Unless I missed it in one of the other deals we just did with NYK, seems like the insiders were wrong on the second 2nd rounder we got from them. The reporting was it was a top 55 protected pick from Miami in a couple years. This seems to suggest it's an actual pick.
I think he's doing a great job, but the only way he's "turned" that crap into Cade and Jaden is that we had a crappy team that bottomed out and he drafted them with the draft pick we earned on the floor.
Yes but also remember that teams have drafted players like Anthony Bennett and Michael Olawakandi at 1 so it’s not impossible to fail at that level
Our roster turnover has been great but there is still a lot of unknowns. I'm excited about the future, but the two biggest hits it appears Weaver has had was by winning the lottery and taking who everyone would have taken, and a guy falling to us that everyone in his position would have taken. Killian over Haliburton was an awful call, but getting Bey later that draft seems great. Everyone else is an unknown at this point pretty much. I'm not trying to be negative, just think the Weaver stuff is starting to get a little overblown. Again happy he's here and things are definitely looking a ton better, but let's wait and see a little bit
I’m with ya on the draft picks. He seems pretty shrewd when it comes to structuring trades though. The maneuvers he pulled from the Grant trade, then to the draft day trade with Charlotte was pretty impressive. The Olynk signing was awful, and the trade where we dumped Plumee, just to move down like 20 spots in the draft was a head scratcher.
Jaden Hardy is having a nice summer league too. I don’t get why we punted on our 2nd round draft pick this year.
I disagree. The process here has been sound. That's more important to me, at this point, than anything. He took over one of the worst situations in the league and turned it into one of the most promising ones in short order. Like, if Duren ends up sucking, does Weaver not get credit for turning chicken shit into a freaky athletic 6'10 250 lb 18 year old? Fuck that, do it again and again and again until we strike gold.
That’s a good point. We were all pissed off at Van Gundy for playing for the 8th seed every year, and finishing 7-10 in the draft every fucking year. At least Weaver realized only way to get better is to bottom out and luck out in the draft.
Pistons were long overdue for a tank so glad Weaver saw that and went into it. I'm not anti Weaver. I'd rank him 2nd in my power rankings of Detroit GMs, I'm just saying there is a lot of wait and see to do still
Clear #1 who needs actual professional contributors when you can get guys who rank high in prospect rankings. On the right track
I think the point is that Weaver took a trash situation with aging players on bad contracts and no assets and turned them into assets. This franchise was years of bad signings, bad drafts, and that Blake trade was terrible. Edit: even if he’s been lucky with lottery or drafted obvious picks
Detroit sports writers are embarrassing. After Lynn was busy kissing Avila ass all year and now kissing Illitch's, Pistons beat writers (thats a generous title for some parties involved) are currently fighting on twitter about credit for a topic that seems fairly simple
I was going to post that earlier. He was having quite the meltdown this morning. Woodward sports does suck though.
the fan sites are awful but I kind of love them “ripping off” the loser beat writers. “Spartanavenue” is the fucking worst
Who should the Pistons take in the 2023 nba draft? (No need to answer, just posting now so I can claim all these guys are ripping me off in 9 months)
Brian Cook is the original whining bitch blogger. The local pro guys are stealing their schtick from him.
I know journalism standards have gone way down everywhere, and anyone can be a "reporter" now, and I really don't follow local reporters a lot of other places....so I guess I'm just making a blind accusation, but I have to think Detroit has the worst media market for sports. Cushy as hell to be in charge of a team in this town. Reporters get more angry about someone covering the same topic as them than years upon years of struggling teams
Usually when we have good beat guys the national sites grab them quickly. Wojo is better than anyone Chicago has had in 20 years and their beat guys are trash. Mitch was fantastic back when he covered sports regularly. The local Wings and Pistons guys are terrible.
