Am I remembering wrong that they have the most tournament appearances without a trip to Omaha? If I am I want to see them in Omaha.
And it’s not like amazing, but with how much effort and money the AD put into baseball here for a long time it could be a lot worse.
When van horn left we should have hired Childress and not Anderson. The amount of instate talent we lose is frustrating. In the 2023 class alone we have three players committed to kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. Not including the kstates/iowas of the world.
Another thing that never has made sense for football or baseball is building an unbreakable relationship with iowa western. But can’t want to see what Marc Rardin does with a d1 program at western kentucky.
This is something we’ve done in our youth baseball programs to keep kids from throwing too many pitches. You put a runner on 2nd base and the offense has one out. Gives them a runner in scoring position with a chance at go ahead/winning run. If neither team scores, the next inning we do runners at 2nd and 3rd and two outs. personally think it’s dumb for college baseball but maybe they’re being reactionary after all the top college arms got hurt this year.
Douchebag Tony Vitelllo on MLB Network coverage, watching at a bar but anyone dropping Irish references should get a raise.
Was pretty highly thought of, but can't stay healthy. I think 3 of his 4 seasons ended in an injury and the only one he finished was a bit disappointing as he was coming of TJ surgery. Could be a nice pickup if he regains his form.
Legendary USM Coach Corky Palmer Passes Kendall Rogers News A college baseball and Southern Miss legend has passed away, as Carlton Devan ‘Corky’ Palmer died Wednesday afternoon, the school announced. “I am fortunate to have been blessed to claim Corky as my Southern Miss classmate and my friend,” USM interim president Joe Paul said. “His impact on generations of young men ripples out into the world of baseball and beyond. Corky was definitely one of a kind, and we will honor and cherish his memory here at Southern Miss always.” Palmer, 68, had suffered a stroke earlier this year, and as a result, the USM community and State of Mississippi rallied around him, raising more than $31,500 to help pay for some of his medical expenses. You can read more about that, here. The Palmer family certainly won’t forget the gratitude so many Mississippians showed to their family. In turn, the USM and college baseball families won’t soon forget the contributions Corky Palmer made to the sport. The long-time Golden Eagles skipper played his college baseball at USM, and earned a strong reputation as a head coach with a stellar showing during a lengthy tenure at Meridian (Miss.) CC, where he guided the program to six seasons with more than 40 wins. Palmer’s success didn’t stop there. It only continued when he got the Southern Miss head coaching job after finishing his final season at Meridian with a 50-12 overall record. In his time with the Golden Eagles — 12 seasons to be exact — Palmer established USM as not only a premier mid-major program, but as a program on the rise, and now one of the model programs for a school looking to take that next big step. He led the Golden Eagles to eight of their 18 NCAA tournament appearances and reached a high-water mark in 2009 when he led the program to their lone College World Series appearance. He retired as the head man following that campaign. Overall, he guided USM to seven-straight NCAA tourney appearances, 30 or more wins 11 times and 40 wins or more six times. Palmer finished his Southern Miss career with a 458-281 (.619) overall record.
This might be the biggest story in the sport that no one's really talking about. Oregon State is the only program with 3 titles in the super regional era and their program might be about to go up in flames. (Unless they can transcend conference like Gonzaga in basketball)
They peaked in the 2000s when them and Texas were really the only games in town. Now A&M has been elevated since joining the SEC and Texas Tech and TCU are nationally relevant. DBU is a top 30 program. Plus Baylor, Houston, SHSU, even Texas State etc. And that doesn't even get into that it's a national recruiting landscape now and programs from all over are dipping into Texas. They just don't get even close to the players they used to get anymore. You probably won't see another Fullerton or Rice type run (i.e. non-P5 that is consistently elite year in year out) again. Sucks, imo.
