Really hope he gets everything together. Seems like its closer to being done than the other authors.

Looking for more new authors to read. Read everything by Harlan Coben. Read a lot of Grisham but getting tired of those. Latest books are The Kind Worth Killing and Nine Lives by Peter Swanson. Just finished The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave.

Is there a TMB Goodreads group or something to see highly rated books by this esteemed group?

Classic Grisham to me defined the legal thriller. The Firm, Pelican Brief, and A Time To Kill are all up there on my favorites list. He was also a legit lawyer before figuring out he could write about it better. His newer stuff feels a little preachy at times. Not bad but not as original as his classics.

Coban I can read all of it and I'll preorder everything his writes except his pre-teen series. There is a formula to it by now (someone usually goes missing) but I still enjoy his storytelling and his characters are really well written. The Stranger is probably the best of the Netflix shows. if you were going to start one. The good thing on the shows is they are all limited series so each 'series' is a whole book with an ending.

This is my book club's current read. Winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Fiction. This one is going to stay with me for a while. It's chaotic, funny at times, sad, and powerful. I'd never really considered it, but I never really think about the color of my skin and I don't think I have appreciated just what a privilege that is - not needing to think about it - in and of itself. I believe it is supremely important to try to put ourselves in other's shoes, however briefly and constrained it may be, and this book does a great job of giving that perspective of what it's like being black in America that I am unable to ever fully understand because I can't live it. A lot of it is about the anguish of black parents who have to shatter their innocent children's worldview by having "The Talk" with them. Fuck racism. Great book.

Edit: I should add that the narrator is extremely unreliable (hence my "chaotic" description). You don't really know what is real and what is not. So if that bothers you, avoid this one.

Agree on both. Love everything Coban has done. Grisham’s last few have been stinkers, but I love his legal thrillers.

No on Sooley and I also passed on his other non-legal-thriller books. Like playing for pizza. Just didn’t have interest.

Oath of Loyalty - One of few long running series that continues to delivers. A good empty calories action book. It glorifies everything wrong about American Exceptionalism but if you can turn off that part of your brain and enjoy the ride - theyre fun books.

People Love Dead Jews - Series of essays that talk about how people love to virtue signal about holocaust or antisemitism to advance their own narratives ect. The premise is good, and I agree with most of what she's getting at, but execution was pretty bad, and it leaned into some lack of self awareness preachy-ness. Kind meh overall

The Winners - final book of the Beartown trilogy. Satisfying ending. Backman is a great writer. One of the few that can elicit emotional responses from me while reading.

    69- Outer Dark – Cormac McCarthy (10/10)*
    70- Manhattan Beach – Jennifer Egan (8.5/10)

71- All the Pretty Horses – Cormac McCarthy (10/10)*

An American classic, it won the 1992 National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle award. John Grady Cole might be my most beloved literary character. Just 16 and the last in a long line of Texas ranchers, he and his cousin leave behind what remains of their lives to embark on a journey into Mexico where they are met with a mix of kindness and hostility by those they encounter along the way

    72- On Canaan’s Side – Sebastian Barry (9/10)
Winner of the 2012 Walter Scott Prize for historical fiction, it is a gorgeously written and heartbreaking account of an elderly Irish woman’s life in exile. Forced to leave Dublin due to her family’s political associations, she makes a new life for herself in America yet suffers grave losses along the way. Barry is officially my second favorite author

    73- The Keep – Jennifer Egan (6.5/10)
It is a post-modern take on the Gothic thriller. Two cousins who came out on opposite sides of a childhood prank reunite 20 years later to renovate a medieval castle in Eastern Europe. Egan cleverly uses the various narrative styles that help make her more recent novels so awesome, but here they took me away from parts of the plot just as I was getting invested in them and I never got hooked

    74- Exit West – Mohsin Hamid (8.5/10)
A finalist for the 2017 Booker Prize, it won the LA Times Book Prize for Fiction and the Aspen Words Literary Prize. Hamid tells the story of two young adults in a Middle Eastern country being torn apart by civil war. Upon discovering magic doors throughout their city that can transport people to different countries, they leave everything behind in search of a new life together. It is beautifully written

    75- Annie Dunne – Sebastian Barry (7.5/10)
Set in the 1950s, it is told from the perspective of an older Irish woman who lives and works on her cousin’s small farm. Each depends heavily on the other. The story unfolds over a summer where they are entrusted with the care of their young great-niece and great-nephew. It is a touching book that is heavy on old family notions, but unlike Charming Billy and Last Orders, there is a real sense of suffering and enough dark undertones to demand my close attention. Barry deserves a ton of credit for consistently making strong women focal points of his stories, something authors I love like McCarthy, Banville, Percy, DeLillo, etc. have often neglected (in some cases entirely) to do in their careers

    76- The Stranger – Albert Camus (9/10)*
A 20th-century classic, I think I have read this more than any non-McCarthy novel. As everyone likely knows, it is a short two-part story about a French man living in Algeria who buries his mother and then goes on trial for murdering an Arab man. Seemingly a simple novel, it is packed with philosophical concepts and revolves around the notion that the universe is irrational and attempting to find meaning in life is futile

    77- Flaubert’s Parrot – Julian Barnes (1/10)
A finalist for the 1984 Booker Prize, it is part biography, part literary criticism and part fiction. But it is entirely dry. The story is told by a British doctor on a quest to locate a stuffed parrot that inspired Flaubert’s writing. While creative in its approach, it was way too scholarly. I would recommend to people obsessed with 19th-century British and French literature, but I only enjoyed maybe 15 sentences scattered throughout

Pretty much a straight thriller, not really anything supernatural, which I enjoyed. One long story that keeps shifting viewpoints, no chapters. A "once upon a time" tale about the citizens of Castle Rock and the dirty little things they're up to. Didn't like an animal antagonist as a dog lover but he throws in a small apologia on the last page.

City Inside - Indian Novel speculative sci fi about the surveillance state and capitalism. Very good premise. Being immersed in a foreign culture was cool. But it was kind of boring. Dragged a bit.

Jack Reacher - Pretty good Reacher novel. Better than the last few from what I remembered.

    27. The Matchlock Gun / Walter D. Edmonds (4/10)
    28. Last Of The Mohicans (Great Illustrated Classics Edition) / James Fenimore Cooper (7/10)

A couple of children's books set in the pioneer Northeast. Mostly grotesque in the treatment of natives read through my present day eyes. I would be intrigued to read more about the adventures of Hawkeye and Chingachgook though.

    29. The Tao Of Pooh / Benjamin Hoff (10/10)
    30. The Te Of Piglet / Benjamin Hoff (6/10)

I really like Taoist stuff and the former is a classic. The latter has a couple good ideas but it's held down by the author's old man yells at cloud commentary. He decided to come back 10 years later with some very specific critiques of society and it doesn't fit as well. I will prob buy the OG Winnie the Pooh books at some point after reading these.

Me too, I had the box that came with like 40 of them.

This was a random one that found its way on my shelf somehow. I had never read it and wanted something quick so I picked it up.

I remember the Jules Verne and HG Wells ones being my favs as a kid.

    57. Killers of a Certain Age - Deanna Raybourn (7/10)

Conversations with People Who Hate Me - The author of this use to have a pretty successful YT channel where he'd make left wing socially conscious videos. He started a podcast where he'd invite people who left terrible messages in the comment section, telling him to kill himself ect to have a discussion w him. This book is basically a memoir of his time with the podcast. This book piqued my interest because it seemed like interesting commentary on internet culture. Between the time I put it on my list and started reading it, I started listening to the podcast too. The podcast is pretty good. Very interesting. The book is kind of meh and why I dont really enjoy memoirs. Goes back in forth between being the hero, and forced faux humility that always turns me off. But there is some good stuff in there.

Babel- Im not sure how to describe this. A low fantasy book that mostly takes place in mid 1800s Oxford. A historical fantasy with a light magic system. Babel is a college within the university that trains translators that are used to help colonization. This book was outstanding. Great story, great metaphor and social commentary.

Killers of a Certain Age - Kind of a blind read going into it. It's about a 4 female assassins in their 60s, trying to enjoy their retirement. Then the realize someone is trying to kill them. It's a fun little spy / assassin story. Lots of aging women's humor. This book was well done, but not really for me. My mom would probably like it.

    36. When McKinsey Comes to Town - 7/10. Pretty incredible reporting on the consulting firm. Insane how they have their tentacles in almost every industry and even governments, interesting read following the Gerstle book. Only knock is the weird layout of the book. Rather than going in chronological order, the chapters are based on different industries or companies the firm does work in. Becomes a repetitive book reading about cost cutting over and over again. Also shoe horned in a very weird chapter blasting the Astros over the cheating scandal, the only link to McKinsey being that McKinsey once wrote a report on the Astros use of analytics?

Finally finished the Lord of the Rings today. Went in without ever having watched the movies so it was completely new. Enjoyed them and I’m sure they’re even better with a re-read given the amount of detail.

Thistlefoot - A retelling of Russian Jewish folklore set in modern America. Feels like if Naomi Novak book was set in Gaiman's American Gods. It was really good, different. If you like either of those authors, Im sure you'll like this.

Star Wars - another entry in the High Republic series. It's good nerd stuff :comicbookguy:

Tomorrow x3 - Novel about two childhood friends who start a video game company. Im not even sure how to describe it. If you told me the premise, it probably wouldnt be something Id be interested in reading. I just kind of blindly went into it after seeing it on a lot of best reads list. It's a book that hits you in the feels. Very good. Glad I read it.
