thats my angle, to shore up the footprint and solidify the urban market. but I obviously empathize with why UF does not want another instate school in the conference.
I don’t see why Georgia, bama, etc would want Miami either. It would make cherry picking south Florida even easier to relegate them to a second class citizen
South Florida recruiting has always been an NIL deal. Now its just legal to do it. I dont think any school should ever be concerned about access to those recruits. But Georgia can sustain its stature just off its home state + 5 hour radius. We aren't reliant on south of I-4 like others.
What does Clemson actually bring to the SEC? North Carolina schools are in a weird spot here, very clearly south, but probably don't want to be dragged down by SEC academic label. They're also all seemingly tied together by the legislature, so NCSU and UNC are likely a package deal as well. Same goes with VTech & UVA.
I don’t want Clemson but here’s the case for them: say it’s not about markets but who can put a compelling product on tv. The SEC has always had an edge because it’s the most “rabid” fans. They are a “just means more” type of school. Maybe watching the 20 most passionate schools would move the needle more than adding anything like Cincinnati
It's also going to cost anyone in the ACC that isn't ND $100 million to leave the conference. Does Clemson have that?
The only way any of this stuff is in play is if the ACC folds and that agreement becomes null and void. Tv could tear it up if they thought it’d be worth it
This is correct, I also think you look west coast as well. There are some very large uptapped markets
How much further west do we really need to go? I get it, but it just seems stupid. I dislike the expansion shit. Gonna be funny when we have two super conferences that have 4 divisions that mimic 4 of the old conferences.
Gotta start thinking about these schools as brands instead of separate entities, IMO. AZ legislature isn't going to allow the split up of ASU and UA.
No have to think of these schools as keys to revenue streams. No reason to get two keys to the same stream. In order to add a team to the league the amount of revenue has to be greater than the difference from splitting the pie by an additional slice. For the big10 it was worth it for the LA market to add two teams. Not many markets like that left.
If I had to guess what I think will happen which is completely uninformed: Washington, Oregon, Stanford, Notre Dame to Big 10. Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado to Big 12. WSU, Oregon State, Cal to Mountain West
A Lake? There is no reason to add them absent Jimmy Pitaro saying, "You get them and I will give you [x] amount more per year". Which, if it didnt happen with Texas...its not likely happening with a medium sized non-flagship school in a small state.
Bingo. this is why its really ominous if youre FSU and I totally get them spinning their wheels hard. FSU will ultimately get into the Super League. They just are going to have some lean years in the meantime while we have this stopgap configuration.
I do wonder how Sankey and Warren handle the grant of rights once the two families come together to form the new new CFP. Is it just the playoff games that go out to market, is it the playoff + conference championships, or is it playoffs + inter-conference/non-conference package. You put that bad boy out to market, get as many broadcast networks involved, and you got a mini-NFL stew going.
We shall see. I certainly don't think ASU fits the B1G brand. While we're at it, please add Univ of Houston so both Texas schools can cry about it in the corner.
I don't see them going to the big10 at all. Arizona fits though. So you could see them getting split that way and then both are happy.
I’m not thinking from an academic standpoint or teams being tied together. That was just four teams that made sense geographically that were well rounded enough at sports to be competitive. Clemson to give South Carolina a rivalry.
They are certainly treading water right now given they have a vacation bible school counselor leading their athletic department They will for sure end up in the super league but who knows if they backdoor their way into the sec
Are we renaming the SEC when these schools are added? I guess we didn’t when Missouri joined, but it feels like a rebrand would be needed.
Glad we agree that having Stanford and Oregon in the Southeastern Conference would necessitate a name change.
Notre Dame, Kansas, North Carolina, and Nebraska. National brands who care about sports (or care a lot about a sport), and it would instantly be the best conference in every major sport.
Kansas cares about one sport and one sport only and Nebraska hasn’t had a winning season it seems in any sport in 20 years it feels like
I'm gonna jump in here and get dragged real quick. I think the sec should add Clemson, FSU, North Carolina, and Virginia. If UNC and/or UVA decline, go get NCST and VT.
Miami/FSU/UNC/NCST is my final 4 that I would take if I were Sankey Fuck Clemson and UVA seems more like a B1G institution
Miami, UNC, UVA, and one more If Notre Dame went to Big 10 then I could see Miami being a possibility for them since it would give them a national name and a firm spot in the south Florida market. I pick them over FSU if SEC takes a Florida school. UNC and UVA would lock up the south and expand the SEC control up to DC. They are no brainers Last one would be tough. Clemson would give a big name with a perfect football fit for the sec. Kansas would be huge basketball draw and would most likely improve in football when ISU, KSU and Ok St get left behind. Arizona schools would deliver a huge new market. Va Tech and WVU would be cultural fits but neither have the big name or fan base. Crazy options would be Oregon, UW, BYU, and maybe Colorado
I'm not sure but if all of this was happening in 2014 would it be looked at differently? Bowden had his chance and turned it down, at this point it's likely UF and South Carolina plus maybe UGA band together to stop any expansion involving our states.
UNC and Notre Dame are the obvious top two. I’d take UVA and Tech if they wanted in and pushed first.
I feel like all the SEC teams would be happy to cut FSU and Miami out just from a recruiting perspective, but I don’t know how this would impact the tv deals which is actually driving this.
