If you want to do A castle in Scotland, take the train to Edinburgh and do the castle there. Amazing view overlooking the city and the Whisky Experience is right outside the gates. As others have said, you could do a year in London and not see everything. If you’re looking for a day or two, do Tower of London, Borough Market (has the HMS Belfast right there as well), walk by Parliament/Big Ben and Buckingham. Camden is also great for food, pubs, etc. Never been to Canterbury but if you’re going to go all the way to Kent, I’d do Dover Castle and the White Cliffs. Might be a bit far for a train day trip. Also keep in mind there are periodic rail strikes going on right now; they’re scheduled but they might be adding more and the trains might be crowded the day before and after so just be aware of it.
Westminster Abbey is definitely worth visiting as well, imo. If you do go to Canterbury and stay the night, stay here: https://www.canterburycathedrallodge.org/ You get free access to the Cathedral as many times as you’d like + access to the Cathedral grounds in the mornings and nights when it is closed to the general public.
Bath wouldn’t be in my top tier of destinations but it’s solid second tier. The Roman baths are great and the cathedral across the street is beautiful
We stayed in a little airbnb on All Saint's Lane right on the Great Stour, maybe a five minute walk from the Cathedral. Cathedral is good, Greyfriars Chapel is cute and the City Wall was a nice walk. Westgate has a cool little museum and you can walk the walls a bit. Ate at the Thomas Becket one night, long wait but good ales
Wound up in Aruba on an impulse. We were planning on booking the Hyatt but it sold out at the last second. Wound up in an ocean front suite on Phoenix Beach. Not a bad way to kill 2 days.
Norway is pretty nice, guys. Cruising on the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes and the scenery just keeps getting better and better.
we have a place not to far from there. Go to Zeerovers, other end of island but worth the seafood. Hyatt casino is fun.
Heard great things about Zeerovers but we don't have time unfortunately. Gonna have to come back to check it out. Went to Lola last night and Smoky Joe's today's. Any suggestions on bars around here for after dinner? We went to Bugaloe last night and that was fun.
Most of whats up by you are mostly beach bars by day. Bugaloe is a good choise. Oranjestad obviously has infamous nightlife. Then there are the dives that the locals hangout at in San Nicolas, like Charlies (but too far for you this time).
Sayulita, Mexico tomorrow for a week. Hoping the weather sticks to afternoon thunder storms and I get some daylight in the morning and dry nights. Looking forward to all the street tacos
Ugh that sucks. It is a pretty remarkable city The Milkman is currently there -- is it overrun with gringos?
any recommendations for towns in coastal Maine for a family trip of ~10 people, late next summer? tia
My family has a house there and I’d say the Russian expat scene is just as strong as the ugly Americans.
Within Salt Lake City itself, no, but I thought driving across the Great Salt Lake Desert and Bonneville Salt Flats outside of town was a pretty unique experience if that type of thing interests you.
I was there for 2.5 months, now I have to be in Houston the next 2 months until my immigration clears. No, it’s not overrun with gringos. That’s an overstatement
Had 2 girls behind me. 6 and 8ish maybe. They spent the entire 3 hour flight screaming and throwing stuff over my chair onto me. Also they had their feet on my seat back kicking it for 3 hours. For the fucking love of god bring something to entertain your kid. So many people show up and expect the kid to sit patiently for hours on end. It's not going to happen.
Our flight from Toronto to Gatwick on to Athens got discontinued. Now we are leaving a day earlier from Montreal and we are going to spend an extra day in Athens. Works for me. Got a hotel in the Plaka district. Any recs?
Couler Locale is an awesome rooftop bar. Brettos distillery was pretty cool in Plaka. Eat lots of gyros and baklava. Plaka is dead in the evenings so go to nearby Psiri for dinner or going out.
Nice I’ll check that out. Google tells me our hotel is a 5 minute walk to Locale. Our hotel is said to be a stones throw from the Acropolis. I intend to see how accurate that is from our rooftop. Also Six Dogs looks pretty cool. Any chance you came across it?
Did not come across Six Dogs but it looks cool. Wife and I were only in Athens a couple days but like the city a lot. They have lots of outdoor seating for drinks and food. Lots of rooftop bars with views of the Acropolis. Was also pretty cheap to eat and drink there compared to larger cities in Europe.
Some teenager in front of my son is getting annoyed bc he keeps slamming the tray table. It's fucking 1130. You don't need to take a nap. I promise you, parents are trying to control their kids. A 2 year old doesn't really listen and know what's going on
Even though we were smart enough to not have kids I'm very patient with kids on planes because I figure nobody wants them to be still and quiet more than the parents. However, if your kid is slamming the tray table up and down, kicking seats, or otherwise physically disrupting other passengers that's on you.
selfish as shit to take your child on an airplane if you know he/she is going to disturb everyone else particularly if its just to go to your 4th different vacation spot in the caribbean that year, leisure rather than some business/familial obligation to travel.
