    22. How High We Go In The Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu 8/10

    23. River of the Gods by Candice Millard - 7/10. Not quite as big a fan as the previous reviewer. The writing is fantastic and it's a great story. Focused too much on the politics and backstabbing of the 2 main characters and had almost zero insights to what they saw in the exploration. Best part of the book was the porter who served with them. Born in Africa, sold into slavery and moved to India, escaped slavery and returned to Africa to become one of the greatest explorers in African history. Wish more books like these would focus on these type of folks.

47- Sing, Unburied, Sing – Jesmyn Ward (10/10)

    48- The Gathering – Anne Enright (8.5/10)
Winner of the 2007 Booker Prize, it is told through the eyes of an Irish woman in the wake of her brother’s death. Enright employs a heavy dose of dark humor as the furious narrator provides an accounting of her very large family’s history while trying to make sense of the death. Told over 39 chapters, it was easy to bounce from one to the next despite the heavy subject matters and intellectual writing style

49- Fates and Furies – Lauren Groff (7/10)
A finalist for the 2015 National Book Award, it is about two attractive and talented Vassar students who get married before graduation. Told in two parts with the first focusing on the husband and the second the wife. I enjoyed seeing how each partner’s perception of the other matched reality but I kind of hated both characters

    50- Gutshot – Amelia Gray (8/10)
A collection of macabre short stories dealing in horror, humor, sex and the (extremely) grotesque. I am excited to read more of Gray’s work because I want to see what she can do in a novel. NYTimes review had this line: “Reading “Gutshot” is a little like being blindfolded and pelted from all sides with fire, Jell-O and the occasional live animal.”

51- Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories III – Annie Proulx (8/10)
The last installment in Proulx’s series of Wyoming stories, it has a couple standouts called Testimony of the Donkey and Tits-Up In A Ditch. She spends more time focusing on the harshness of WYO than on its beauty. And this time the harshness is rooted mostly in mankind instead of nature

Agree with you on fates and furies. I think that was kind of the point but didn’t make for enjoyably reading when everyone in the book seems like a bad person

    38.
The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America - Carol Anderson (9/10)
    39. Upgrade - Black Crouch (9/10)
    40. The Measure - Nikki Erlick (9.5/10)

Star Wars - As a contained novel - it was pretty good. Book attempts to fill in the gaps and 'fix' the abomination that was The Rise of Skywalker. Picks up with Landos line in the movie about how he and luke traveled around the galaxy researching the sith ect. It does an admirable job of giving dumb movie choices some depth, but the stench of TROS never really allowed me to get into it as much as I should have

Conversation With Friends. - Enjoyed this one, but not nearly as much as Normal People. Rooney is such a talented writer. Her stories are so simple, about regular people who find themselves in regular situations. One the surface you can say there's nothing unique about her books, but of the 2 Ive read so far, they do such a good job provoking thought, without hitting you over the head with it. I completely understand why she's so popular.

The Second - More a history book than anything. Talks about how the 2nd Amendment has been completely bastardized by modern right wing radicals. It's true intent was to allow states to maintain militias to put down slave revolts. The southern states were terrified and didnt trust a federal government, located in the north to give a shit about them.

Upgrade - Another great book by a great author. I said in another thread - his books are like the rare super hyped up summer block buster movie that actually delivers. Scientists have discovered how to alter the dna and genomes. The first big project, an attempt to prevent blight in crops in china is a huge failure that results in a massive famine. Gene editing is now a crime which creates several black market gene labs. People try to get upgrades. Read faster, change physical appearance, change predisposition to illness ect. Main character is an agent in the GPA (Genome Protection Agency) hunting down criminal geneticists.

The Measure - One day every in the world 23 and older gets a box delivered with a string inside. Both the box and string are indestructible. Everyone's string is a different length. Eventually the realize the length in the string represents your lifespan. As people turn 23 they receive the box. This book is about how society reacts to know individuals life span. Phenomenal book. Incredible social commentary. As I was reading, I was loving this book, but prepared for an unsatisfactory ending, thinking it would be difficult to pull off. The author nailed it. Incredible book, and even more impressive for a first novel.

Ive been pretty lucky have a great run of good books lately. I read Upgrade in 3 sittings. Read The Measure in 1 day yesterday. (Credit to overdoing last thursday on a team outing and not doing shit all weekend)

Just finished the 4th book in the Lonesome Dove series. All 4 we're great. Planned on just reading LD but someone on here rec'd them all. Thanks for that. Not quite as deep as The Border trilogy but close at times, especially in the last book.

Posted this before. It's a really good interactive map, using Google Earth, of locations from all 4 books.

Still want to know more about this subject. Textile mills were everywhere in SC and you always heard about the old way of life growing up. This almost 100 year old book wasn't the best primer on the subject, but I learned some info. Also a racist book even though the author is "enlightened" for the times.

Rogues - Collection of his long form essays and journalism.

Gabriel Allon - Use to be one of my favorite running series, but I think it has lost its steam. The last 2 books have been pretty bad. Im not sure I'll continue on w this one

Beautiful World, Where Are You - This was my last favorite Rooney book. I wouldnt say her other books were written for someone like me, but there were things I could relate to and I enjoyed them. This one especially wasnt written for me, and there was little I could relate to. All her books have excellent social commentary that I subscribe to, but it is embedded in the story and personality of the characters. A lot of the book is just two friend emailing back and forth to each other where Rooney goes on riffs about religion, politics that dont really have much to do w the plot or character development. She should have just written a long form article or released a podcast if she wanted to expound on that stuff, of which she has very good takes!

51- Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories III – Annie Proulx (8/10)

52- Let the Great World Spin – Colum McCann (9.5/10)
Winner of the 2009 National Book Award and 2011 International Dublin Literary Award, it offers a brilliant look into the lives of a diverse group of 1970s New Yorkers who are all connected by events that unfold over a couple days. A man walking a tightrope between the WTC towers looms over everything. It uses a variety of narrative styles and tones to illustrate how grief makes people from different backgrounds more alike than they might think

    53- Disgrace - J.M. Coetzee (8/10)
Winner of the 1999 Booker Prize, it is about a South African professor who abuses his status as a successful white man with power over women. Fleeing his Cape Town university, he seeks refuge with his daughter in a rural Eastern Cape area where racial dynamics become a focal point. A powerful novel about people exerting control over vulnerable members of their communities

54- The Reluctant Fundamentalist – Mohsin Hamid (8/10)
A finalist for the 2007 Booker Prize, it is told from the perspective of a young Pakistani man who graduates from Princeton and lands a job with a prestigious financial firm in NYC. Then the focus shifts to his experience with racism, identity, family and national values, etc. during the time between the 9/11 attacks and first few months of the war in Afghanistan

    55- Brooklyn – Colm Tóibín (9.5/10)
Winner of the 2009 Costa Book Award, it is a gorgeous coming-of-age story about an Irish woman who leaves her mother and sister behind in Ireland in search of opportunities in NYC. It reminded me of A Death in the Family because there is no antagonist. It is simply an intimate look at a pure and sympathetic individual. That Tóibín can make a novel about love, family and traditional values such a fun read is a testament to his strength as a writer

Had low expectations for the SW book because it's 'young adult' but I was pleasantly surprised. really enjoyed it

The other two are short stories in the ASOIAF universe that I re-read to brush up on Targaryan history for the new House of Dragon show.

Crouch's Dark Matter and Recursion were fun, easy, reads. Good stories sprinkled with science. Upgrade is a badass book. He's improved a lot imo. Enjoyed the hell out of that.

    9. Ready player 1 - Ernest Cline - 9/10 - i saw the movie first and thought the book would be true to it, for whatever reason. It’s insane how different the book was from the movie and wished the movie would have been true to the book. The book was phenomenal.

    10. Ready Player 2 - Ernest Cline - 8/10 - definitely not as good as the first one but definitely a great book. Not sure how how it could be made into a movie that falls in line with the first movie but who knows.

    11. An American Caddie in St. Andrews - Oliver Horovitz - 9/10 - was a great book. Went in thinking it would suck but definitely gripped me in and kept me going.

    12. Acid for the children - Flea - 4/10 - forgot I was part way through and finished it just too. Originally picked it up because of scar tissue.

    13. Two years in St. Andrews - George Peper - 5/10 was an interesting book but the best part was that it mentioned Oliver Horovitz in it.

    14. Life of the Party - Bert kriescher - 7/10 - was interesting that it has a different version of the machine story than his standup.

    15. Killing the killers - Bill O’Reilly - 1/10 - had to audio book it during the trip out to Colorado with my dad. His pick.

    16. Make your Next shot your Best shot - Dr. Bob Rotella - 5/10 - was fairly repetitive.

    17. Greenlights - Matthew Mcconaughey - 9/10 - had a lot of great stories and insight into his life. Made me start watching a bunch of his movies.

Got a lot of show prep. Finished the audible dramatization of The Sandman which was fantastic. Already a few eps into the show which I'm enjoying as well. A few hours into Fire and Blood ahead of House of the Dragon this Sunday (yes I'm prepared to be hurt again) then a Silmarillion re-read ahead of The Rings of Power.

Just an FYI The Rogue Prince and Princess and the Queen are the two short stories that mostly comprise what is covered in Fire and Blood. Those two novellas probably get through several seasons of House of Dragon. Then the Fire and Blood chapters about the Dance round it out.

It's a pretty basic football biography but I enjoyed it, learned some new details. Wadiak played 1948-51 and held all the UofSC rushing records until George Rogers. Stocky, quick white boy from the South Side of Chicago. Killed tragically in a wreck after being drafted by the Steelers (who sucked at the time and he was pissed about.)
