On the race feed they said the safety car came out with Charles about 11 seconds away from pit entrance. Carlos was 16 seconds. Everyone who has watched F1 knew the minute the car broke down on the straight that a safety car was coming... Ferrari has zero excuses.
I'm sure they did but I would like to see the breakdown of where he would have ended up had they pitted him.
Had he pit and everyone else stayed out he would've been 3rd behind Carlos and Lewis. Edit: Gap at the time of safety car to Charles... Sainz +4.712 Lewis +6.196 Perez +29.286 Norris +43.539 A pit stop under green conditions you lose about 19 seconds and 10 seconds of lost time under a safety car. So he's 3rd with fresh tires and the fastest car on track... The only way Charles loses the race is by not pitting him.
Ingenious engineering to operate in the grey area and get an edge is how you win and it’s naive if you think your team doesn’t try to do the same
During race I think they said there was a 6 second period they could have called for him to box. EDIT: apparently it was 11?
I think there was a risk had they pulled both in at the same time, would’ve had them stacked at the pit with Sainz waiting behind Leclerc. As we’ve seen from Ferrari already this year lol
That was the Binotto excuse, but it should have been fine barring a catastrophic pit stop and it ignores the fact that had they let Charles through earlier there would have been more than enough time to stack them. Instead they kept telling Sainz to hit times he couldn't while his teammate with a broken wing was quite a bit faster. Makes sense why the Ferrari garage was less than enthused with their second best driver on the day pulling out the win at the expense of Leclerc. Especially when the strategy was supposed to be Carlos give Charles 10 car lengths and use your fresh tires to defend and instead he was like yeah nope I'm going for the win and hung Charles out to dry. (I don't agree with that initial call from Ferrari to have Carlos defend at that point either, but either way it's not a good look)
I think the fact that Carlos is overriding strategy decisions definitely has Ferrari in a bad place. At the same time, when he's making those overrides, he's making the right decision for himself. Horner and Wolff wouldn't put up with those kind of shenanigans from a second driver, but Binotto and Ferrari seem to prioritize WCC over WDC which actually seems to be costing them both.
100% this, Carlos did the same thing in Monaco ignoring a team order to pit which allowed him to get in from of Charles. Again it was the right decision for him personally, but it also screwed his teammate. That wasn't the only issue with Monaco, just another example. They are making calls for Charles that are dependent on what Carlos does and when he overrides them it creates a shit show.
Yeah it was 11... The announcer originally said 6 but he was talking about the gap between Sainz and Charles. He corrected himself and said it was 10/11
Binotto doesn't want to air out any of his drivers. Wants to keep things in house and because of that has the impossible task of trying to form a position that serves the defense of his pit strategy and the defense of his driver. On the first stint he ignored orders or couldn't hit the lap times given to him. Instead of letting Charles pass he kept asking for more laps. On the second stint he refused to let Charles pass and forced the team to give Charles the "you are free to fight" After the fucked up pit call they asked Carlos to give Charles a 10 car length head start and Carlos refused and said he would be challenged by the guys behind him (something that was going to happen anyway) So Binotto has a rightfully furious Charles he needs to calm down, a horrendous pit call to cover up and he has to explain why Carlos refused multiple team orders... If Binotto wants to keep his job he better grow a set and start treating his drivers like they have a pecking order because right now it comes off as him not being supportive of Charles and backing Carlos.
The whole driver dynamic is still weird to me. Everyone says the driver's biggest rival is his teammate but then melt down when a #2 tries to beat a #1. Going to take some getting used to.
The rules and view you take on a battle between Alpha Romero or Alpine don't apply to teams like Ferrari, RB and Mercedes. Mercedes literally negotiated a deal with Rosberg to give him a drivers title in return he would retire and the inserted Bottas into his seat so Hamilton would be happy at the team. Danny Ric was run out of RB because at like 19 years old people understood Max was a generational talent.
It’s more you absolutely don’t want to be slower than your teammate, but intentionally fucking them/the team over is frowned upon.
I get that part of it. But damn, Carlos clearly had a car to win the race as he literally did win the race so telling him to just play defense for Charles is tough. It's weird to have guys be competitive all their lives to win and move up levels and then get to the top level and then try to do well on mid pack teams to earn a spot... as bitch to the lead driver of a top team. I get why it happens, just weird as an outsider coming in to see the 3rd and 4th best seats in the sport just be support drivers for the 1st and 2nd best seats in the sport.
I mean the team order to give Charles a 10 car length head start is something almost every other driver would’ve ignored too
Yeah I don’t think it’s as big of a deal when he’s ignoring dumb shit orders. I also wonder how far ahead Charles would’ve been if he didn’t get held up for those laps.
Any constructor #1 seat is better than a #2 seat, so Alpine #1 and Merc #1 easily better. Lando at a traditional powerhouse customer team that they've built the entire team around and given him a marketing spot is another. George appears to be the heir apparent to an aging Lewis so you can say Mercedes #2 is better for that reason.
Maybe it's bc I'm new to this but saying you'd rather have Lando's seat than Checo's this year is wild to me. Checo and Sainz have infinitely better cars than any non RB or Ferrari #1. They at least have a chance to compete for a win when they aren't playing second fiddle.
Yeah that's a rough take in today's environment. But I also think it takes the right fit for the reality of RB2 to match the idea of RB2. That particular seat has eaten up a lot of guys for different reasons, but it appears that Checo is a great match there (at least in the short term)
In a hypothetical situation where Fernando and Checo are teammates, who do you think is going to win? Who do you think makes more money per year as a driver?
Equal machinery Alonso beats checo most days. Still better to be in the Red Bull garage than alpine ATM
But they're not hiring Alonso-level guys ... they're hiring clear Driver 2s who know their role and know when to get out the way. That's why the seat is not as good.
This is an imperfect analogy but some of you guys are arguing that Jimmy G's job as Tom Brady's understudy is better than him moving to the 9ers, being a starter and making a ton more money.
You're arguing you'd rather be the #1 WR for Jimmy G and we're saying we'd rather be a #2 WR for Tom Brady
