I'm all for Keon getting the bag if that's what he wants, but I can't ever imagine trying to talk my nephew out of the school he wants to go to. Especially a school like ND. But if the uncle is really just trying to make sure Keon knows all his options, I can respect that

And then there is this from singer:

was at practice today as well and I have to say.... I just do not like Buchner's throwing motion or the lack of zip he puts on the ball in drills compared to Angeli and Pyne.

Every other report I’ve heard has been that he has a rocket arm he just struggles to aim it.
I think Singer has the least football intelligence of all the beat dudes.

so the hope and prayer here is that we have the 2017 offense but with a much better passer at QB with Buchner over Wimbush...that 2017 offense was so physical because of that oline and the run game w/ Wimbush's legs

I know nothing about this Singer guy, but from time to time we have to remember that some of these guys are like English majors from DIII schools that somehow just stumbled on these jobs after grinding in the industry and watch 5 practices a year and think they are experts on every position. Sometimes you see the narrative you're looking to find

I love O'Malley's practice reports, just the right amount of humor and content and he knows his stuff...this is from the offense today

Notre Dame, Ind. — It doesn’t get much more August-football friendly than 72 degrees with a light breeze and that’s exactly what greeted Marcus Freeman’s Irish for Day 7 of training camp at the Irish Athletics Complex.

No additional injuries to report on the offensive side with Mitchell Evans and Jadarian Price headed into the Gug (presumably) for treatment as our viewing started and Joe Wilkins working tirelessly on the side—in full pads—as he recovers from LisFranc surgery (April 1).

    • That’s former Irish offensive lineman and current Player Development Director Hunter Bivin head-butting a couple of helmeted players during stretching…
    • Two particular offensive players received the business end of a fist to the football in today’s opening fumble drills with Benjamin Morrison practically assaulting classmate Tobias Merriweather and Junior Tuihalamaka working over fellow freshman Gi’Bran Payne on the other side. Neither player fumbled.
    • Houston Griffith gave Tyler Buchner some quality work in the drill as well, though not to the extent the RBs/WRs took, and that’s likely by design
    • I know this is an offensive report, but it must be noted: Jordan Botelho is not a great pairing for someone doing this drill. Yikes.

    SEGMENT 2

I headed outside to watch Harry Hiestand and Chris Watt divide the offensive linemen during low pad drills. One coach was a touch louder than the other in his teaching methods…

(Of note: they are going against other OL, not DL)

    — Hiestand is all over sophomore Blake Fisher for his pad level, then follows with a correction for Josh Lugg as well. Lugg’s second rep garners a ‘There IT IS!’ from Hiestand while Fisher earns “Beautiful! Keep driving BIG MAN!” from the O-Line sage.

    — Good rep for Joe Alt, and then another. Alt can really swallow a defender when he gets into him with leg drive.

    — Quality reps by Zeke Correll as Hiestand lauds him to ‘Keep Coming!’ several yards past the normal point in which the reps end.

    — Hiestand pleads with freshman Aamil Wagner to say low three times (same rep) and when Wagner fixed that for his next rep, he’s instructed that he “came up” upon first contact rather than staying low…

Andrew Kristofic is praised for creating “separation” while driving Ashton Craig back. Craig now wears No. 70 rather than #58 if you have an old roster.

    — Center Pat Coogan with good rep: “Drive, Drive, Drive!” Says Hiestand as they battled 8 yards off scrimmage.

Ty Chan is taller than 6’5”… Aamil Wagner needs a different number. #59 doesn’t work for me…

    — Define ‘Overkill’: The tackles break off with the tight ends and I move onto the receivers/running backs, but not before Blake Fisher and Michael Mayer work in tandem on an outside zone double team against an unfortunately paired walk-on tight end.

His day can only get better from there…

    SEGMENT 3-4

The always exuberant Chansi Stuckey takes his receivers through a passing window drill. (three pylons, two windows, receivers run past them and Stuckey fires the ball through one.)

This is my 13th August Camp and I’d rate the arm strength of those I’ve seen work with the wide receivers in drills as follows:

    • Former Holy Cross Quarterback Tim McDonnell #1
    • Former Boise State Quarterback Mike Sanford #2
    • Former NFL Wide Receiver Chansi Stuckey #3
    • And Former Running Backs coach-turned-WR Coach (2010-11) Tony Alford last…(Sorry Neighbor)

Captain Avery Davis wears only a left knee sleeve and seems full speed after tearing his ACL in mid-November.

A look at the running backs now begins with Deland McCullough working on a pass release drill (from the backfied) pending how the pass rusher (McCullough) attacks.

Skip Velotta catches the ball near the end of the drill but falls down to which McCullough offers “Goodness, Ski, be athletic.”

    (Only he didn’t say ‘Goodness’)

McCullough takes his ‘backs to the dreaded Gauntlet, “You Know What Time It IS!!”

a drill for A.) Pad Level, B.) Leg Drive, and C.) Finishing with control of the football—because McCullough has a punch stick designed to separate the pigskin from the arm pocket..

“Imma get one!” he promises the runners…(None fumble)

Chris Tyree fires through, “There it is CT!”

Audric Estime leans in early and is corrected by his coach, next time through, Estime apparently improved “You come through their like a Mad Animal! I like it though.”

    — Can’t run Straight UP! He says to Sam Assaf. Next time through, Assaf (already tall at 6’1” for an RB) is way too high and gets stuck. Tyree chimes in “S, you got it, start low but stay low” and Assaf—a special teams regular to be sure—breaks through the Gauntlet…

Logan Diggs takes full part in the drill. (The pads are not soft and contact with shoulders is a pre-requisite) and even in a pass pro drill in which he’s punched inside both shoulders by his partner. McCullough only allows Diggs one rep in the latter. (He remains in a protective red jersey).

    — Diggs receives praise for the next time through the Gauntlet when the runners are to spin out of the ‘tackle.’ That’s the second time in two viewings I’ve seen McCullough praise Digg’s spin move though the best I’ve seen (in at least one instance) was Tyree last practice.

    — Estime was coached twice to ‘stay behind your pads’ through the Gauntlet.

    SEGMENT 5

“Who is THAT?” I though to myself watching the tight ends and wide receivers run combo routes, catching passes simultaneously from both Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne.

Well “That” was #85 Holden Staes, who is a very fluid, very large athlete on the move down the seam…

Eli Raridon swallows passes with his hands. The ball disappears…

Braden Lenzy is corrected by Stuckey for route depth. “That was 4.5 not six” and responds with ‘Yessir, Yessir.’

    — Stuckey has words of encouragement for Tobias Merriweather after every rep. Correctional or otherwise…

    — Pyne drills one down the seam to Jayden Thomas…Buchner misses Colzie (behind) but throws an A+ dime down the seam to Davis …Pyne low to Thomas next time through crossing the deep middle—nice catch by the big man though there is no safety waiting with bad intentions…Steve Angeli with a rope to Merriweather…

    — The combo of Mayer (low) and Styles (high) might cause a problem or two this fall…

Ron Powlus III throws a really nice ball. His set-up takes a touch more though in my opinion. But it gets there in a hurry and is spinning…

    — And we’re ushered out as the receivers go vs. the back seven in live action. Of course they do…

(Great play by Clarence Lewis on a downfield pass breakup though it was under-thrown. Whoops, wasn’t supposed to see that…)

At just about any other school he wouldn't be expected to. WR is generally not an easy position to start that early, even for highly ranked kids. Most of our recent good WRs didn't really show out until year three. There are exceptions, but not many.
