I think it’s pretty close to the base. I haven’t climbed my way to look at it. Too much shit in the way and I’m lazy.

    a. paying a surveyor in this case for millimeter-accuracy measurements sounds like overkill ? you don't need a licensed surveyor to determine whose property the tree fell on.

    b. i get quoted $1k - $2k for large tree removal and this is an area where people always quote high prices for stuff. $3k might make me think twice, unless there are extenuating circumstances, like difficult access to the tree?

I used the .5 zoom on my phone, makes a weird picture look even more weird.

Good luck figuring out what you’re looking at!

We’re looking at pouring our own retaining wall and had a question. We live in the Wichita mountains which are a reddish granite. If we were able to get the granite crushed into a sand and aggregate cut is there any reason not to use it in the wall in place of sand and standard aggregate? I remember IM Pei used a similar process but with a pink marble to tint a wall at the national archives. I see a few white papers where they suggest that granite sand and aggregate could be harder/more dense that standard recipes but wondering if there is something obvious I’m missing. Any advice would be appreciated.

That is a very cool idea. I can't speak to the efficacy of doing so, unfortunately. My knowledge of coloring concrete is pretty basic.
-Acid etch and stain (post pour) surface treatment, spalling and chips would show up badly.
-Dyed from truck/mix plant yields solid color throughout, but may not be good for multiple batch (9+yds) project due to color consistency.
-Exposed aggregate, where the finishers treat and then wash off the top layer of concrete to show the larger stones (think grouting/wiping tile) High degree of knowledge required, but might be your best bet.

Anyone ever had to “report” a neighbor to the city for some kind of ordinance?

Dude next door to me decided to build what I think is a homemade car port. Not only is this going to look like trash, but the “roof” is going to be sloped into my yard so any rain will just run off pretty close to my house. I also assume it’s not going to be very sturdy so I’m sure the first wind will cause it to blow into my back door or something. My GF is already losing her mind about it. Don’t really want to start a war with the guy, but also not sure I’m a fan of this lol

Call zoning and ask what setbacks are for your lots. If he has met setbacks, or gotten zoning approval, you're outta luck. If he as encroached, different story. Some structures don't require zoning/building permits where I am, further muddying the waters. Good luck.

Just bought a house...haven't had one in 15 years so I have absolutely nothing. Good friends live 2 doors down so we'll be sharing lawn mower, snowblowers, that sort of thing.

Any good recs on things I should be looking to buy? Definitely need a decent tool set and some power tools...anything outside of the obvious I may not be thinking of?

My best advice to wait s minute and focus on the “must haves” and not “nice to haves.” Regardless of age house is likely going to reveal some unexpected fixes and projects, and you don’t want to be staring at a bunch of nice new furniture and power tools wishing you’d saved that money to fix the roof/leaking basement/regrade the yard (like me).

He appears to be hauling metal panels on a station wagon. Fucker is dedicated, I'll give him that. As the structure is attached to the house, it qualifies (in my eyes) as an addition. This is good for your case. Seriously, call zoning. That's what they're there for.

I told my GF once it’s done the next time I mow I’m going to shake the roof to see how big of a POS it actually is.

This dude has a whole extended driveway on the side of his house that goes into his back yard (where this thing is going). I think he has only 3 cars now, but half his garage is filled with water stuff like kayaks and maybe a jetski. No idea why he thinks this is a good idea. He’s rarely outside so I never talk to him.

My neighbor on the other side does a whole ass haunted house/grave yard setup for Halloween that he starts Labor Day weekend so I feel like I’m currently living in god knows what.

I’m torn on this and don’t know if The Hebrew Husker is for real being a dick neighbor here. Does the rest of the property look like crap?

the runoff thing might be an issue - that gutters can fix- but otherwise I think you’re only really worried about aesthetics. And in that case if the rest of his house/yard doesn’t look bad then this likely won’t end up an eyesore either.

This is correct as well. If the neighbor has met his legal obligations, then Husker just has to deal with it. It will suck if it turns out to be crappy looking or affect his drainage, but I'm generally in favor of people being allowed to do what they will with their property.

To be honest, I figured I’d wait to see what it looked like when it was done. I’m just concerned with the water run off and the DIY aspect of it since it’s so close to my house. I can deal with the eye sore to an extent.

To answer your question, his property looks fine. They mow their lawn just enough so that it doesn’t look super long/unkept. It’s funny I feel like randomly he will do some random project like this, but never spends time mowing or doing landscaping or any “normal” stuff. I rarely see the dude unless he’s doing something like this.

At the end of the day, the last thing I want to do be be a dickhead for no reason, which is why I posted here. My thought process on posting was more seeing if I was 1. Being a dick 2. Didn’t know if I needed to “get ahead” of it.

To be clear, I agree with this. So I don’t want to just blindly call the authorities on the dude. It’s more just the potential “impacts” to my side of things that I’m trying to figure out how I would handle if needed.

3 year old AC unit stopped blowing cold. Little nervous, but it was the compressor and only cost $230 for the guy to fix it. They said it was under warranty so they would file it, get they money, and not charge me. Seemed like a good deal.

Let’s hope! I’ve started to cut the branches down.

We had a big area by the creek we’d have big fires, but that has since become a bit overgrown, and another tree fell down blocking the path.

I’m pretty sure you will have a next door enemy for life after this too so there is that to think about. Maybe just suggest an alternative drainage?

Since you asked the groups opinions it sounds like your lady is freaking out a bit for no reason and so you’re seeing a bigger problem than there looks to be.

Yeah, like I said in other posts, my true concern would be the drainage and just the fact it’s so close to my house if there were some piece blowing off in a wind storm or something. So I’ll at least see what happens once it’s done.

I think my GF inherited whatever gene it is from her parents that makes her notice/be bothered by stuff like this more than me. I think the thing that’s really doing it right now for her is this combined with my other neighbor’s yard being littered with random stuff for his Halloween setup, so it’s just extra magnified which I can actually understand. Right now it just feels like the house is stuck between Tim The Tool ManTaylor and Uncle Eddie or something.

Oof this baby isn't going to last at all. The only thing holding up any sort of snow load (I assume you are in Nebraska) is the sheer strength of the screws attaching it to the side of the deck and screws into the 4x4's supports. Also since there currently is no fascia, I would guess he doesn't plan on putting one on to then attach gutters to.

I would say theses are your options:
    • Talk to your neighbor about it, if he doesn't fix it find what codes he is breaking an report him. He will know its you if it comes to that.
    • Find what codes he is breaking a report him anonymously. He will have his suspicions its you but you can just feign ignorance.
    • Leave it be and address it if drainage or danger become an issue. My guess this won't last more than two years.
Sometimes it's best to pick your battles in neighbor disputes and it you can knit a relationship it can ease a lot of future headaches. I have reported one of my nextdoor neighbors for multiple violations and this was only after the things were doing had a direct tangible impact on me and talks with the person on other simple issues broke down. HTH
