City on Fire - First in a new trilogy by Winslow. About mob war between the Irish and Italians in 80's Rhode Island. Very good. Winslow is a great writer in this genre. He announced this trilogy will be his last as he's retiring from writing to focus on political campaigns. I am saddened by this because he writes great books, but makes extremely cringy #resist stuff on twitter.

Jade Setter of Janloon - Novella set in the Green Bone Saga. I fantasy trilogy I absolutely loved and wished you fucks would read it.

Star Wars Brotherhood - Really good SW book about Obi-wan and Anakin. :comicbookguy::comicbookguy:

    22. The Lincoln Highway - Amor Towles

    23. Heroes (Mythos Vol. II) - Stephen Fry (9/10)

A compilation and retelling of some of the greatest stories in history. Vol. I focused on the gods - this one on men. Heracles, Theseus, Jason, etc. Like Vol. I, it is excellent if you like the Greek myths.

    24. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro (7/10)

This gets a 7 because I love Ishiguro’s writing style, but the story itself was not my favorite. It takes place in England primarily following three “donors” from childhood through their “completion.” Donors are clones created for the sole purpose of having their organs harvested for use in humans. It’s pretty fucked up. The ultimate question he seems to be exploring is whether these donors have souls, a theme he revisits to a certain extent in Klara and the Sun.

23- The Book of Evidence - John Banville (6.5/10)
    24- A Long Long Way – Sebastian Barry (10/10)
    25- Harvest – Jim Crace (5.5/10)
    26- Foe – J.M. Coetzee (3/10)
27- A Visit from the Goon Squad – Jennifer Egan (10/10)
    28- Waiting for the Barbarians – J.M. Coetzee (6/10)
    29- Postcards – Annie Proulx (10/10)
30- Close Range: Wyoming Stories – Annie Proulx (9.5/10)

35- The Candy House – Jennifer Egan (9/10)
36- The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty – Sebastian Barry (9.5/10)

37- Days Without End – Sebastian Barry (10/10)
Winner of the 2016 Costa Book Award. A young Irish boy flees his homeland during the Great Famine and ends up fighting for the Union in the Indian and Civil Wars. It’s unsparing in its portrayal of America and the horrors carried out by white European immigrants. A barrage of brutal action scenes mixed with elegant looks at nature, friendship, love, identity, etc. Barry is officially a top-tier writer for my tastes

    38- A Summons to Memphis – Peter Taylor (5/10)
Winner of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize, it’s told from the perspective of a man who is called back to Memphis from New York to intervene in a family affair. It’s certainly well written but I didn’t enjoy the story. It was almost entirely focused on old southern conventions and people being shocked when they’re broken

39- All That Is – James Salter (9/10)
A man returns to New York after serving in WWII and finds success in the publishing world but what he most desires proves difficult to secure. Salter was about as talented a writer as America has seen. Everything in this bittersweet novel is so concise and sharp you feel like you are along for the ride with the characters in NYC, Paris, the Pacific, etc.

    40- Accordion Crimes – Annie Proulx (6.5/10)
Shortlisted for the 1997 Women’s Prize for Fiction, it’s a very dense account of a long line of tragic figures, many of whom are immigrants in search of the American dream. A green accordion made in Sicily is the only constant presence besides suffering as Proulx moves from chapter to chapter. Very gothic. But also way too much focus on accordions, the various types/sounds and polka/traditional French music. Had to grind through this one even if it is by a stellar author

The greatest story ever told as retold by an incredible storyteller. Achilles, Odysseus, Hector, Ajax, Agamemnon, Diomedes - true legends. As with the others in the series, I recommend the audiobook if you are interested. I’m hoping he does The Odyssey next although this is billed as Book 3 of 3.

    26. The Island - Adrian McKinty (8.5/10)
    27. Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan - Jake Adlestien (6.5/10)

This group's them is "I loved the TV show, gonna read the book"

We Own This City - About a corrupt police task force. Everything wrong w policing in our country. The TV show did such a great job. Couldnt have been a documentary. Didnt learn too much new. Just some minor details.

The Island - Im not a huge Thriller genre. Been chasing that Gone Girl rush for 10 years now. McKinty is as close as it gets. About a family vacation to Australia where they get stuck on an island off the coast. Not great literature or anything but a great entertaining beach read type. Would have read it in 1 or 2 sittings if I didnt have Memorial Weekend things to do.

Tokyo Vice - Again, loved the TV show and wanted to read the book. It's about a young American that gets a job with a huge Japanese Newspaper. He struggles being a foriegner, but loves the country, overcomes those hurdles, becomes a great reporter. He eventually starts covering the Yakuza, which puts his life in peril at times. It's a memoir and it has all the problems I struggle with when reading memoirs. Everyone is the hero of their own story. Full of self aggrandizement while trying to layer a veneer of humility ect. Never sure what is BS or what is more accurate. The show is very entertaining. The book - Meh.

39- All That Is – James Salter (9/10)
    40- Accordion Crimes – Annie Proulx (6.5/10)

    41- Some Luck – Jane Smiley (7.5/10)
The first installment in a trilogy, it’s a sweeping multigenerational account of an Iowa farm family set against the backdrop of America from 1920 into the 1950s. Each chapter takes you through a year in the family’s development and details farm life as major changes unfold on a larger level

42- Beautiful World, Where Are You – Sally Rooney (10/10)
The best young writer in the world provides an intimate look at two young women trying to overcome their reservations about living in a capitalistic and increasingly fucked up world while dealing with depression, social anxiety and the strains of relationships. Rooney is the closest thing to Salter we’ll get. Super concise and direct prose with dialogue liable to make you cringe, cry or laugh

43- Look At Me – Jennifer Egan (9/10)
A finalist for the 2001 National Book Award (The Corrections won), it’s a sprawling story revolving around a washed up model obsessed with reacquiring fame and a handful of unique individuals that factor into her life and generally engage in destructive behavior. Really prescient cultural commentary because it calls out the whole social media/influencer movement way before it went mainstream. Also, much of it takes place in NYC and it was completed in January 2001. Yet one of the main characters is a terrorist who roams Manhattan. So you are tempted to view his scenes through the context of 9/11, but Egan said it should remain an artifact of a more innocent time

    29. The Cartographers - Peng Shepard (7/10)
    30. Dead Silence - SA Barnes (7/10)

Normal People - First Rooney novel. Knew she got a lot of buzz in book circles, but decided to read based on TMBers reviews. Im torn. First - I hate the writing style. kind of difficult to read and get into. Long paragraphs, with no page breaks. Lots of dialogue but no quotes. Youre not really sure if it's internal thoughts or the character is actually saying it until you get a 'he said' or 'she said' randomly. However, I liked the story. Which is weird. Its almost like a romance novel (i think). Not really a genre Id have much interest in. However the there was a lot of that relationship I could sympathize and identify with. There's also a lot of great social commentary. Hard book to rate because I liked it but was deeply frustrated with it - and not really in a good way. I will probably read more Rooney

Cartographers - Novel about a young cartographer who gets a call that her father has died. She and her dad had a professional and personal falling out and he basically ruined her career. She goes on the hunt to figure out what behind his death. Pretty good action/thriller. Pretty predictable and paint by numbers. Liked it. Didnt love it. Not sure Id really recommend it.

Dead Silence - Sci-fi Horror. Love sci-fi meh on horror. This was a little more in the horror realm. This book was a roller coaster for me. Started off intrigued, then felt like I was going to hate it. Then it took a cool turn towards the end to salvage it into a "decent read"

I was traveling a lot recently so had to use my kindle, and my library doesn’t have kindle books, so I rely on bargain non-fiction books from the Kindle store for $0.99. Hence the non-fiction kick from #7-#9. The next couple months will have more fiction vibes, especially if the rainy weather finally goes away and I can read in the park in the sun.

43- Look At Me – Jennifer Egan (9/10)

44- Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories II – Annie Proulx (7.5/10)
A collection of short stories set in Wyoming. As one expects from Proulx, a steady stream of dark and tragic events occur. But there’s no standout like with Close Range and Brokeback Mountain. Just a bunch of solid stories driving home the fact that WYO is as harsh as it is beautiful

    45- Charming Billy – Alice McDermott (5.5/10)
Winner of the 1998 National Book Award, it revolves around an Irish Catholic man from NYC who drinks himself to death. It details the grief/love his friends and family experience in the years leading up to the inevitable and in the aftermath of his passing. It is exceptionally well written and there are touching scenes about family/friendship throughout, but there is also a heavy focus on boring old-fashioned traditions and religion

46- Redhead By the Side of the Road – Anne Tyler (5/10)
A story about an introverted Baltimore computer repairman who is very particular and ends up slipping into a funk because of unexpected events that suddenly occur. It’s nothing special but would probably make a fine beach read because it’s short and has tons of dialogue. Would recommend Tyler to people with women in their lives who hail from the Baltimore area

47- Sing, Unburied, Sing – Jesmyn Ward (10/10)
Winner of the 2017 National Book Award, it won a few other awards and was a finalist for most major literary prizes in existence. Set in the same fictional MS town as Salvage the Bones, it is a family saga told from the perspective of three characters with the majority through the eyes of a young bi-racial boy and his mother. Grief, family and racism are the main themes. It’s electric and searing, a must-read book for avid American readers in 2022

I'm sticking with it. I definitely see the quality of the story of the already, but yeah this book is sexually depraved in the beginning. Basically every relationship is incest. The matriarch said her family was so inbred they often had animal features. A dude married a 9 year old. A woman worked off a debt by sleeping with 70 men per night. Etc. Got my pearls clutched tight over here.

Science fiction is mixed in throughout and it starts with some smaller novels that more resemble Black Mirror episodes than a straightforward novel. Really really enjoyed it up until the final storyline which stretched over probably the last quarter of the book. Just dragged a bit. But really good overall.

It was the big one that my school didn’t read for some reason, but I enjoyed it as a first-timer now.

Trust - This book was great. I dont even really know how to describe it, without giving anything away. One of those books that's better the less you know. It's about a financial baron in the Gilded Age. Recently watched The Gilded Age tv show and gave a bunch of the same vibes. It's not really about that though. Again hard to describe, but it has some great twists and social commentary. It's a book that sticks with you. Several different takeaways, depending on your perspective.

Invisible Child - Pulitzer Prize winner. NYT reporter followed the life of child and her family in the system. Bounced between shelters, welfare, subsided housing, homelessness ect. We are so broken. We have failed so many of our own citizens. Heartbreaking, yet phenomenal read.

Allow Me To Retort - This was a great read. He goes over the constitution, the amendments and pretty much shits all over it because it was made for white men basically. Destroys the conservative talking points ect. Pretty good cathartic read.

Box 88 - These are spy novels that Goodreads suggested because I read Red Sparrow. I enjoyed them very much. I wish they were more of a defined trilogy like Red Sparrow, but it looks like it's a procedural series that will go on indefinitely. Wont stop me from reading them in the future but I prefer a story that has a end point.

    5. Paper Tiger - Tom Coyne - 10/10 - It's my favorite book and I read it once a year. Basically its my dream and a reminder not to necessarily chase it right now all wrapped in one golf book.

    6. Phil - Alan Shipnuck - 7/10 - was a pretty insightful book about Phil but I know whenever Phil decides to do a tell all this book will be blown out of the water.

    7. The Cup They Couldn't Lose - Shane Ryan - 8/10 - I really enjoy the Ryder Cup, Its one of a few live tournaments/comps that I'll watch. Lots of great info and in-site but it wasn't as in-depth about the whistling straits Ryder cup as I was expecting.

    8. I would like to Play Alone - Tom Segura - 6/10 - Was really kind of let down by this book. I pre-ordered it and kind of thought it would have me laughing like his stand up. Which was my mistake, but still a bit of a let down. Definitely worth the time though.

    7. The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter -6/10 - I think this would be interesting to read with periodic discussion throughout. Some really great themes but as a single read, it’s incredibly boring. I never connected to a character and that makes a book with very few major events pretty boring. It took me an extremely long time to read(mixed with life stuff) and legit kind of turned me off reading for big stretches. I need a palette cleanser.

(I also got sidetracked with To Paradise. It’s a weird, dry slog to start and I couldn’t decide if I wanted to invest the time. I may circle back.)
