I figured but this is tmb so we talk our shit when the opportunity arises.
I’m not sure that is the type of mobilization Putin et Al were hoping for.

With 1.5M winter outfits :airquote:missing,:airquote: it kinda makes sense that you'd have a sock shortage as well.

Well fuck me, you learn something new everyday. Apparently the Russian army switched to only issuing socks instead of wraps in 2013.

Sure but not very accurate past where we are now. I bet we'll see an amphibious assault (!) once we start talking about Crimea.

So, you gotta wrap your feet in some sort of cloth, then stuff all that into a boot?

Yup, supposedly if you know how to do it right there are some advantages vs socks but I don’t recall what they are off the top of my head. Disadvantage is if you do it wrong your feet are fucked with blisters etc, not great for a soldier imo .

That is insanely cool. It's also nuts that drones are a thing and that they're used in war. when I was younger and playing video games, I never thought they'd actually be a thing. I've been playing Cyberpunk lately and it makes me realize that a lot of the stuff in it could be used in the future.

If there is one thing I’ve learned about history, it isn’t long for any human technological advancement to quickly be studied on how to implement it in war.

Isn’t it usually the reverse? Tech is developed for military application then eventually brought to us civvies?

It can go both directions; the ScanEagle, one of the US's most common tactical UAVs started off as a civilian drone for commercial fishing.

Has worked both ways. Plenty of examples, but one is the percussion cap, which eventually would lead to the ability to breech load a gun and changed military weaponry and strategy. It was invented by a Scottish priest who was tired of the sound and smoke his flint lock gun warning ducks of the incoming shot before the delayed firing. Took a good 15 years before military use of the percussion cap.

Hell, the continuous track was developed to use on machinery with heavy steam engines to keep them from getting stuck in the mud on farms in the early to mid 19th century. Wasn’t until WWI when they were added to military heavy armor that was getting bogged down in the mud.

and what benefit does this provide anyone? I feel like this should have stayed private until after the war. Unless it was strategically leaked to take one of the things, Russia said we meddled in, off the list.
