I haven't read any reviews. I'm not going to. I'm still very excited to see it Thursday and nothing is going to change that. But it's currently at 70% on RT, which would put it among the lowest scored on that site for an MCU movie. I don't know what that means and won't until I see it.
I think is extra true here. Even it L+T was as good as Ragnarok, it's not going to "feel" the same because of how original Ragnarok felt - especially coming out of the first 2 Thor movies.
I don’t think they’ve done a great job of introducing/explaining the multiverse so far. Feel like there’s quite a few holes and confusion.
There are quite a few people that don’t really like this movie. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, but I doubt all of those people are being “snobs” either
So, apparently Kraven the Hunter in the new movie is going the be an animal LOVER? Like Poison Ivy but for animals? What the fuck?
It seems incredibly clear to me how all of this tied together…I’m not sure what these critiques are all about. Do people just need everything spelled out for them more explicitly?
I think you guys are overestimating the number of people who consume all content the way we do. some people just want to go to the movies every few months and yes, they want it spelled out to them. and a lot of them probably didn't read the comics and need to have who the characters are explained to them as well. and just to be clear I'm only talking about like a quarter of the people that go to the movies, but they make a difference for things like RT scores and I wouldn't count on critics making sure they watched all the D+ shows before seeing the movie either. also for the record before people try to argue with me, I love P4 and think L&T is going to be great. I'm just trying to explain the relatively shitty audience scores the movies have been putting up lately.
I always assumed Hailee could revise her role but I guess she’s Hawkeye now so whoever that is can play live action Spider-Gwen imo
The reviews seem to just keep getting worse but have had a couple friends tell me it's awesome - so I have no idea wtf I'm walking into at this point.
I'm sure it has some flaws but fine and enjoyable and that people overhyped themselves after how great Ragnarok was.
You have to look at Covid as well. There was a huge gap where theaters were closed, production delays or stoppages, Movies and Disney + shows being released out of order, and Gunn’s brief firing which pushed Thor ahead of Guardians 3. They’ve had to adjust on the fly. That has to factor into the connectivity of the phase. Also, it’s a wider and grander vision. There’s a lot to take in with multiple dimensions, realities, and multiverses. There’s magic time police and a bunch of people with new and undefined powers. There’s a lot to keep up with. I think the new multiverses reduce the stakes even more for the characters. You already barely had anyone die from the main casts, but now, everyone is theoretically replaceable from a multiverse like Gamora.
First patient canceled tomorrow so I’m sneaking into a showing tonight so I can tell the haters to STFU. Will take the kid this weekend.
Spoiler I have one complaint, I would have liked it to be like 10 minutes longer and have some more scenes of Gorr killing other gods etc
Yeah, if Ragnarok didn’t exist, people would be going nuts for this movie. It’s not quite as good but still wildly entertaining and will be equally as rewatchable.
It's not ass. I liked it. Some of the criticisms I've seen are valid in some areas, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good movie. Spoiler The main miracle of Ragnarok is that some serious shit happened in that movie (Odin dies, Asgard is destroyed), but they somehow wove that stuff around a ton of goofy shit and it somehow worked to the point where it didn't feel like they cheapened the sad stuff with all the silliness. That's incredibly hard to do, and I think this movie showed that because you take a lot of huge swings when you do that and I don't think they pulled it off as well. There's a lot of silliness in this movie, and I don't think some of it worked well with the Gorr story. The open of the movie with that stuff back-to-back is an example of that. So I get the tonal issues I've seen some reviews suggest. I still enjoyed it and love the characters.
Oh fuck all the way off critics Movie was awesome. Breezy and fun. Hit the comedy when it wanted, hit the feels when it wanted. Felt like a 2.5 hour movie that got cut down to the bare minimum. Every act could have been 10 minutes longer, but I'm not going to complain about a movie that didn't overstay its welcome and was never not entertaining.
This could have been a subplot for sure, but it might've become redundant after a while. I dunno. I think there are many different versions of this movie left on the cutting room floor, and I bet most of them are good and some are better than what we got. What we got was very good, though. Best phase four movie behind Spider-Man. I really don't get the hate this movie seems to be getting. On the one hand, I can hear the complaints and see them as valid, but I don't think they are so bad as to ruin the experience the way some are implying. Could the movie have been a little less rushed? Sure. Could there have been more time devoted to the villain doing his villain thing? Sure. Were there moments of tonal whiplash where a sad or downbeat scene is immediately accompanied by a quippy, improv comedy scene? Sure. But the extent of those issues were not enough to dampen my overall enjoyment of the film. I thought it was great. Was it better than Ragnarok? That's hard to say. I wonder if this movie had come out before Ragnarok, exactly like it is, how the reception would have been. I have a hunch it would have been close to what Ragnarok received (a lot of 9/10 rankings, etc). I wonder then, how Ragnarok would have been received as the follow-up to this movie. That's a film whose title implies the literal destruction of Thor's home would be the centerpiece, instead it's regarded as a comedic afterthought until the very last scene. I wonder if fans were so uninspired by the first two Thor movies that either of Taika's films would have been received as a favorable and needed shot in the arm. In that regard, I suppose the big problem people have with Love and Thunder is that it doubles down on the little things people had a problem with in Ragnarok (but didn't mind at the time because it was a fresh take on the character). I don't think that makes it worthy of a bunch of 6/10 rankings that the movie seems to be getting. I thought this was as enjoyable as Ragnarok, or maybe a hair below it. I certainly loved the villain and his motivation more here than I did with Hela. Overall I'd give it a high 8/10, but it's such a brisk and easy-to-enjoy movie that subsequent viewings might improve that score. that's my spoiler free review. Good night
Spoiler I think the first act was a little “too funny”. Additionally, and I know how this is going to sound, I think Portman’s Lady Thor fell a little flat. Valkyrie and Korg nailed lines but despite loving Portman, I was never super intrigued by her part in the movie. I thought we’d learned that tying superhero movies to love stories usually fails and I think this is a victim of that. Gorr definitely needed more screen time.
Spoiler Did Thor put the crumbled pieces of Mjolnir in the glass case? Was someone else worthy enough to move them? Thought him talking to his different weapons was a comedy bit that hit every time
Back row corner by myself. High as Fucking Sputnik. LFFuckingG!!! Asgards not a people, it’s a DirtBall…
It's not Ragnarok. I don't think it's all that close. And that's not because it wasn't good. It's because Ragnarok was remarkable. When I saw Ragnarok there were probably 10 scenes I thought about in the half hour after seeing it the first time where I thought "I want to come back immediately and watch this again," and I did. I probably saw that movie 4 times in the theater. This was good. I'll see it again. Probably in the theater at some point. Definitely will throw it on from time to time when it hits D+. But there aren't parts sitting in my head that I need to watch again right now. And that's okay. But comping it to Ragnarok is just a bad idea, IMO.
I think I disagree with this. Spoiler I liked the Jane stuff a lot. I thought they handled it very well. I really enjoyed the stuff with Thor, Jane and Valkyrie. One of the weaker reviews I saw on RT was complaining that Valkyrie was tossed aside or something and I don't get that at all. She was in this movie a lot and was very good. Also thought the stolen kids part was done pretty well. The only Jane thing I thought was weird was the second post-credit scene. Not that it was bad. Just felt weird to me as a capper in that spot. Bale was great, and agree they could have given him more screen time, but I think that could have happened with 5-10 extra minutes of him as opposed to taking other stuff out.
Spoiler I liked Jane by herself, loved her with Valkyrie, everyone is great with Korg…but romance in these movies always feels like borderline cheesy romcom stuff. I can just do without as a whole.
Spoiler I tend to agree about romantic stuff in a lot of these movies. I thought this was done well enough to where I didn't think it felt forced. And the story arc of both characters made it make sense. Jane's dying and Thor's lost everyone already.
