It sounded like It wasn’t like they found out post-season but a little too late. I would bet it coincides with when we heard they were looking for 2 qbs in the class…
The fact that there was ever a question about Coan having another year was odd. That seems like a black and white thing.
Did it have anything to do with the idea that 2020 eligibility didn't count and everyone got a free year? IIRC the NCAA as a whole didn't settle the eligibility rules last year until during the season or very late summer
I remember last year it was being reported for like a week by our beat writers that ND was confident Coan could come back. And then it went radio silent for a week or two. And then all our beat writers were like “of course Coan can’t come back. Are you fans nuts?!” The whole thing was weird.
I mean, Coan is no gamebreaker but we could be 4-0 if he was here, definitely 3-1. Less running threat, yes, but at least we had figured out his strengths late year and the line was better. Unlikely, but maybe Austin would’ve even stayed had he known he didn’t have a fresh QB
I think the fact that we are all sitting here thinking that Coan is what the program needed is the problem. Last year's QB production should not be irreplaceable.
Something that I keep thinking about is that our complaints in this thread seem to pretty consistently get fixed on the field. It could simply be the team coming together but it seems like a concerted effort is being made to fix noticeable problems and that’s encouraging imo.
I’m thinking that Freeman (and Rees) likely needed this year to realize that this was fucked up. It’s just not very encouraging what’s happened with 2023 class though.
Probably just the fact it will end up being about the same as the last few years. Let’s see how they use the portal and churn over the team generally before getting too fussed
the school is going to have to play ball if they want to actually do this at the level they'll have to
They need someone, maybe even two. The transfer rules change that would help the most but I bet they won’t go there is getting like a RS soph who is close to graduating, can use their free transfer to see if they win the job, if they miss, graduate and then use a grad transfer. I can see nd widening but not that far unfortunately, so they will be stuck with guys who want to start or are ok sticking around for a few years if they miss
Incredibly early, but it is a bye week. This guy's 2024 mock draft has Alt #2 overall (after Caleb Williams) and Fisher #14 overall https://www.draftcountdown.com/mock-drafts/2024-7-round-mock-draft-rounds-1-3-shane/
Worry not. I suspect there will be a number of very capable qbs in the transfer portal to choose from this off-season to get us through 2023 with bolstered ranks.
His dad played at UNC and his brother Luke Maye played ball at UNC He ain’t leaving. He’s off to the NFL after next year
I'm still getting alerts from the UNC thread and it appears he has another brother headed there for b-ball, he's a lifer. It's too bad, he'd be good in Rees' system.
Sounds like Jayden Limar is wavering. He’s been taking visits all year and it’s just now getting out 2 new RB/ATH offers tonight in 2023
Jayden Limar is out here visiting the whole PAC-12 and Love now wants to take more visits including to UGA? lol recruiting is such an annoying thing to follow
and they dropped the only guy that really wanted to come. Nd will end up with the same class it would have with Kelly, right? maybe it’s why Kelly mailed it in, what’s the point if you will just burn yourself out chasing these stupid kids. Just go play golf instead
Ehh there's no belief or evidence out there that Kelly ever really tried in the first place so I doubt he had that come to jesus moment you described, he just liked golf a lot. I guess here is my rationalization both Limar and Bowen have 4 star younger brothers that are major recruits, they need to take visits that's ok. Do I think ND holds both? The offers going out last night don't bode well for Limar, but we've seen no movement at Safety so maybe they feel they can hold Bowen against all our judgement. Bowen's mom seems to be team ND even if Peyton is looking team OU (all this comes from that Drumm clown) so let it play out I guess. Love is bag hunting but I think ND will out bag anyone for him (not gonna bag his parents though), he's a big priority, he claims hes coming back again to ND for Stanford and maybe even Clemson so that seems ok for now
he never tried like freeman for sure, but I think he realized the effort it would take to even just be in the conversation with elite kids in that class that had tuitt and lynch in it. I might be wrong but I think a shift happened there.
I can't understand how someone can be a 50+ year old multi-millionaire and tolerate having to spend this much time kissing a bunch of 17 year olds asses. Especially when you still get paid if you get fired. The day I signed a fuck-you money contract would be the last day I gave a shit about recruiting.
For some of them it's ego. Actually, for a lot of them it's ego. They hold competive jobs in a competitive sport which many of them have played and coached competitively for decades. It's in their blood. Some of them, anyway. Some coaches prefer stroking their own egos on the golf course.
If this class ends up in the 7-10 range it is not fair to scoff at it and say "what's the point, we are in the same spot as Kelly". A lot of ND classes are going to end up there no matter what. When Bama, Georgia, and OSU are guaranteed to be at the top there are only so many spots left. Freeman has put himself out there and given the effort that it takes to get elite talent. Its like being stuck in a comfortable but mediocre career for normal people. Kelly would just accept his fate and hope someday he gets a leg up. Freeman is putting himself out there to make something better. Doing so means that you are going to be told no and get rejected. Kelly would have been afraid to be told no by Dante Moore and settled on a low 4* that would say yes.
Kelly’s apathy on the recruiting trail didn’t come from decommitments. It came from getting these top kids enrolled at ND, them not being a fit, and then frustration from not allowing these types of kids to skate by either academically or via discipline. It was the top kids leaving (or getting suspended) that led to his apathy. Not decommitments during the cycle.
I know, I do actually get that. I'm just not wired that way. It's why I'll never be a billionaire. The only reason.
you are right and i was being hypocritical. IrishLAX2 is right I misremembered that a bit and I was so pissed when that narrative started to leak out of the program. So yeah, keep trying to get these elite kids even if it will undoubtedly lead to incredible angst. Now it will get even worse because they will have to recruit them even when they are on campus.
Singer now saying nd is going to get more aggressive about oversigning. If that and the transfer stuff pans out, could make them much more competitive
