Kind of an etiquette question. My 5 year old loves all things golf and in the past would tag along and ride with me when I play. Typically I'd throw his putter in my bag and let him putt on the greens if the course wasnt busy, which was most of the time since I'm the type that tees off as early as possible. I had surgery on my leg and foot in March and am now recovered enough that I can start playing. He's starting to get the itch to want to try out his irons and woods. I've got a 6:30 A.M. tee time for Saturday and he wants to play go with me.

What age do I actually start paying for him to play?

He in no way would be able to play the whole round as he's 5 and I always let people play through and on the rare occasions there are other people, I always let them play through. All of the times I've been out in the past, the pro shop guy is just happy to see a little kid out there and get a kick out of it. Thoughts on the situation?

I can’t answer your question but it sounds like you’re handling it the right way. Aside from a 630am tee time that’s asinine

Most public courses have a junior rate. If not, pay for him to play 9 holes

Wouldn’t worry about paying for his round till he’s closer to being if not a teenager.

Ha, I'm an early riser. I like to get my round in and still have all day to do other stuff. Typically I can play 18 and be done by 9 if I tee off at 6:30.

When my youngest starting playing most courses wouldn't let him pay until he could complete 9 holes. His golf coach told me to just tee him up about 100-150 yard from the hole in the fairway and let him play as many holes as he wanted. As long as you let people play through I wouldn't worry about making a super early team time. It also teaches him course etiquette. He is 12 now so they usually charge me the Jr rate for 9 holes and tell him to play as many as he wants.

Depends on his attention span. My youngest started around 8 because he couldn’t sit still or pay attention. We are lucky we have a guy here that does lessons and has 13 kids so he can handle anything a child can throw at him. He started off doing 30 mins and now he does an hour.

Sounds like your son is ready to go whenever, especially something low key. My son started doing kids group lessons at 7, and there were younger kids in the class. A neighbor's kid started at 6 and definitely got something out of them.

    Re:kids

my son is almost 6 but he’s been tagging along with me every few rounds for 3 years. He likes putting, eating hotdogs and snacks and then I usually let him play on my phone for most of my round. I usually take him if I know the course is empty and I can burn through a round quickly. He begs to go all the time. Mainly for the snacks and screen time.

I’ve got a mat and net in my garage and he likes to hit into it. It’s a complete mess and I try to coach him as little as possible because he’s very independent. I’ve been able to teach him some setup stuff and will put some objects in his way to keep his path from being over the top. I will pick the brain of the guy I get lessons from on how to handle him coaching wise but I think he’s probably 2 years away from any serious coaching. He’s going to do some group lessons/camp this summer but I expect him to get little out of it other than just being around the game and etiquette

We just finished a month of group golf classes with my 5 year old. It wasn't anything groundbreaking for him but he enjoyed going up there once a week and his swing seems to have improved. He's no mini Rory but he can at least connect on the ball when it's teed up. Most importantly, he likes going up there more and knows a lot of the folks that work up there. I just want to be able to take him with me to play 9 and let him get some swings in. He's close.

Courses around here let kids play free with a paying adult. Also I 2nd the lessons now if he's that interested. I believe I went to my first group lesson with I was around that age, maybe a year or 2 older. Also agree on the 100-150yd tee. It will help bring him confidence and not get bored with just putting (although we all know that's the most important).

He seems to be the perfect age to do as other people said of teeing off 100 yards out. However, 6:30 am on a Saturday is asking to get your playing privileges revoked. Kids learning to play the game is a “when the course is empty” situation. Not only for the sake of the people around you, but so you and your kid actually enjoy it and aren’t worried about playing too slow and being in the way.

Anyone revoking someone's playing privileges because they are trying to teach a child the game should be removed from the board/clubhouse. That's a great way to lose future members and killing any potential a kid may have. As long as the adult is letting others play though, it should never be an issue (which also teaches the kid how to handle people playing faster than you).

Just had my best 9 ever. Started eagle bogey birdie. Zero three puts. Had a double and finished 38. That was a lot of fun.

    Shot 102 on Friday.

beat my dad by 10 strokes today. first time playing in a year. Inconsistent, but I hit a few really nice shots .... we won't talk about the bad ones. There were no yardage markers out there so I couldn't really get a feel for distances. I hit a great drive on a big dog leg right par 4. Creek runs in front of the green. I look about 100 out, hit it well, but it was coming up short. Right into the creek, but hit a massive rock and bounced onto the green. Think my dad wanted to chuck my wedge after that one.

Anyone using the Cobra Agera putter? Recently got fitted and I rolled it so well. Waiting for it to arrive. Switching from an old Scotty blade to a massive mallet is quite the change for me.

Loved my old ping pal blade that I had since I was like 10, but about 10 years ago I couldn’t line it up, get speed correct or anything. Switched to an odessey #9 and putting is back. I didn’t like any of the bigger mallets at the time.
