We had a staff member go to an HBC to be a head coach a few years ago. I completely understand why the lifers there didn’t like Deion, it’s much more of a chance to affect kids lives at a human level than at an FBS program. As a white dude who’s seen it the black community that follows the HBC rivalries doesn’t get enough news coverage.
Facility upgrades are the biggest thing to hopefully let them succeed long term, a good coach can do a lot but facility wise that’s only happening thanks to Deion personally.
He got them success through recruiting and notoriety. Will they have either of those without him? at least they got a good few years.
why? Honest question. In the CU thread there is a tweet that makes it seem like going from HBCU to power five is a good thing.
I disagree. The HBCU programs will continue to get games on TV however the athletes will not continue to go there like they were because Deion was involved
Im not blaming or knocking Deion, and he left Jackson state in a better spot than it was, but it objectively sucks for the school and HBCUs that he left
They won’t. The idea of black recruits (particularly in the south) eschewing the usual programs to go to an HBCU didn’t originate with Deion but it hadn’t really happened until now. HBCU football unfortunately gets overlooked too much.
We can all admit we’re part of the same hypocrisy but those schools have indisputable legacies that deserve recognition. If the NFL truly gave a shit those schools would get funds that meant something not one of their horseshit useless programs.
I mean there's no way that they thought he was gonna be a lifer at Jackson State and if they did then that's on them, not Deion.
This is the conversation with multiple HBCU grads from the past week. #1 they feel betrayed. They figured it out in the last couple months after Deion really started wavering from his original goal of not caring about the money and just wanting to bring the attention to the HBCU programs and take over the college football world. He is about to take every good player from Jackson State and bring them back to irrelevant. We've seen big name coaches try and replicate what Deion has done with the HBCU. Hue Jackson 3-7 this year, Eddie George 9-12 in 2 years. NOBODY can replicate Deion. But Deion was starting to get the major spotlight and fixing the HBCU football world. HBCU football has been almost the black good ole boy club. You saw the way Eddie Robinson Jr got angry with Deion. They loved what Deion was doing and changing in the HBCU world. Now all his work is probably going to be gone in 2 years. The one conversation tonight was with an Athletic Director of a HBCU program that is currently looking for a head coach. They had 4 names on their list and 2 MASSIVE names for black head coaches. Deion had opened the door for this happened. The AD said to us tonight "well there goes those names". KS & WT are the initials.
This is the biggest problem from what I have heard with HBCU. Money has come in and been misused for so long. With the spotlight from Deion, these HBCU had to buckle up and get their shit together. Now its gone and its going to be back to a shitstorm
#Colorado Buffaloes tagging in case it gets lost in the ramblings. I saw that Shedeur is coming with Deion. Siap, but any word on Travis Hunter coming too?
Snowboarding season starts like late November. If Colorado is good, the students will care. Just like anywhere else.
I'm generally uncomfortable wading into this kind of stuff about HBCU programs for obvious reasons as a white dude. That said, it feels like an unreasonable expectation to put on a coach that he's just not supposed to ever leave for another job if it's offered because him staying helps everyone else in that CFB ecosystem. I understand them being disappointed, but beyond that feels a little much from the outside.
I get it. It takes a bit to try to step in. So, I guess go ahead and be shitty. I tried to be shitty to make peace, wasn't good at it. Keep being shitty
You can say that but the speeches Deion was giving when he took the job made everyone think he was going to be there for 10+ years. But as I said, everyone figured out in the last 2 months, he was leaving. I personally am shocked he took Colorado. Thought the USF job would have been the one to take. Would have killed High School Florida recruiting and theyre building a new stadium on campus.
I think its more the feeling of being used and knowing thats what was going to happen even though Deion always denied it. They knew Deion and knew he was only out for himself.
maybe because I didn’t attend a HBCU and don’t understand the importance but coaches leave for better situations all the time. There are very few true destination jobs in sports.
But the other thing, I cant remember the stat they said and I cant find it, but I think this is maybe only the 1st or 2nd time in HBCU football a coach has left for D1 job. Most HBCU coaches are lifers or get fired.
If the HBCUs can become feeder programs for black coaches to jump to FBS schools that’s about the best they could ever hope to be. They need more Deions - not fewer.
Didn't he try and get jobs last season too? I was under impression he was openly trying to bolt asap.
In the CU thread there is tweet that says this is first power five and second FBS. It made it seem like a bad thing the number was so low but you seem to be saying the number is so low because the coaches don’t want it.
Well like everything there isn't a simple answer. The pressures that come from an FBS school in a power conference obviously dwarf those at an HBCU. Among other things I presume HBCU head coaches are good enough to be assistants at major college programs but those programs are unlikely to ever give them a shot at being the head coach. Think I posted something similar but I think we all should appreciate the ability to develop kids who go to HBCUs and aren't exactly 5 star recruits vs those highly rated recruits who because of their physical traits have never dealt with adversity on the football field.
CU had a little juice just a couple of years ago when they hired mel tucker. it sucks that he left (and he might not be that great of a coach anyways) but this isn't a complete zero of a program. the downside of hiring someone who could flame out in a year is that you're further delaying the chance to hire someone who can bring the program back to respectability. i'll fully admit to being wrong about deion if he ends up staying at CU for a few years but i don't see that happening at all (never mind whether he's even a good coach or not).
The last time CU football had a buzz like this was 2004. The last time it was for anything good was 2001. With that being said, there is no way this ends well, but it should at least be exciting for a while.
I don’t see the downside. Deion already forced the administration to make changes no other candidate or coach could. We announced a pilot program for changes to our transfer requirements. We’ve upped our financial commitment in terms of coaches salaries and NIL. He’ll recruit nationally, a key issue with any other coach (including Mel) given the lack of local HS talent. It’s really the perfect solution to what’s ailed us as a program. He can stay for 2 years and we’ll be significantly better off based on the changes he’s requiring of us. We also just need someone to show that this job is still a good one, even if it’s viewed as a stepping stone. We had 50k in the stands to watch a winless team beat Cal. The support is there.
