. Black metal with a strong jazz influence, but not really like Imperial Triumphant. More like an old noir film.

I tried to get into this band because the concept sounds so cool, but I wasn’t feeling it.

the black metal parts are great, but the jazz parts sound jarring to me.

It’s clear that they are super talented and I get why people would really dig this. It’s innovative.

not an Imperial Triumphant fan either, maybe that’s related.

Imperial Triumphant is also one of those bands that seems to be polarizing.

really wanted to like IT because they are local to me and I’ve seen them live many times, but that ultra dissonant, clangy industrial weirdness is not my thing at all.
