If new markets was the answer, the sec would’ve taken unc and uva and the big 10 would e taken Clemson and fsu markets mean shit. No one in nyc is watching anymore big10 ten games because Rutgers joined the big 10 than we’re watching Indiana and northwestern play on the big10 network before Rutgers joined
NCST has been to 2 CWS in the past 10 years and has won a basketball national championship in its history
Thank you for proving my point. UTEP also has a basketball national title, maybe they should be next?
I think the truth is that markets still matter just not nearly as much as they did 10 years ago when the B1G went after Buttgers
this is coming soon everywhere. No way some of these schools that can’t pull their own weight don’t get squeezed out next
It took some time, but taking y’all finally paid off by getting Texas and Oklahoma. Be thankful we aren’t kicking you out now that we have the other 2 secured.
We've carried the conference in football for most of 20 years and we're the most watched program in the country and we've been good with an equal split so far so I don't see that changing
I just don’t think there’s anyway some of these schools get to come along for the ride and get in just because they were originally in the big 10 and sec money is just too much of a player here
Conferences need bottom feeders. There needs to be guaranteed wins on the calendar otherwise you will have too many top dogs fighting for 10/11 win seasons and not everyone can have 10/11 win seasons every year. Boosters for those top teams will not accept 5 win seasons constantly if conferences just go to super leagues. That is the main difference between the NFL and College now. Boosters still have a role and they want wins. I'm probably completely wrong on this, but that's my opinion on why super leagues might not happen at least.
Super leagues are going to happen, but I’m not sure current members are being kicked out for reasons other than being bad at football. That seems like a litigation nightmare.
not sure how you can sit back and look at the destruction of traditional and regional rivalries and conferences and the big 10 having teams in California (and having 16 teams) and not think super conferences are here
Is this to say that tmb user Dump has less conference sway than tmb user Owsley? Will sankey at least do a poll of all of the members with an SEC "fan of" to make sure there's equal representation?
Agreed. They dgaf about anything else. All the new conference brass are straight up corporate devils not academics.
I don’t think you understand how the BTN carriage fees were negotiated with the cable/satellite providers or you wouldn’t say things like this that are just demonstrably false.
They have different rates they pay the BTN (half owned by the B1G and half owned by Fox) for houses in markets with B1G schools vs those without. Here’s a CNBC article from 2007 that explains the general idea. https://www.cnbc.com/id/20413726/ The numbers talked about back then were $1.10 per household in B1G states vs $0.10 for houses in non-B1G states. Getting houses in new states was a big revenue bump for the conference. Maryland and New Jersey were super sexy because of it.
1. I think at the time, the conference had a contiguous states rule. 2. I also am quite certain at the time that the BTN was launched a bunch of people were convinced it would flop. 3. The only school in Florida that the B1G presidents (notoriously snobby academics) would probably consider is Florida and I don’t think Florida has ever been looking to leave.
Virginia Tech, Louisville, NC State, Clemson, and FSU in the Big 12. UNC, Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami in the B1G.
This is wrong. Markets will never not matter anytime in the foreseeable future. They matter less now than before but they don’t mean nothing. Clearly the big ten values them. The SEC values them less and just focuses on the maximum on field product gain.
And the most money. Was listening to Tom Fornelli talk on this earlier…big ten has 10 of the top 15 largest alumni bases in the country now with UCLA added in. This includes Rutgers in one of those 10. We clearly have a type and it’s not always just based on on field football product. It’s why UNC and UVA would be higher in the ACC pecking order for the B1G than Clemson because the B1G, for however laughable it may be, still puts on the caring about academics, profile fit, etc and the presidents view that very highly. Also Markets.
